STOMP'N ON INTO THE POWERLINES

Exciting Lemon

Eej posted:

There was a great thread a couple days ago that I can't find anymore cause Twitter search sucks but it was about how Polynesian migration success varied greatly based on what kind of islands they ended up on. On the low islands with minimal freshwater and arable land they could barely survive even though they could walk around and breathe the air and catch fish from the ocean as compared to a space colony.

Also there are massive nickel deposits in Australia that haven't been touched because they're too difficult to reach and thus uneconomical. Space mining is obviously magnitudes more expensive and harder to do.

Basically at this point in time putting people in space is stupid and we should take that money, look at the stars with robots and spend the rest on not turning the only habitual rock in the known galaxy into a thermal shithole

The key financial factor that I’ve seen deliberately avoided in every comparison about this is the ecological cost. In space you could do things eqivelent to strip mining and dumping coal ash in the rivers. Your only concern need be loose debris and dust being flung away from the local area. While you still need large machines for things like crushing and grinding but your equipment overhead for motion in the local area drops to almost nothing.

It’s also a matter of scale. You take an average asteroid and you can reinvest 90% of it’s metals into resource extraction infrastructure and the remaining 10% is enough for a Oneil cylinder or two

So yes in the big picture if your only measure is monetary sale value on earth it’s a wash. May as well just slowly deplete terrestrial deposits. But if your goal in anyway involves doing other stuff in space than you win out by doing bulk material processing in space.

I actually think re-establishing US Space Command is a good idea; abolishing it to make room for NORTHCOM was dumb...there's no real reason to restrict the number of COCOMs to 10. A separate service though? Nope.

Edit:

DoktorLoken posted:

Why does this have to be a separate service instead of a combatant command? I mean it'd be one thing if we had large amounts of military personnel actually in space, seems a bit premature at the moment.

It's going to be both. No, that doesn't make much sense.

I guess Bernie fit into the classic mold of a crotchety old leftist professor so they could fit him into their existing world model, but having someone young, unafraid, and unwilling to back down an inch is breaking their brains.

It really is an endless conga line of people with zero self awareness that start from the basis that he is superior, and therefore owes Shapiro what he wants and it's her failure to not give it.

There's an argument that right wing media is used to owning centrists and liberals who don't stand for anything and can't adjust to AOC. It's easy to strawman someone who makes only vague promises. Putting forward clear concise policy ideas is much much harder to deal with and the right wing is too fat and lazy from making GBS threads on liberals to pull it off effectively.

To pull from the latest issue of the New York Magazine.

The triumph of the neoliberal consensus, post-1989, was to naturalize the economy. Here are these laws that are fairly apolitical, untouchable, the equivalent of the laws of nature. What the financial crisis, and then the response to the financial crisis, did was to denaturalize that again. What was once viewed as laws of nature are once more seen as laws of men. And the laws of men can be changed.

Libertarians cannot accept that political economics is the original and rightful form of economics.
