I don't mind Mako. I was just kinda using her as a visual cue, I suppose? K-on! has that thing where I cared about them Tea-Timers + their friends. I tried to read the College Years K-On but I quickly realized "Yeah no, I'm done". Unless there's Sawa-chan sensei, then SIGN ME THE gently caress UP

I've done a writeup before about how it has kernels of good ideas and themes to explore, but it fails in the execution of most of these save for the clothes motif. Not to mention the characters are mostly one-note tropes that don't really undergo and sort of character arcs save perhaps Ryuko, and only begrudgingly as the story repeats the same note with her over. And over. And over again. And to crossover to the topic of "fanservice" that came up in the seasonal thread-a lot of the sexuality on display is intended to titilate the audience with no function in service of the actual themes of sexuality and expression of the true self that the show wants to tell. This is especially egregious when it's used for the sake of drama, such as the infamous "butt-slap" scene, but there's plenty of times where scenes are framed just to titilate the audience (Ryuko getting spanked by Gammagori with her butt taking up most of the screen comes to mind).

KLK mostly succeeds for me on an aesthetic level. The amazing visual style & music lend it a kind of manic energy that make me willing to overlook a lot of flaws, and I love all the characters, even if they're not always well-used. I can't think of another anime that gets my blood pumping in quite the same way (insert erection joke /  here)That said, you're not wrong, Julias. I can't really argue with any point you've made here, except to say "well, it works for me!" But it does, it works for me.

If you haven't seen it, I'd highly reccomend Gurren Lagann for a similar hot-bloodedness/great ost-it even has a bunch of the same staff as KLK
