Having to take espionage to get the cav power policy is what really makes it suboptimal, because econ might not be an absolute must have but it's sure better than espionage.

Aristocratic is a niche idea group, you're almost always better off picking offensive or defensive. I find it has it's uses for Austria and Poland or some of the HRE starts, the -10% AE and 20% improve relations policy (Admin + Aristocratic) is pretty good. Religious + Aristocratic gives you -1 unrest and +1 missionary strength. The ideas itself are slightly worse than those of defensive/offensive. The leader siege and tradition decay will help you finish wars quicker, the extra manpower helps with making them less costly. Autonomy and absolutism are always nice too. I guess it suffers from tech cost modifiers not being that great anymore and cavalry being useless post 1500.

That's just bad luck, either Denmark or Poland will declare on one of the orders and you can steal provinces during those wars. If there's weird alliances or those wars don't happen you have to restart. With the new rules Riga is too small to get alliances, so your only chance is to steal provinces from the Livonian order after they are beaten.

drat, anyone have any advice? I've hit rock/hard place territory. I'm Nitra, going for the Great Moravia achievement. My allies are Austria and Denmark. Denmark was on its way to becoming super-Denmark but Sweden just rebelled and it's going to lose. (They called me in and I had to peace out because I simply couldn't afford the war anymore). Between a hellwar with Poland where they took a few provinces from my vassal Silesia and said Swedish independence war I'm about 830 ducats in debt, and have a low income. I can boot some advisors, I already disbanded a cavalry regiment and a cannon. My rivals are Bohemia, Wallachia, and Poland. But things got annoying. Bohemia just decided to ally Poland, and Wallachia is allied to Muscovy. Denmark is turning out to be a bad ally, especially when Poland or Muscovy get involved, because instead of joining up by going through the HRE they like to try and siege down through Muscovy/Poland, splitting our forces. I can't just drop Denmark though because Austria won't join offensive wars against Bohemia due to being the emperor. I can probably attack Serbia and try to leverage that war to annul the Wallachia/Muscovy alliance which will at least give me room to feed Hungary after the truce is up even if that direction doesn't immediately help the achievement. I have no idea what to do with Poland/Bohemia though. Bohemia is allied to Augsburg, but I have no idea how I'd get a CB on them. There are a few ways, but they're low % (like the reneging on a loan one). Bohemia is Poland's only ally. Nobody else strong really wants to be my ally. Nobody strong enough to justify going over my diplo limit at least. What should I do? Pry Wallachia and Muscovy apart and then just wait for attack of opportunity against my real avenues of expansion? I'm a bit concerned about getting repeatedly beat up by Poland/Lithuania. Basically, I'm just stuck between a bunch of strong alliances, and my own ally. With my diplo relations limit and Austria's dominance it's also unlikely I'll be the emperor within the next 50 years or so. I haven't been bothering to play the HRE game because I'm on the fringes and need stronger allies than the electors tend to be.

Linear Zoetrope posted:drat, anyone have any advice? I've hit rock/hard place territory. It looks like Poland / Lithuania have had some trouble that led to Polotsk getting released (and growing a bit, it looks like). I'd wait, look for an opportunity where they get involved in a war with either the Ottomans or Muscovy/Russia, and then strike. Get the Silesian cores back, get Krakow and Nowy Sacz, and annul their alliance with Bohemia. They won't be able to form the Commonwealth until they take Danzig from Pommerania, which generally makes them a bit weaker, but allows another alliance slot... In the meantime, keep those claims on the two provinces up, and build back your economy. When the reformation rolls around and the Leagues form, you'll want to be on the winner side, which ever side that is. Ideally that leads to a weaker HRE, given the number of HRE provinces you'll need to take. Expand in non-achievement directions at opportunities, but keep a watch out for Ottoman permanent claims. IIRC the ones on Hungary come after those on Serbia/Bosnia, so as long as those still exist, you won't be a primary target of theirs. Looks like you've got a good start, and there's plenty of time left.

My first time attempting Court and Country and hoo boy doing that while in three separate wars against Japan, Pasai/Ming, and the loving Ottomans as a built up Cebu was wild. Fortunately the Great Britain-style wooden wall is rather effective!

