I hear NASA spent 40 000 000 000 dollars developing a moon rocket and the Soviets just used a pencil.

And the name of that pencil? Albert Einstein.

PS for anyone who didn't already know the "space pen" wasn't developed by NASA at all.

Pencils weren't used either, they used wax markers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grease_pencil) sharpened by pulling a string.

The Soviet Union used 50 000 000 000 000 000 rubles to go into space. The Americans just used a studio and a hobo-looking dude with a camera.

Also, the anecdote of Buzz resetting a circuit breaker with a space pen is inaccurate. He used a marker because he wanted something that wasn't conductive to jam into a broken electrical device (space pens are all metal because they wanted as few flammable objects on board after Apollo 1).

The funny thing is the space pen urban legend could have easily ended up as a "government waste vs private ingenuity" thing instead, because when Fischer invented the space pen NASA was paying something like $150 for special mechanical pencils, versus the $3 they ended up paying for the pens.

The Soviets also started using the space pen shortly after NASA did, because NASA gave them 100 space pens as a gift to promote international goodwill and so on.

ROFL that dude on the left is like yeah whatever all you have to do is apply the tiniest bit of pressure and this board will snap as he holds it up. Its still super cool but its just gravity at that point.

Yeah I mean those boards break super easy but a triple kick or a back flip is still bad-rear end on their own so it's all good!

Eric turned the corner into the darkened alley. He'd taken this short cut home several times before, but always before dark. The shadows stretched across the pavement and he thought he heard hushed whispering as he entered. As he slowly made his through he could feel a tension in the air. Something was wrong. Something was very wrong.

"Looks like you chose the wrong alley to cut through kid."

The voice echoed through the alley and a group of tough looking drop ceiling tiles stepped out from behind a dumpster.

Eric smiled, he'd been training his whole life for this exact moment.

"Guess I did," he said as he tightened his black belt.
