I find cruise ship sinkings incredibly unnerving. The article about the Estonia's sinking has been posted a lot here, I can't find the longform piece that haunts me about it, but it's so scary. This article about the Costa Concordia tragedy is terrifying. And it's even creepier that you can still see the wreck off Isola del Giglio on Google Maps.

oh another unnerving thing is realizing that if the united states government just straight up started putting refugee children in gas chambers, the majority of white americans either wouldn't care, would care but wouldn't do anything, would write some kind of strong letter to their representatives or attend a single protest, or would actively celebrate it, and the majority of white americans regardless of doing one of those things would be very very angry at anyone actually fighting back in a real way whether through violent means or civil disobedience.

Korea is experiencing record breaking temperatures this summer; last night was the hottest night in the 101 years it's been recorded. It's the norm that kids as young as 3 go to, often more than one, private pre-schools, day cares and kindergartens. This is facilitated (and complicated) by a huge industry of bus and van companies and volunteer moms who ride with the children. Between kids schedules changing, them swapping from going home or their grandparents house, early vacations, being passed from an overworked teacher to a tired parent to an exhausted driver, how young the children are... it's awful knowing I could name 10 students who'd have no chance left in a car by themselves. It could happen so easily if 3 stressed out adults aren't overly cautious. We've been ending each day with songs about letting people know you're trapped on the bus. Yesterday the drivers had each student sit in the driver seat, yell and honk the horn. Hug your kids. Edit: To add to this, of course government fuckery is exacerbating this. The only person who must be trained to deal with this are the often elderly bus drivers (the driver in this case was 62). A government representative tried to get a bill going THIS MONTH to get an alarm system installed on the busses, but "it did not reach the floor because of disagreement over whether it was ethical to leave the responsibility of checking the safety of children to an alarm system".
