After Daybreak: The Liberation of Bergen-Belsen is an interesting book that is primarily about the medical field figuring out how to deal with the surviving concentration camp inmates and keep them alive, but it also includes some really interesting details about what happened right after liberation, I keep meaning to mention it in this thread lately but forgetting.

Speaking of World War II horrors, my wife and I had been watching our way through The Twilight Zone and I got to reading Rod Serling's wikipedia page. Holy poo poo.wikipedia posted:Serling's time in Leyte shaped his writing and political views for the rest of his life. He saw death every day while in the Philippines, at the hands of his enemies and his allies, and through freak accidents such as that which killed another Jewish private, Melvin Levy. Levy was delivering a comic monologue for the platoon as it rested under a palm tree when a food crate was dropped from a plane above, decapitating him. Serling led the funeral services for Levy and placed a Star of David over his grave.[4]:45 Serling later set several of his scripts in the Philippines and used the unpredictability of death as a theme in much of his writing.[4]:46 After the war, Serling was understandably kind of hosed up. quote:After being discharged from the Army in 1946, Serling worked at a rehabilitation hospital while recovering from his wounds. It left him with nightmares and flashbacks for the rest of his life... His knee troubled him for years. Later, his wife became accustomed to the sound of him falling down the stairs when his knee buckled under his weight. During college after the war, Serling worked as an I-poo poo-you-not parachute tester. I didn't know that was a job! quote:For extra money in his college years, Serling worked part-time testing parachutes for the United States Army Air Forces. According to his radio station coworkers, he received $50 for each successful jump and had once been paid $500 (half before and half if he survived) for a hazardous test.[4]:58 His last test jump was a few weeks before his wedding. In one instance, he earned $1,000 for testing a jet ejection seat that had killed the previous three testers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_Serling

So I recently had to stop listening to a musician, William Control (the solo electronic project of Will Francis, the former lead singer of Aiden) after a bunch of poo poo came out about really hosed up sex stuff he was doing. This Tumblr blog is where it all started and it turned into a huge thing over the past few months, while this Altpress writer worked to consolidate some information and statements from Will and his lawyer into something more comprehensive. It was especially disturbing for me to read because of how physically close I was to some of the stories. One of the stories on the blog is from a girl who was raped by him shortly before a show, and looking at the city and date I realized that it was right before the first show I saw him at. This guy was brutalizing a young girl my age while I was driving to the venue. I feel terrible in some way because I got a few other people into his music, but also because my ex (who was one of them) is exactly the kind of vulnerable and mentally ill girl that he would target. The short version is that he worked to create a sort of cult of personality around himself, finding young girls (including grooming underage ones) with traumatic pasts, mental illnesses, and other problems in their lives that would lead them to idolize him and crave attention from a famous musician. He would then use this to engage in horrifically violent BDSM without any limits or full consent, just brutally beating them and raping them whenever he felt like it, while relying on prior consent to BDSM and them coming back due to their lack of self-esteem to keep himself legally in the clear instead of getting charged with anything. Here are some of the most disturbing bits from the story. Be warned that both the article and the blog have some incredibly disturbing sexual content, including graphic pictures on the blog: quote:Alternative Press spoke with a number of women who detailed the nature of their relationships and experiences with Francis. While all of their stories are different, there are some common threads among them including the tattoos for Francis, contracts signed in blood and the prayer (see below) Francis reportedly asked them to recite for him. quote:In January of 2017, during her visit to the Extended Stay America in Federal Way, she says Francis demanded to search through her phone, and when she refused he forced a gun in her mouth. On another occasion (Aug. 25, 2016, in Federal Way), she says he forced her to flush all of her birth control pills down the toilet. quote:On one of her visits to the U.S. she says she didn’t have money that she was supposed to bring, but she didn’t tell him before she came because she was worried he wouldn’t see her. She says when he found out he was very angry and during their encounter he beat her like never before, hitting her in the face and stomach with his fists and when she fell to the ground, kicking her. quote:Of the branding incident, Melanie says it was a direct result of her refusing to get a tattoo of a “W” on her pelvic area. “He asked me to get this tattoo, and I told him no,” she recalls. “His reaction to that the next time he saw me was to tie me down, put a gag in my mouth so I couldn’t say no and carve his initial into my chest.” quote:At one point in January of 2015, she says she ended up taking a leave of absence from work for nearly six months due to severe depression. “William wouldn’t let me [commit suicide], mainly because he wanted to decide when I was going to do it because he has a death fetish,” she says. “He told pretty much all of us, I think, that we would kill ourselves for him one day.”

