Parity doesn’t really exist in the majority of major professional sports leagues on earth.

Soccer also has a bazillion club tournaments so not everything is about winning your league, which doesn't even have a postseason in most cases

Mahoning posted:Parity doesn’t really exist in the majority of major professional sports leagues on earth. I think the thing is, there's two types of parity in sports: -Game parity, or equal chance of winning an individual game -Championship parity, or equal chance of winning it all The first is better if you ask me because you're watching a game and don't know who's going to win. The second is a bit of a thing because in a 30 team league, assuming each team won it in a 30 year span, the first team to win will have a 30 year "drought".

Yea I totally get people who don’t wanna pay $5 more for ESPN+ on principle but it’s got a ton of stuff and I’d imagine that’ll only grow as CFB and NFL start up. Also, UFC comes to the service in January. And the entire 30 for 30 archive alone is worth $5 a month from me.
|
# ? Aug 13, 2018 22:44 |
|
Right now 30 for 30 is just the only thing really as a draw to ESPN+ and that's more of a "subscribe for a month" thing. But I totally see the appeal. At a different stage of my life where I was consuming every sport imaginable I could see being into it. And I could definitely see subscribing for particular events or something.

The only thing it has that I really want to watch is some FCS and midmajor football and man actually paying for Sun Belt football is a big ask, even as perhaps the world's biggest fan of the Sun Belt who did not actually attend school there

If you get ESPN+, you'll get early round FA Cup games between teams you might have heard of and teams you will definitely think are made up, in stadiums which are little more than four concrete banks and a tin roof. Totally worth it imo

I still don't see how they make money on this. The UFC deal is $150 million a year. You'd need 3 million subscribers just to break even with just that. To put it in perspective, Fight Pass only has like half a million subscribers. The new soccer deals is just over $18 million a year. So that means you need at least 350,000 subscribers to cover those fees. I know the other stuff they are carrying like CFL, Ivy League, etc is small potatoes that cost little to host, but it still adds up. Maybe I'm underestimating the demand for this kind of stuff but it seems like they'd need well over 5 million subscribers to make this worthwhile. I just don't see how they can pull that off.

But I guess I've given up, they've won, we lost, no more free content and I guess if I have to pay this is a better value for me than even Netflix is really.

Right now they still make enough from carriage fees that it's not worth it. I think loading it up with mostly a lot of relatively cheap niche stuff that fans of those things are really into is a pretty decent way to ease into it. Yeah I think that's pretty smart. The UFC deal just seems so out of whack that it feels like it'll just be an anchor on them financially.
