A thread discussing Obsolete and failed stuff could be pretty cool in GBS, but seems like the GBS mods are going GUNGHO again on pigeonholing threads into subforums, so any threads you would make would be closed or just shunted out.

Wasn't the Tech Relics thread originally in GBS? I don't know how long it's been over here, but that does make it seem unlikely that this thread is moving anywhere.

Tech Relics was originally GBS iirc. That's why there's two threads, one was in GBS and the mods decided to move it when GBS was removed for a while and then just never moved it back.

If someone wanted to start a successful, fresh and new thread on failed, aged and old tech over in GBS, I'd be cool with this one getting closed. We've had a good six years, better than the Vita or WiiU, I guess.

I found a nice old Monroe calculator at a thrift shop a little while back. Think it was made around 1971-73. It's kind of a weird blend of older and newer technologies; they'd ditched discrete transistors and diodes for ICs but were still sticking with Nixies for the display instead of switching to something a bit more economical like VFD or Panaplex. Only calculator I've ever seen with a 13-digit display. It doesn't do floating point logic, so you need to use the dial on the left to manually set how many significant digits you want the calculator to math poo poo out to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXzSZVgQwts This is what's called a hot-bulb engine. Possibly one of the simplest internal combustion engines: you heat up part of it with a blowtorch and then a bit of fuel oil gets dropped in and flashes, driving the piston. They were obsolete by the 1910s and ceased being produced in the early 50s as small diesel engines became more powerful and cheaper. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M6vKAr6bzo
