The question I always ask was "Did they get the money from their own labor, or from exploiting others?" for most actors it's the former so IDGAF how much they have.

pretty much yea, this is the actual 'line' we should use to decide hypocrisy and all. Nixon is rich as gently caress but unless I missed some sweatshop poo poo hitting her or whatever she wasn't exactly stealing the labor of others for profit. No one's being exploited by the chapo boys having an entirely donation based thing.

Also Will is probably the most bougie dude on the team and he's 100% open about being a fancy lad and Felix jokes about how he's a big gamer dork from boring rear end middle class hell and all.

I always support entertainers (including athletes) over management but let's be real, the behind-the-scenes workers are getting hosed in this arrangement, and there's a general problem in arts and athletics where everything is built around one or two stars with pay distributed accordingly.

The discussion of whether her labor is overvalued is a legit one, but that's a completely separate thing from the fact that she did not exploit others for it.

Casual listener here. Sincere question, have they ever addressed the fact that everyone knows they're making more in a month from their patreon than most people make in a year? But they're hardline socialists? Do they donate patreon money to NYC public schools or something?

I'm legitimately finding it harder and harder to listen to these guys and ignore the fact that they're loving rich. Amber seems to be the only one with an ounce of credibility anymore since she actually works as a community organizer fulltime.

Nick on cum town has offhandedly mentioned that they donate a bunch of it a couple times, they just dont tell anyone about it I think.

They're giving away half of their product for free. If it were not for that fact I guess one could make an argument that they could stand to lower their price so it would be available to more people, but then again, it's a stupid loving show about The Noid so who really gives a poo poo if people have full access to it or not compared to the stuff poor people do go without?

Even an anarchist like Mark Bray takes payment for his books. As individuals living in a capitalist society we're extremely vulnerable, so I don't blame someone for getting while the getting is good. I don't feel like you have to live a life of asceticism to have credibility when calling for systemic change. I also feel like there's a larger argument to be made that redistribution of wealth should be handled by the state, or at the very least not be relied upon to be a voluntary effort; otherwise the people with the kind of wealth that would make a systemic difference will never do so. If they are donating and stuff, then that is great, but I feel like they have the credibility needed to make a dumb internet show.

not only do they not charge for half their product, they said once or twice that they are cool with people pirating it. even though it sounds like a caked in irony thing to say, I think they really mean it, which is something I can respect

Being rich alienates from the struggles of the working class and limits one's capacity for solidarity. Amber seems like the only one who is trying to compensate for that with her own actions. This is in no way an indictment for any Chapo because that's just how this poo poo works and they are all just as subject to the american capitalist mindset as anyone. Plus NYC is expensive as gently caress.

But they're not trying to do anything too radical and different.

If Real-rear end Revolution actually came to the US, I don't think the dry boys would be able avoid the reeducation camps. They'd be lucky to avoid going up against the wall, tbf.

yo dude, some people can take a lot more of an active hand in that exploitation than others, dont go and pretend that the ruling class is a victim of circumstance the same way the working class is

anyways this is ignoring the point that even if chapo somehow found an anomalous wellspring of capital, they are actively undermining capitalism by being a pole of attraction towards anticapitalist politics

not that chapo are going to be what builds the revolution or anything, but we should be glad when anyone with a public audience is willing to speak against capitalism and for socialism, even a dipshit podcast

Steal the book

SMERSH Mouth
Jun 25, 2005

I believe the best outcome for Chapo will be for them to continue to publish books. Their fans will need to start buying multiple copies of each new book. They will develop a fictional multiverse with its own set of rich-but-socialist heroes who outwit aliens/pirates/crooked capitalists in between monologues about voluntary celebacy and revolutionary gaming. Then when patreon cuts them off they can leverage their publishing wealth to open first a national then a global series of 'chapo institutes' that use the principles of bineural beats, kratom, and mma training to raise up a new class of socialists. Socialists who would be willing to give all their exploitation-derived income to the institutions. And live on a boat.

There are a million reasons to ruin things.
their patreon indicates $1.2 million a year, which, assuming they're splitting it equally 6 ways, is around $193k a year per person after Patreon's 5% cut and before taxes, etc., i.e., doing pretty well even by NYC standards, but not exactly in pro athlete or hedge fund manager territory.

excessive wealth accumulation is of course disgusting but the left does itself no favors with its poorer-than-thou reverse dick measuring contests as a measure of individual piety
