I think Seiken Denetsu 3's characters had little to no overlap of their stories too? Though a lot of their stories went to the same places just with different boss fights IIRC.
You had varying banter, based on who was in your party.

If a character had a beef with a villain the party was fighting, they might show up even if they weren't in it.

SD3 had six characters from six nations; three of which were aggressive nations manipulated by the baddies, and three which would be the victims of a corresponding aggressive nation. Most of the dungeons you'd go to were still the same, since the crystals factored into everyone's goals, but you'd have a special dungeon and end boss focused on the aggressive nation most related to the first character picked.

There was also the vicious battle royal where one of the aggressive nations would vanquish the other two while the heroes were doing their quest.

God, I love that game.

The Octopath demo charmed me pretty hard. While I initially was hoping it would fill the SD3-sized hole in my heart, it will probably fill its own place.

You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.

I coulda sworn I saw it in this thread, but maybe I'm crazy. Wasn't there a chart showing the stat bonuses you get from each subclass? Apothecary gets extra HP, Thief gets extra Crit, all in one handy graph. I don't know where the hell I saw it if not here.

Octo could also mean octopus so maybe this game is actually the prequel story to Splatoon?

The thing that bothers me about the structure is not necessarily that it's eight independent stories - I wouldn't mind a collection of smaller tales, especially for something like Switch where I tend to play in chunks rather than marathon sessions. From the reviews, however, it just seems like they didn't execute the game in a manner benefitting the format. The lack of non-party characters gaining experience, the level gating so you're pushed to rotate through the stories, and what seems like fairly similar structure for each chapter and each character's story just don't befit the eight independent story structure.

The combat and overall atmosphere is fantastic, so I'm going to picking this up, but I know that a couple things are gonna be nagging me as "coulda-beens" while playing through the game.

Yeah, but no art is ever perfect. And as much as we shouldn't over-hype the game before release, we also shouldn't obsess over something else that could have been as long as this is at least pretty dang cool and good, and that seems extremely likely.

Storywise, Octopath Traveler sounds kind of like the weird experimental poo poo Square did in the playstation era and I'm here for it.

I heard there was an Octopath discord, where is that? EDIT: Never mind, finally found it here. http://discord.gg/GKVPaKf

You get nothing but end of the world stories in most fiction, and people roll their eyes at it. They give us a secret noble who's lived her life as a prostitute on a quest to get revenge against her abuser, and everyone says "where's the end of the world story?"

no pleasing some people.

I don't care if there's an end of the world story or not, I just want party members to acknowledge each others' existence. It seems kinda weird to me if you're playing through a storyline and you're traveling with seven other characters but they don't respond to or interact with what's happening in that story.

Still gonna be playing it tonight to see for myself though.

Huh, Ophelia’s first boss hosed me up after no resistance until that point (3rd character to grab). Guess I’ll get the ranger girl first and then go loop back for her? Or will the boss continue scaling with my party and I should just kill him now?

Everything I've read in this thread and elsewhere seems to indicate that the bosses scale with how many people are in your party.

He's much easier to beat if you use her Guide action to grab the soldier in front of the cave that has Prayer (A strong 300 point heal!)