fruit on the bottom posted:I can’t help but wonder if he was hoping the seat would kill him too, at least on some level I read that and thought the same thing. It reads exactly like Sterling came back from the war fey. "Another Viking term was "fey." People now understand it to mean effeminate. Previously it meant odd, and before that uncanny, fairylike. That was back when fairyland was the most sinister place people could imagine. The Old Norse word meant "doomed." It was used to refer to an eerie mood that would come over people in battle, a kind of transcendent despair. The state was described vividly by an American reporter, Tom Lea, in the midst of the desperate Battle of Peleliu in the South Pacific. He felt something inside of himself, some instinctive psychic urge to keep himself alive, finally collapse at the sight of one more dead soldier in the ruins of a tropical jungle: "He seemed so quiet and empty and past all the small things a man could love or hate. I suddenly knew I no longer had to defend my beating heart against the stillness of death. There was no defense." There was no defense -- that's fey. People go through battle willing the bullet to miss, the shelling to stop, the heart to go on beating -- and then they feel something in their soul surrender, and they give in to everything they've been most afraid of. It's like a glimpse of eternity. Whether the battle is lost or won, it will never end; it has wholly taken over the soul. Sometimes men say afterward that the most terrifying moment of any battle is seeing a fey look on the faces of the soldiers standing next to them. But the fey becomes accessible to civilians in a war too -- if the war goes on long enough and its psychic effects become sufficiently pervasive. World War II went on so long that both soldiers and civilians began to think of feyness as a universal condition. They surrendered to that eternity of dread: the inevitable, shattering resumption of an artillery barrage; the implacable cruelty of an occupying army; the panic, never to be overcome despite a thousand false alarms, at an unexpected knock on the door, or a telegram, or the sight out the front window of an unfamiliar car pulling to a halt. They got so used to the war they reached a state of acquiescence, certain they wouldn't stop being scared until they were dead. It was in a fey mood that, in the depths of the German invasion, Russian literary scholar Mikhail Bakhtin took the only copy of his life's work, a study of Goethe, and ripped it up, page by page and day by day, for that unobtainable commodity, cigarette paper. It was because feyness poisons ordinary life that British writer Walter de la Mare could in 1943 begin a poem about the English countryside with the line "No, they are only birds" and not bother to say what he'd first thought they were. Everyone knew; they had learned the reflex of sudden terror, followed by infinite relief, triggered by the sight of small black forms moving quickly against a bright sky. And it was out of a fey despair that French composer Olivier Messiaen, while in a POW camp, wrote a work that may best define the war's particular horror. He scored it for the only instruments available -- two violins, a clarinet, and a battered upright piano -- and it received its world premiere before an audience of prisoners (the most attentive and respectful audience Messiaen said he'd ever had). It isn't a composition filled with nostalgia for what the war had destroyed or hope for what might survive; it gravely moves from bizarre turbulence to an agonized stillness, a prayer for relief from life and the cruelty of hope. Quatour pour la fin du temps, he called it, "Quartet for the End of Time." " from a favorite work, http://www.leesandlin.com/articles/LosingTheWar.htm

Leavemywife posted:That last sentence is one of the most unsettling things I've read this thread. It really shows how the abuse worked. The girl he raped before the first show I saw him in talked about how she suffered from bipolar disorder and had a kinda crappy home life, so getting attention from a "rock star" like him was addictive. Other girls who had worse mental illnesses or more severe trauma in their life fell into it even harder and would keep seeing him even as he literally beat them bloody without consent and demanded money. He created a cult environment where being without him felt like it would be worse than being with him, to the extent that the girls with mental illnesses may feel suicidally depressed without him. Which he loved, since the dude's got a serious death fetish. The death fetish makes sense in retrospect when you listen to some of his music and read his writings. He wrote a book series about an atheist and his girlfriend dying in a car crash, whereupon he discovered that by being baptized as a child he still got into Heaven but his unsaved girlfriend was consigned to Hell. He flipped off St. Peter, found a way to come back to life, and lived a night of extreme hedonism before killing himself to find her in Hell. Other songs were about subjects like suicide and living together in death. It's one of those things where it just seems like typical angsty music, then you find out "Oh he actually wasn't kidding and wants these girls dying for him."