Linear Zoetrope posted:drat, anyone have any advice? I've hit rock/hard place territory. How are your relations with Muscovy? I'm guessing they are rivaled to Denmark so if you drop them as an ally you might be able to pick up Muscovy instead. If you have any orthodox provinces you could try flipping orthodox for the extra relations boost as well.

One thing I learned after going through it the first time is it's okay to sometimes take the hit to absolutism in an event because you can generate so much during those 10 years you'll more than likely hit your max. Especially the noble rebel ones.

Yeah, I looked at it as basically how I manage Patriarchy, in that if I'm already at max or near enough then losing a bit is perfectly acceptable. I definitely backed out a number of the early rebel ones because my Absolutism was already high enough from Harsh Treatments (Golden Age + that mission reducing the cost for 25 years means 38 milpoints against base 50) trying to keep my country from falling apart while in those three wars.

Ottomans and Russia inevitably clash against each other, especially when the Ottos eat Crimea. I feel like there's a good chance that Wallachia gets overrun by Ottomans and you could snipe Transylvania when that war comes. Ottomans and Russia should also smash Poland/Lithuania up pretty badly so you could expand northeast when that happens. If you're running a budget surplus then it might be worth sitting around for a few years and waiting for everything around you to break on its own.

Yeah, thanks, I played a bit more. Still haven't managed to take land from Bohemia or Poland (whose Alliances have just gotten out of control), because I ended up on the same side on the league war as both, but I did manage to win it and use it to snipe Wallachia without Russia getting involved. Russia and I are friends now, at some point Russia crowbared Poland/Lithuania apart, but now they're just allies. Things are more manageable right now, I just have to deal with the fact that my non-Russia allies refuse to attack Bohemia or Poland. I think I can win a war with just Russia though. But first, Russia just had to declare a conquest war on the Ottomans and call me in.

today's dev diary: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/eu4-development-diary-31st-of-july-2018.1112773/&sdpDevPosts=1 Centers of trade are getting an overhaul; there'll be three levels to them, and if you get the expansion they can shift in levels dynamically (up and down) and you can also upgrade them with cash. Seems neat.

Had a really, really depressing moment in a Prussia game just now. At the end of the League War my king had died and my heir was two, so the title of Emperor got given to Lorraine instead. I figured yeah, fair, whatever. It took like eighty years to get into a position to inherit after the second Lorraine Emperor lived to 70. I had four supporters lined up. Suddenly, some bit flips--I'm not sure what--and every single elector passes me up... To make the three-year old Lorraine heir Emperor. So loving mad. How the hell does that even work?

Tbh, this game needed a Balkan based dlc on day one. Every existing or formable country in the region should have tons of missions to reclaim their ancestral homelands. Also there are not nearly enough nation-tags in the area. As it stands, the region isn't anywhere near the unstable powder barrel it should be. I want constant dumb revolts which encourages an increasingly tyrannical approach to controlling the place as an empire, which in turn only makes the place even more unstable. plz hire me paradox tia

Groogy, how much work goes into those regional revamps that sometimes get rolled out between DLCs? Do they just happen when there's a few weeks in the DLC pipeline where there's a lot of other work like programming going on, and the content designers don't have much to do?
|
# ? Aug 2, 2018 07:02 |
|
Quite a bunch, not only on the content designers part but also in planning from me and Jake on what we should cover and how much we can cover. I also jump in and do bunch of support to content design on whatever they can't do themselves. During the same time we have coders deal with a lot of tech debt and make the code base generally better and "healthier".

Wouldn't it be a lot easier if you incorporated all the old DLC into a GOTY/complete edition and balanced around that? I mean I get you don't want EU5 for now, but I feel the game would benefit a lot from a big clean up of old content.

Groogy, is there any plan to alter the way separatist rebels enforce their demands? Had an instance yesterday where I'd captured all of Naples, but then a stack of 18 Neapolitan separatists spawned in Malta. Before I had the chance to build enough cogs to transport my troops there to deal with them, the rebels enforced their demands and I lost the entirety of Naples, despite the rebels being confined to a single island. Seems kind of silly. One would think they'd gain independence only for the areas they'd occupied.
