It already tracks landless characters with armies with its adventurer mechanics. Although they aren't playable and only have two modes - a)fight a claim war or b)raid until squashed or offered land.

In return for supplying fresh recruits to the Roman army, the Quadi were to be allowed to leave in peace. However, before the envoys left they were granted an audience with Valentinian. The envoys insisted that the conflict was caused by the building of Roman forts in their lands; furthermore individual bands of Quadi were not necessarily bound to the rule of the chiefs who had made treaties with the Romans – and thus might attack the Romans at any time. The attitude of the envoys so enraged Valentinian that he suffered a burst blood vessel in the skull while angrily yelling at them, provoking his death on November 17, 375.

Ok, I'm finally getting close to finishing off a full Charlemagne ironman start. I've done plenty of games from the Old Gods and high middle ages, but I always got bored at like 1100 from Charlemagne so I never got the cheevo. Now the Kingdom of Frisia is alive and well at 1275, having gained its independence in like 900 when the HRE and the empire of Germania split in a brutal succession war. Ideally these last 150 years or so will be fairly peaceful but its getting to the point where my one gigaduchy/retinue can't produce enough troops to prevent at least one or two rebellions each time my ruler dies. I do have plenty of cash, so I've been using mercs to solve for this, but it is getting dicier.

Honestly, taking the suggestion from earlier in the thread to raise a bunch of ambitious, spymaster daughters and then sending them off to marry second or third sons of neighboring powers has paid major dividends. There have been at least three succession wars in the HRE in the last 60 years because the people in the way of my new son-in-law just keep up and dying to food poisoning! Chefs in the HRE and Germania need some licensing or something.

It should be noted that the pretty borders faction is long dead in Frisia, and may never be revived until I convert it to EU4 and sell some provinces or something.

Are you making non-aggression pacts with your vassals? I find the best way to smooth out the transition is to save a few relatives for after your heir succeeds you and marry them off for NAPs with your biggest, crankiest vassals in order to head off their factions.

The devil worshipper cults aren't an actual religion in the game. They're a secret society that has members from all kinds of different religions. Well this kind of depends. Basically all the abrahamic religions use Lucifer's Own, and some of the non-abrahamic religions have their own flavor of devil worshippers that only inlcude members of their religion.

But as long as your character has a sinful trait you can basically put it out there that you're down with devil worship. You do this by hitting the Societies tab and opening up the side panel that lists all your available societies. The devil worshipper one should have an icon next to it with a tiny little red exclamation point on it. You click that and you're on your way. Sooner or later a member of their secret society will contact you and start saying things that question your religion. You just go with the flow and before you know it you're carving an unholy symbol into your arm and banging a member to seal the deal. Then you're in.

From there you want high Intrigue to gain more Dark Power and you'll be given missions to sacrifice various people, desecrate temples, and impregnate female members with devilspawn. You'll get events involving perverse orgies and hosed up dreams that lead to you maybe brutally murdering somebody because your dude takes the dream as a sign of trouble, and so on.

Basically if you're playing a game type where murder is extremely important (like republics) devil worshippers are a good choice. It's especially nice if you rise to the top rank because at that point all members will always agree with any diplomatic proposal, including vassalization! They'll also agree to come to your court which is useful because you can flood your court with very agreeable subordinates who will super-juice up your plot chances.

E: oh eh there's downsides, of course. You're gonna pick up more sinful traits over time and even congenital defects like ugly, hunchbacked, clubfooted, etc. Also if you get too crazy with the Satan magic people will figure you out and stuff like excommunication can happen.

Don't forget the kidnapping! As a devil worshiper (or assassin) you can kidnap anyone not related to a duke or above. If you kidnap unlanded unmarried characters you can then recruit them from your prison just like any other prisoner. They won't like you very much, but that doesn't really matter for military commanders or chinese specialists.

If your primary religion allows concubines you can kidnap unlanded women, even married women, and force them to become your concubines. From there you can marry them off to whoever you like. They won't like you very much, but they will like whoever you married them off to just fine. Good times if you like playing the eugenics game. (This usually can't get you claims on any title above count.)

If you kidnap small children you can try to educate them into switching to your religion and culture. That can be useful if you want try to matri-marry the sayyid trait into your line or something.

I tried out the character creator for the first time in my Georgia game, and dwarfism's great. It gives you more points for other traits, and then you can use your relatives for court dwarves. A real shame that run somehow got corrupted.

