queeb posted:

Is this meet 30 aliens part of the main quest? I dont remember every doing it during atlas rises but its my only quest I have now about 3 hours in, not sure if I missed something somewhere.

It is. Also the "Meeting Aliens"requirement only applies to regular dudes that are just standing and sitting around Outposts and Space Stations, NOT merchants, quest givers or any pilots in their ships. So color me surprised when I find out that all of the dudes I talked to about their ships or took a quest from didn't count.

I wish that Sentinels weren't all over the place now, they're terrible enemies and just bog down my exploration and aren't fun to deal with.

Gonna reinstall this tonight. I知 reading that the hyperdrive bug is still happening, if you have the preorder content. Will that effect new saves, or is it a legacy save issue? Is there a workaround? I知 fine with scrapping my progress if that sorts it out.

It looks like i can't progress any further with the gun dude because instead of using the boltcaster to shoot through the door of the factory, i used my ship, and now even though i shut it down, i didn't get credit for it.

Finding the buried technology to unlock base parts is dumb as all hell because it's always 400u away, and it seems it's like 25 nanite clusters instead of the piece you need 9 times out of 10. and then you scan and the next one is 400u away. and you have to do that 25 fuckin times to unlock a door.

Wouldn't surprise me, I don't get credit for killing animals for the kill animals missions if I kill them with the plasma launcher grenades. I guess there's another reason I shouldn't care if I start over...

One little nitpick I have is that the camera slowly resets itself when I let go of the stick. It's kind of annoying I just want the camera to look where I point it.

Otherwise this game seems really cool. It's like subnautica in space. My nephew is playing it right now on creative mode and all I want to do is boot him off so I can play it. He keeps running in and telling me all the cool stuff he's doing and I'm like NO SHUTUP NO SPOILERS!

That's how it worked in the older versions, but I think during the tutorial the teleporter is locked so I haven't been able to test whether that's still working.

Same. I haven't played since release, so I had a bit of a frustrating first couple minutes when I was getting used to the controls again, didn't realize I had been dumped into a tutorial with instructions on the lower-right, so I was running around frantically looking for my ship as I suffocated to death. A very ignominious death.

Been smooth sailing after that, aside from forgetting to wait to redeem my preorder ship (I can't believe they never fixed this bug). Now I'm torn between warping to the next system or starting over. :argh:

I'm in it for the exploration so I don't much care for multiplayer, or third-person, or even base building, but the updates to the procgen landscapes, clouds, rings, etc. are all awesome.

One kinda strange bug though: weather on our second planet (following the questline) is not consistent anymore since we both built our houses. I can have a firestorm while it's nice and balmy for him. I guess our weather desynced when the scripted weather change happened while building our houses.

Some random pics I threw onto Twitter: (Also I learned I don't know how to embed Twitter-pics into SA.)

Your Starship is on a mountain

This was when I learned that the procgen really is better this time around.

Doom Plants

My entire starting planet had these weird smoking doom plants everywhere.

Three seconds later: Firestorm

To get this one very important part for repairing my ship, I had to climb down my mountain on the other side and cross this rather hilly landscape. Three seconds after I started to climb down, a firestorm arrived to slowly roast me.

Cave too late

On my way back to the ship I stumbled over some caves. Those would have been a loving good place to hide from that firestorm earlier! :argh:

Double Refiner

Some dumbassery on my part resulted in me building the refinery, twice. Of course I deleted that second one, but wow I'm dumb.

my second planet was def a very habitable one (besides the scalding hot rain)

i need to get more in the habit of refining stuff. it takes like 17 condensed carbon to fill up a refinery, but 50 or 60 stock carbon barely bumps the fuel bar.

are there bigger and better refineries or does it start and end with the lovely tiny one?

My spawn planet was mildly radioactive, also in the system was a hot planet with rings and a no-hazard planet with a lot of water and animals.

I don't think building multiple refineries is necessarily dumb, you have twice the conversion rate if you want to make a metric fuckload of something. That'll probably be important for building the really huge bases that were promised.

Do bases have a purpose besides building a one-room hut to hide from environmental damage? In Terraria it was worth building bigger and bigger bases to attract NPCs who'd be vendors and stuff, and in Subnautica an undersea base let you construct more complex items and have more room than the tiny lifeboat, does NMS have similar things?

The tutorial text itself hints that there are "permanent" base-based refiners that can take multiple inputs (and thus can produce goods you normally have to craft into your inventory). If it let you chain the outputs of a refiner into the inputs of others, you could get a rudimentary assembly line going, but I doubt that'll be possible because HG seems to really want you to be flipping stuff through your inventory all the time.

I'd probably be happy if the stacking limits for everything in the personal inventory were doubled, and made something like x5 for the ship inventory. (Or even have stacking limits be something upgradable using upgrade modules).

Eventually you'll get quests to hire specialists. There's tech, engineering, farming, and weapons.

This is how you're able to unlock new parts for the base, farming, and the exocraft.

gently caress the "quick menu". gently caress the inconsistent use of q/e vs a/d. gently caress the fact that the game won't just let me bind things sensibly to my keyboard.

Pickle: Inspected.

You know how the stations now have a "room in the back" that replicates what the old station rooms used to look like? One of mine was just completely empty except for a couple plants and a tiny window outside... which was perfectly aligned to show off a couple planets. It was so pretty I took a photo.

I don't doubt this is partially programmed in to happen (pay attention to when you'll see other ships flying in the sky, it's very much a programmed thing to make ships fly around in formation wherever you're hanging out. plus certain things in the game will always point towards the system's station) but dang if it didn't feel like a special moment.

(After seeing enough ringed planets... they kinda need to fix how the rings are lit. Just sayin.)

Yes. This. The q/e a/d thing drives me insane. Mousewheel not working in SOME menus where you have to hit w/s to scroll up and down is obnoxious too. Clearly designed for a controller and mashed into KB+M to make it mostly work.

I tried 3p on foot for a while before turning it off, same with flight. After a while, I turned it back on for on-foot because it just looks so good, though I imagine it would be really painful to engage in combat that way. For flight I keep first person because despite their claims of making them better, the low-level flight controls and feel are abysmal and I don't want to exacerbate that by not being able to see exactly where I'm going.

The camera rotation controls while in third person are also kind of crap. I hope they loosen up how big of an angle you can swing the camera around.

I'm having a lot of fun and will probably get way more than $30's worth of this game, but I'm in 100% agreement that the controls seem to have absolutely no thought put into them whatsoever. The 'quick menu' absolutely does not live up to its name in any way.

I assume it functions way better on a controller, but on a kb/m a lot of things are super questionable.
