Bob Morales posted:They incrementally made the Air better. The first one sucked (2008). Fixed it in 2010. I'm willing to give them a pass on the MacBook. That's just pure portability and everything else be damned. And those incremental upgrades made the Air their best laptop until Retinas came around. I wasn't paying much attention to Apple notebooks back then, but I remember everyone bitching about this failure of a laptop and then two years later it's the best ultrabook available. I'm more referring to everything in the last 5 years or so with most incremental upgrades or new features no one wants. I've got to buy a college-bound kid a laptop next year and I really want an updated MacBook Air and I'm really starting to think that's not going to happen.

Damnit I literally just bought a 15" mbp after WWDC, really wish there had been some warning about this. Oh well, it's still newer and much better than the 6 year old computer it replaced.

You should be able to get the 13" non-touchbar Pro for $1049 or so at Best Buy on sale. It really is the 'heir apparent'. Hah. Hah. Hah. It's not as nice of a deal as the $799 13" Air was, and the touchbar-equipped 13" Pro starts at a whopping $1799.

They of course made no comments on the reliability of the new keyboard, and the repair program doesn’t apply to the new MacBooks, so I really hope the actually fixed it. Otherwise the backlash later in the year is gonna be fierce.

What's a Radeon Pro 560X roughly equivalent to in desktop NVIDIA cards? I'm trying to get a feel for the video performance. I heard some saying it was about a 1050, is this accurate?

The MBP has a Retina display and runs OS X so it's hard to compare with Windows PC's

Countdown to inevitable iFixit take apart where the fixability score remains the same as the 2017s, also countdown to BareFeats issuing semi-useful benchmarks; if they actually include the 2015 models in the benchmarks that might additionally prod me.. Apple continues to use year only nomenclature, it's just called the 2018 instead of 'Late 2013' or 'Early 2015' indicating they'll never release more than one laptop model a year going forward. Apple also offers the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock HD as a preferred docking choice in the Apple Store. Amazon reviews pretty much state it's lovely, has sleep and HDMI issues, offers fewer ports.. sigh. Its only saving grace is that it offers 85W of USB-C charging power, enough to charge a 15-inch. I'd get the CalDigit TS3 Plus over their choice, but whatevs.. Wonder what battery life will be like when the hexacore i9 is stressed out? Be interesting to see benchmarks from stuff like R and other statistical apps.. Other than the quad core goodness and HEVC hardware compatibility, there's not much to tear me away from my Early 2015 rMBP jury rigged with 1 TB Samsung 970 Pro.. Well, now what. I'd really hoped that this would be the year I get to upgrade this mid-2012 non-retina 15" MBP. Of all the things I disliked about the new MBPs, I'd decided to buy one if they'd just release a 15" without the touchbar, since it seemed to me like that would be the most likely thing for them to do. $2500 laptops should not come with a laundry list of things I dislike.

I wonder if th new touchbar will be bigger and less useful. Lol iOS doesn’t even let me type touchbar without autocorrect. Looks like someone at Apple didn’t add it to their newspeak dictionary.

The 13-inch non-TouchBar has a discrete SSD with a proprietary connector, the TouchBars have the SSD integrated as part of the logic board. This minute difference does matter a bit if the SSD fails, with the NTB you just pull out the bad SSD and replace it. With the integrated SSD on TB models, you have to toss the whole logic board if it fails; also you have to use this weird jury-rigged board to hook up the logic board to in order to try to recover data.

Don’t be a jerk. I mean the chipset for the laptops wasn’t available till the beginning of this summer, and a few of the windows laptops that used them basically melted down. They alerted it out, but Apple waits until they’ve tested a ton of chips before they put them in their laptops. As for the keyboards, yeah, it’s a problem. I won’t buy a new laptop till they’ve sorted it out. That’s why hopefully them are working to fix it. It also doesn’t cost you anything now, new replacement program.

Something to consider, first published opinion of the third gen keyboards. https://techcrunch.com/2018/07/12/the-new-macbook-pro-keyboards-are-quieter-but-otherwise-unchanged/ 'Quieter' doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence but as long as they can withstand a dust mote without exploding into flames, who cares..
