i mean, that's actually a thing, but probably none of those systems are running windows 10. if only because some other poo poo they rely on probably hasn't been updated since the nt4/win2k era and never will be

there's software that researchers need to run instruments and equipment at my workplace that won't run on anything newer than Win XP. And the workplace is making a huge push at the moment to even get rid of Win 7 devices. So there's going be some big rear end bills coming in soon as researchers find out that to upgrade the software usually means new lab equipment.

research related software is the loving worst. it even makes Adobe look reasonable.

manufacturing is similar. i have a client with $50k-$80k CNC systems that can't communicate with anything newer than SMBv1. some of them have controllers still running dos 5.2 and a tsr smb client. they have a utility for calculating thermal expansion coefficients that hasn't been updated since 2001 and never will be.

a couple of years ago I was doing some large calculations and had no idea that excel just starts rounding things off as it loses precision. a warning message would have been nice and save a whole lot of rework.

you could take scientific notation out of excel altogether. It would help everyone doing business things who don't bother with issues like "precision" and force engineers and scientists to use and learn better tools (and store in better formats like csv).

important thing to remember here is that the expectation that all software will forever be updated, migrated and replaced is the actually insane side of things