The latest dev diary made systems to boost the reconquista and help holy orders get established in eastern Europe. I hope that means weaker Umayyad blobs, and it'll probably make things more dynamic overall for Christendom to crush paganism, although it's a little bittersweet to not have weird pagan artifacts or the occasional NPC reformation.

I have not tried that! That may be worth doing. Last night I took a few hammers to the bigger duchies throughout my kingdoms after one of the rebellions, so that will probably smooth things out for a time. I also finally disabled internal war after disbanding the council. Feels so good man.

merchant republics are great. you're a jumped up commoner with more money than god who can buy all of the mercenaries and become a big time player

-you are locked into the 'five families' succession. this is not hard to manipulate with piles of gold and constant, ruthless murder

-really if you thought that you needed to murder people before you played republics, whoo boy. wow. its just a constant borgia style murder fest. scheming satanists are extremely powerful as republican patricians

-trade posts are your number one priority, aside from unceasing murder. you want to have a big, contiguous trade zone. it is important that your trade zone is one large single piece. a trade zone that is 7 posts big is better than two trade zones of 4 posts each. you will control a sea zone if you hold a majority of trade posts adjacent to that zone. preference "trade value" over "tax income", especially in posts where you don't hold a city

-expansion is easy because you have a CB to grab any city in a province where you have a trade post, then later you can grab the county

-you can also grab cities for your other rival patricians. this is great if they are a different religion and you have the free religious title revocation policy

-retinues are more important. you will be pissing cash so having a big retinue is no big deal. a beastly republic will hardly ever need to raise vassal levies, retinue and personal levies will often do the job

-don't land your sons if possible. every adult male of your dynasty in your court is +1 trade post you can hold. also you will want to have city level vassals because castle holders will get a malus to a liege of the "wrong type". remember that cities are not hereditary, so if you land your dynasty with a city and no castles then eventually it will pass to some rando! one trick you can do if you have surplus males is grant them a newly conquered castle or two, place them as a baron beneath a mayor count, then harvest a crop of young adult men in 20 years by inviting them to your court

I've got another newbie confusion question. My France start is going OK so far (my next succession is gonna be horrible, my only son ended up with 6 diplo so everyone's gonna hate him)

One thing I know is going to happen sooner or later is a major war with the Umayyads. I've been keeping an eye on troop counts just so I know how bad it'll be, and I noticed something weird:

How does he have 2k/1k personal levies, and 23k/14k vassal levies? Is the over cap troop levies a Sunni thing?

OK, so, I'm thinking of making an events and flavor mod based on a kind of eldritch horror theme. Basically, in addition to expanding a few of the Cthulhu-related events that you get as a lunatic Norse, and the Necronomicon that you get when you take the Mystic option in Scholarship, I want to add a bunch of other events that kind of build on that. For example, if you're on a coastal county, there's a chance that a treasure chest might wash up on shore that leads you on an event chain to discover a sunken city, etc. Or explore a town hiding some kind of horrifying fish cult (with the option to become a fish cultist yourself of course). There'd be a bunch of secret cults you could join, human sacrifices, and so on, and maybe a couple that could mirror the End of the Cycle and EMBRACE THE WORM from Stellaris.

Any suggestions or things you'd personally want to see in such a mod?

Oh yeah they are hell of powerful but it can't be repeated enough. Never stop stabbing. Ever. That post before about constant murder? Yeah. Prune the other houses pretty much nonstop. There will always be five but you can keep them from being a problem.

It's kind of a slow start but before long you'll have an insane fire hose of gold. The absolute first thing you should do is make sure you have your capital's trading post. Then get the capital's cities. You can hold both cities and castles but you want more cities. The gold income is loving bonkers. Holding the castle in your capital is still handy for that levy boost.

If you play Venice spam spear dudes. The morale bonus from their special building makes them punch way above their weight. For maximum fun start tribal in Scandinavia then go republic.

A mayor in your court having some kind of event chain because their town is all in some kind of cult or it's silent hill would be neat. Maybe an event for there being some kind of ancient city full of shoggoths underground? I don't know if the hellmouth event is still in the game.

The trouble is most Lovecraft stuff that I know of doesn't want to be something actionable, just characters going crazy and dying. Maybe a bunch of flavor events like getting mind-swapped by the Great Race of Yith? Or some cult popping up (or joining a cult) that can go through some special actions and bring about the awakening or return of some elder god that can bring the game to an early end?

Just suggestions. I like to read about Lovecraft a lot, but I've never had much interest in the original stories.
