I can't think of any 'gently caress you, you're stuck with it' design choices other than the single USB-C port on the MacBook. All the previous designs were great, at least the unibody going forward.

I'm willing to give them a pass on the MacBook. That's just pure portability and everything else be damned. And those incremental upgrades made the Air their best laptop until Retinas came around. I wasn't paying much attention to Apple notebooks back then, but I remember everyone bitching about this failure of a laptop and then two years later it's the best ultrabook available.

I'm more referring to everything in the last 5 years or so with most incremental upgrades or new features no one wants. I've got to buy a college-bound kid a laptop next year and I really want an updated MacBook Air and I'm really starting to think that's not going to happen.

13-inch non-Touchbar didn't get upgraded

13-inch got the quad i5 and upgradeable to i7

4TB SSD available on the 15"

i9 available on the 15"

AMD graphics appears to be the same, the model changed from the 555X and 560X (what the X means I don't know)

Touchbar is still there

'quieter' 3rd gen keyboard

Wide color and trutone display

Battery life is still at "10 hours wireless web" despite the LPDDR3 going away

i9/32GB/4TB model is $6,699.00

You should be able to get the 13" non-touchbar Pro for $1049 or so at Best Buy on sale. It really is the 'heir apparent'. Hah. Hah. Hah.

It's not as nice of a deal as the $799 13" Air was, and the touchbar-equipped 13" Pro starts at a whopping $1799.

They of course made no comments on the reliability of the new keyboard, and the repair program doesn’t apply to the new MacBooks, so I really hope the actually fixed it. Otherwise the backlash later in the year is gonna be fierce.

Tough to say. Nobody does good performance reviews on Macbooks since Anandtech quit doing them. The MBP has a Retina display and runs OS X so it's hard to compare with Windows PC's

Mmmmm, nah, it's still LPDDR3 RAM on the 13-inch and 'good' and 'better' tiers on the 15-inch.

You only get LPDDR4 (and 32 GB total RAM) on the 'best' 15-inch tier, the 2.7GHz i7 / 2.9 GHz choices.

Countdown to inevitable iFixit take apart where the fixability score remains the same as the 2017s, also countdown to BareFeats issuing semi-useful benchmarks; if they actually include the 2015 models in the benchmarks that might additionally prod me..

Apple continues to use year only nomenclature, it's just called the 2018 instead of 'Late 2013' or 'Early 2015' indicating they'll never release more than one laptop model a year going forward.

Apple also offers the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock HD as a preferred docking choice in the Apple Store. Amazon reviews pretty much state it's lovely, has sleep and HDMI issues, offers fewer ports.. sigh. Its only saving grace is that it offers 85W of USB-C charging power, enough to charge a 15-inch.

I'd get the CalDigit TS3 Plus over their choice, but whatevs..

Wonder what battery life will be like when the hexacore i9 is stressed out? Be interesting to see benchmarks from stuff like R and other statistical apps..

Other than the quad core goodness and HEVC hardware compatibility, there's not much to tear me away from my Early 2015 rMBP jury rigged with 1 TB Samsung 970 Pro..

As Bob said there won't be any good reviews, but it's probably lower than a 1050. Especially given that historically Apple's dedicated GPU thermal performance is very poor, so you get significant throttling.

Okay, I stand corrected. Apple must be in the middle of touching up their store pages, or my provider sucks, because up until just now I didn't see the choice for 16/32 GB RAM on the 'good' and 'better' models.

Sheesh, it's $ 3,000 just for the 4 TB choice. Who the hell needs to carry that much tentacle porn with them..

Well, now what.

I'd really hoped that this would be the year I get to upgrade this mid-2012 non-retina 15" MBP. Of all the things I disliked about the new MBPs, I'd decided to buy one if they'd just release a 15" without the touchbar, since it seemed to me like that would be the most likely thing for them to do.

$2500 laptops should not come with a laundry list of things I dislike. :sigh:

Apple are big fans of having an outlier model that doesn't match the rest of the series, probably so they can do a "starting at $999" or whatever pricepoint thing.

The 13-inch non-TouchBar has a discrete SSD with a proprietary connector, the TouchBars have the SSD integrated as part of the logic board.

This minute difference does matter a bit if the SSD fails, with the NTB you just pull out the bad SSD and replace it. With the integrated SSD on TB models, you have to toss the whole logic board if it fails; also you have to use this weird jury-rigged board to hook up the logic board to in order to try to recover data.

They announced this eGPU as well:

quote:

Thursday July 12, 2018 6:29 AM PDT by Mitchel Broussard
Apple.com today gained a new and exclusive external GPU aimed at the MacBook Pro, called the Blackmagic eGPU. According to TechCrunch, the unit's appearance exclusively on Apple's website comes in the wake of a partnership between the two companies as Apple aims to widen the eGPU market after launching support for eGPUs this past spring.

Running for $699.00, the Blackmagic eGPU provides desktop-class graphics performance on a MacBook Pro, through a Radeon Pro 580 graphics processor with 8GB of GDDR5 memory. The accessory connects via Thunderbolt 3, includes two Thunderbolt 3 ports, four USB 3.0 ports, one HDMI 2.0 port, and 85W power delivery. A Thunderbolt 3 cable also comes in the box.

Don’t be a jerk. I mean the chipset for the laptops wasn’t available till the beginning of this summer, and a few of the windows laptops that used them basically melted down. They alerted it out, but Apple waits until they’ve tested a ton of chips before they put them in their laptops.

As for the keyboards, yeah, it’s a problem. I won’t buy a new laptop till they’ve sorted it out. That’s why hopefully them are working to fix it. It also doesn’t cost you anything now, new replacement program.
