The other side of this is that Taiwanese people incessantly complain about how hot it is even if they were born here, grew up here, and have never left the country. It’s hot more than half the year! How much of your life has been dedicated to noticing that fact?!

That’s probably because most of the people you meet are 1) dumb enough to voluntarily spend time in the mainland, 2) weirdos on dating sites, or some combination of the two.

The thing that does scare me is that as of (I think) a few years ago Taiwanese driver's licenses don't expire. My girlfriend has one despite literally only having driven a car for the test and then never again.

All of Europe is like that as well, my driver's license expires on my 100th birthday.

I guess so. It's just when I'm here in America with a bottle that I wish I could reuse it.

A funny drinking story I have is when I was downing baiju with my wife's family in china. I am a semi-alcoholic after my term in the US Army, so I can at least sort of keep up with everyone. This prompted the following:

"I didn't know white people could handle alcohol..." - Father In Law

-Uncles/Aunts and grandparents nod and agree that this is suprising-

"They can't, but they're 1/4th Japanese so they have asian blood" - Mother In law

-Uncles/Aunts and grandparents nod and agree that this makes sense-

"Ah, that must explain it" - Father in Law

It shattered my worldview. I assumed everyone viewed white people as drunkards. To be fair chinese people do drink a shitload so the non korean/japanese foreigner probably does seem like a lightweight.

Yeah, always depends on the state. I had to retake the test just to switch licenses from California->Oregon, but I think if I moved back to CA I would just be able to tell them my old license number and get a new one--maybe provided I showed a valid license from a different state.

It depends on the issuing state. Things you might be asked to do when renewing your license in the USA:

- take an eye exam
- complete a written test
- complete a behind the wheel test
- complete a basic road safety exam (a pictorial test showing you know what a stop sign is, what a RxR sign means, etc)
- update vital information (such as height, weight)
- update residency information
- get your picture taken

The last three are practically guaranteed but all of the other ones are dependent upon the state issuing the license. I renewed my license last time with nothing but a cursory eye exam, but my friend in Pennsylvania had to take a 20 question written exam that would have triggered a retake of driver’s ed if he’d failed it.

But failure would’ve meant you missed 10 questions and they are not complicated at all. poo poo like “the light turns yellow and you’re a bit away, what do?”

So whereabouts are they from? They probably wouldn’t be from north east China because they would be heavy drinkers.

Not even country town Hunan are like that because everyone is dumb enough to drink and constantly drive! The police are friends with the villagers so there’s not complaints there when there’s a DUI!

I’m guessing guangxi but I’m probably wrong because the case is so just so absurd
