We now return you to your BWM discussion and I express amazement that Nationals season tickets were so loving expensive. Christ, attendance at that ballpark has been so lovely that a few years ago, the Nationals had to open ticket sales to Phillies/Nationals games to Maryland, D.C., and Virginia a month before they would allow sales to credit cards with Philly zip codes, because the Phillies fans greatly outnumbered the Nationals fans at their home ballpark.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blog...m=.7b378bc03187

The BWM there is that just means there were a whole lot more tickets on stubhub.

https://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/07/sports/baseball/nationals-fail-to-halt-invasion-of-phillies-fans.html

Prior to 2012 (when these articles were published) the Nationals had a franchise record of 492 - 640 (really bad). Since then they've gone 601 - 463 (really good) and Kavanaugh bought all these tickets in 2016. Prices go up a lot when the team is good. Still idiotic to zero out your net worth on baseball tickets though.

As for stories from reddit: I Got a Dream Job in CS Research making 70k for Family of 3 Immediately After Graduation... I'm Living Paycheck to Paycheck and I Think I Have to Get a Higher Paying Job.

quote:

My wife makes a small amount of money from disability although its not very dependable or predictable, I can't remember how much but it pays for her fancy gym membership (300 bucks) and high quality water (148.85) we get delivered (which she feels is necessary for her well-being and the babies). I can't dispute these charges, she goes to the gym every morning at 8am, and they even watch the baby for an hour and a half (everyday). That's well worth the price for her, and probably downright necessary for her sanity.

Now I know that I can easily make more than 70k in private industry (two degrees B.S. Mathematics and B.S. Computer Science (and even had higher offers, albeit in more expensive areas than Atlanta), I was interviewing on site at placing like Google and Facebook before, and for whatever reason working at this non-profit research company associated with a major university seemed like the right calling for me. However, I just don't think I bargained for enough money or realized how tight things would be... I think that to save my sanity I might have to find something that pays better because after paying off all the stuff I'm left with nothing.

Also from reddit: TLDR: Luck turned upside down, went from 50k* in savings to being 5k+ in debt and now need to move back with parents. Feeling unmotivated and want to give up.

*Actually only had 10k in savings.

quote:

My time there I was able to save a good 20k or so, sold my $500 car and bought one worth $25k which is now half paid off. Felt like I finally had things together and it was now time for me to move off on my own, so I did. When I said I had 20k saved, about 10k was profits from crypto, the other 10k was left in savings.
...
Well, a little later the crypto market crashes, and I knew better than to hold as this definitely proved to be a bubble afterall, and sold.
...
I never partied much and kept to myself, so I decided that I needed to get out more and I did. Got drunk, went to the casino, played some poker, drove home on the back roads drunk and got pulled over for a DUI.
...
I start my new job, things are going well and it turns out they hired "too many" engineers. Myself and 3 others who had the least experience were let go 1 month into the job. Couple weeks later, my car gets broken into while I'm at some park. 1k in damages.

Amenities like child care, spa, etc really jack it up

Personal training is like 75 to 150 bucks an hour

Crossfit nonsense gyms are like 250 a month even with zero amenities because they're paying high rent and huge $$$ on speciality equipment and gotta recoup that somehow

I'd share a juicy BWM story of a $620 gym payment if this thread didn't have a "no stories starting with I/My" rule

The rest of the guys budget is really high too. They are spending 800/mo on groceries and 1450/mo on rent. I checked zillow for the Atlanta area and they could definitely have a decent place with room for 2 adults and a baby for much less than that. Seriously, rent for 3+ bedroom 2000+ sqft homes is less than that there.

But holy poo poo, the YMCA will watch your kids too. And it's a good place when you're short on your dough and there are many ways to have a good time.

These two things seem to work well, and wouldn't be impossible to put in other places. If California wanted to fix their housing, then you could fund a major income tax cut by doing a large prop tax hike accompanied by repeal of Prop 13, and getting rid of zoning entirely is just a legal problem.

You'd immediately see tons of people selling and un-stick the property market.

A giant kid watching area with a huge playscape thing that is supervised to leave your kids while working out, two basketball gyms, a huge exercise area with a bunch of cardio and weight machines, a big free weight gym, and a bunch of yoga, Pilates, Zumba, etc classes. Suburban YMCA's are great. They manage to afford pretty good facilities by catering to the exact kind of housewife who uses the gym as a babysitter and drinks $150 in special water every month.

I imagine urban ones have a more challenging time. Do old single guys still literally live at the YMCA in big cities?

My hometown YMCA is great in a town of 100,000 people. Plenty of space there and people I guess see themselves as a community. The mediocre gyms in LA are really, really mediocre. And combine that with the desire for the semi-rich to be both away from poors and people who actually want to lift and voila, you get Equinox.

This is one of the tiniest instances of BWM I've seen, but it blew my mind.

One of my coworkers was sharing their love of Costco. Her one complaint was that they didn't have any reasonable cereal sizes, so she had to shop at the normal grocery store and make an extra trip just for cereal. She hardly ever buys cereal, but her kid loves Cheerios and she can't get them from Costco.

Why?

Because apparently all cereal boxes are single-serve to her. She thinks that there is no way that the cereal stays fresh in its original bag and won't eat it or feed it to her kid if the sealed package hasn't just been opened.

She used to have some kind of food preserver (???) for cereal, but it broke and they haven't replaced it. So, cereal boxes are all single serve and then done for them.
