If only there was some way to use a computer to get a ballpark for what might be the going rate for a photographer hire.

Or community colleges that offer classes on how to run a business.

:v:"So, about how much do you charge for a day-long product shot?"

:v:"OK, but how much is that?"
:)"It depends. Sometimes it's more, because, you know, I have to hire an assistant, or they have a really tight deadline"
:v:"OK, but how much? Like, dollars?"
:)"It can seem like a lot, at first, yeah"
:v:"$10? $100? $1000... stop me when I get close"
:)"$10? What? No. More than that."

Another flaw with this whole situation is that so many people (thanks iPhone IG influencers :fuckthis: ) expect photography to be free, or nearly free / for exposure, so even throwing out what they think is too high will immediately "lose" them as a client. But this is opening up a whole other can of worms.

I had this issue and it kept me from pursuing the business. I am primarily a musician so adding freelance photography was not a stretch in terms of the business side of things but even though musicians deal with playing for free, for exposure etc. I wasn’t prepared for how much people devalue photography. Actual paying gigs did come up but I got tired of dealing with so many people being surprised or insulted by realistic price quotes. It probably doesn’t help that portraiture was what I was most into and the area is flooded with moms who got expensive cameras and therefore were now “professionals”, taking technically flawed poo poo photos but parents eating up anything with their kids face in the blown out crooked frames and paying 30 bucks for the hour sessions.

If it wasn’t a side gig I would have kept going but I have to deal with the soul crushing experiences of musicians being devalued as it is so adding the same but x10 for photographers just wasn’t doing it for me.

I've been quite fortunate in that everyone I've ever dealt with expected to be charged up front. I've even had people give me tips unasked for.

That sucks! It's why I never really put all my efforts into being a fulltime photographer, that and I still think I suck but issues aside... lots of creative industries have been hit by this professionally. As a video editor who's worked in a variety of different places, I've seen it happen to most of the creatives I've worked for. Over the past 10 years everything has dropped in value but requirements for skills and the number of things done for that lesser value have increased 10 fold. You can't just be one thing, you've gotta be all the things, and exceptional at each or you're not looked at seriously.

Anyhow, back in 2008 or 9 the place I was working tried to launch a series where the concept was to produce a music video for under $100, which included EVERYTHING... except, you guessed it... the talent. None of the actual people doing things got paid, the cheap joke of a budget (yeah it was a concept that failed) was for props, rentals, and stuff like that. Everybody worked for free, or a slice of pizza and a bottle of water. Except the fulltime producers working on it. I guess some bands got a free video out of it, so there was some "exposure" going on at least.

Oh well, this is straying a bit far so I'll cut myself off.

Now how about that Alan Bromley guy? Almost feel bad making jokes because he's in his 50s or 60s? I guess he doesn't get the internet aspect of it, but little does he know he's devaluing the whole industry, like those moms with the latest Canikon and nifty fifty with a "pro" facebook photography page.

Not knowing sweet fuckall about the business aspect of photography, I’m curious to hear if the animosity towards dirt-cheap session photographers is extended to amateurs that sell a few prints of their own stuff on the side. The two markets are pretty different, so maybe not?

100% of my photography money is made from prints, although perhaps not in the same sense as a portrait guy selling prints of families. Every show I do I have competition undercutting my prices by half, usually even more. I don't really have animosity towards them, but holy poo poo they are bad at business and math. Most of the shows I sell at cost $1000+ to get into, and I have to compete against people selling 8x10 prints for $20 (I charge $50). Good luck to them selling 75+ prints just to break even on the show costs. There are a few photographers I do these shows with that hate these types with a passion however.

That subreddit is nothing but a dumping ground for farming instagram followers anyways. So everything that's wrong with instagram shows up there too.

The rest of it is random lovely snapshots someone hipfired with their phone.

I do browse it for destinations to try out myself though. Sometimes you see a bad photo of a good spot and want to file it away.

No you see it's a war memorial park. That's why the sky is red. It's not Photoshop; Ares is literally lording over the place and that's just what it looks like when he does that. Otherwise, how would anyone know that it's a war memorial? It's just a bunch of trees.

So I packed up my Salvador Dali print of two blindfolded dental hygienists trying to make a circle on an Etch-a-Sketch and headed for California.
I mentioned this back on page 18, but it's pretty clear now that this dude's got some sort of developmental disability or is on the autism spectrum. It starts feeling bad to make fun of someone for not realizing they're obsessing over unimportant details, or completely misunderstanding what the practical problems are with their ideas when you realize it's not because they're overconfident assholes or egotists, but instead because they legitimately aren't equipped to understand it.

The purple one is best because you can tell the exact point he realized he was in over his head and didn't want to get the brush too close to her knee. Fixing it would require finding a tutorial on how to undo.
