Being part of a family or community is a good thing to have as party of your identity.

Some people have extremely toxic families or no families at all. ICP explicitly and successfully set out to create a community that people with nowhere else to turn could feel like they were part of. It's not about the band or merchandise, it's about the community and acceptance and belonging.

You are perhaps too lucky or privileged to really understand the need they filled for a lot of people.

Of course, some assholes that don't get it and some straight up psychopaths glom on too, but that's true of basically every community.

There are better ways to escape poverty or abusive parents then diving into an insane community of clowns, literal or metaphorical. Those communities prey on the weak, not unlike religious cults, under the guise of acceptance and providing help. And, again, like cults, they often do provide that. I know people who overcame their drug and alcohol addiction thanks to simple cult followers, who helped them out of kindness of their hearts, but later were also instrumental in exploiting the poo poo out of them. The only real difference is that with subcultures there's rarely one charismatic authoritative leader, but even then with how subcultures work, it just means that your local subculture cells will in many cases be their own little cults.

And no, believe me, I'm not 'lucky' or 'privileged'.

I think Paladinus's last post shows that they're approaching the question of the value of subcultures from a perspective that is painful, or at least upsetting. If I knew multiple people who had been exploited by cults, I would also be extremely skeptical of anything that reminded me of a cult.

An important distinction between a cult or an oppressive culture, and a culture or group that is healthy and positive, is that people are free to end their association with the healthy group whenever they feel like it. I don't know much about juggalos, but I haven't heard that there's anything about them culturally that enforces people staying with the group against their wills. That is also definitely true of SA, where people quietly disappear all the time. (Insert dead gay forum joke here.)

Exploration is ill-advised.
Capitalism has annihilated, gentrified or commodified pretty much all other traditional forms of kinship, subcultures are pretty much all that's left for young people to find communities. They aren't going to disappear just because you find them silly.

I suspect that subcultures have survived mostly because membership of subcultures tends to revolve around various depressingly consumerist behaviours. I think juggalos are actually somewhat rare in that seem to have an explicit and positive set of values that they adhere to

All of the juggalos I've met have been not normal people that had lovely childhoods or were otherwise outcasts. Otherwise they've been pretty harmless but angry at the world. Whenever you read about them it's pretty common for them to say that they'll accept anybody with nowhere else to go and treat them as family. Seems pretty harmless to me as far as weird subcultures go.
