70s were better in a lot of ways tho? Unless you were a minority. But one does not really cancel out the other.

Having living wages without massive college loans or higher education, possibility of having a one-earner household without being megarich, and so on. Stronger unions too.

I can 100% believe that Russians had it better under communism, because at least the government pretended to care about society and infrastructure and you could always steal or con your way into getting whatever necessities you needed. After the Soviet Union fell apart everything got privatized and no one in power gives a single gently caress about anything.

But was there delicious contraband Oltermanni?

e: Why isn't there a Border Security: Australia's Front Line style show about the Russian border where instead of every episode being 80% Chinese old ladies smuggling 40 kg of plant diseases hidden in their shoes and 20% coked-up New Zealanders, it's 100% people from St. Petersburg trying to smuggle in Finnish cheeses?

I would think that a straight up mercenary would be more of a risk to secrecy. Where as a "company man" might be more likely to keep it quiet.

Or maybe the type of professional who can do all that stuff isn't going to do it for less than a high salary and benefits/retirement?

Contractor means you own the services, but employee you own the soldier. Sorry, protection specialist.

Ah yes, the pittance I pay them is better than the poverty they lived in, I'm a good guy. Just like when I gave that woman $5 for a blowjob behind the Walgreens where she bought her kid's medicine. Goddamn my bleeding heart.
