Most of Japan does look at weird anime the same way the west does, but One Piece was (is?) One of the most popular manga series in Japan, and has literally been the number one selling manga series for the past decade. I don't know about modern Japan enough to say exactly what their issues with LGBT issues are but I know the Japanese side of my family, until really recently, basically disowned anyone who wasn't straight after high school. Sword Art Online I recall was huge for a while then had a massive drop off in popularity or at least popular backlash after the first season. The female lead being sidelined isn't just misogynistic but lovely writing that pissed off most people who liked her, I presume. Those kind of jarring changes almost never go over well no matter what direction they're in. I think anime and manga in Japan is a bit like Star Wars or Marvel movies in America where a ton of people still look down on fans of it that cross some arbitrary line of investment despite it being super popular, and most of the fans are quite used to not caring what society thinks or even revelling in their outcast status. The case of anime is a bit weird since, as I may have said, back in the 90s and 00s (and still a bit now) it was the only game in town for queer representation in media, and down low super popular among teenage girls and young women who were still ignored or treated as vapid morons by mainstream Western media. A whole lot of their own culture and stereotypes grew up around young women who don't care about what they're 'supposed' to, which tends to be completely ignored because people enjoy assuming all nerds are pasty white straight males that are easy targets to mock. (And it can be just as bad when they DO notice; Young Justice got cancelled because too many teenage girls liked it, and Cartoon Network assumed they don't buy merchandise. Not that you'd have an easy time finding merchandise of it even at the height of its popularity)

But with Young Justice, I always assumed the cancellation was largely due to the show just NOT being as popular as CN would have liked. Teen Titans as INSANELY popular and YJ was tonally way different. It's sort of like then Ninja Turtles cartoon reboot of the early 00s. It seemed like everyone in that kid-teen demographic I heard talk about it HATED that series, despite it being darker and I think more in tune with the comics. They literally wanted the 80s/90s cartoon version, instead. It seemed like it was more the now adult 80s kids who liked the new reboot more. By that same token with Young Justice/Teen Titans. I knew people who were coming off of the JLU series HATED Titans on every single level. The designs, the personalities, the stories. They pretty much refused to watch Young Justice when it came out as a result of how much they disliked Titans and I had to tell at least a few of them it was probably better than the best JLU arcs. WIth the Teen Titans reboot some time later, I don't know if their opinions improved on that run or not just due to it being way more of a satire/parody than the original run.

I feel like Sword Art Online was supposed to be a full-on harem anime, but they never quite committed all the way to it since they needed Asuna and Kirito to be a couple for the plot to work.

My experience of Sword Art Online was the first episode was okay, I guess, the second episode hinted at a lot of really interesting stuff that could happen as a society rallies around trying to free themselves by beating this game, and then the third episode ignored all that for a maudlin as gently caress story about a bunch of friends dying horribly so our protagonist could feel more angst. Then the fourth episode involved some small girl in her underwear and that's when I checked out. Like it's hard to judge on 3 1/2 episodes but it seemed like they kept introducing possible plot ideas and then dropping them completely.

JediTalentAgent posted:But with Young Justice, I always assumed the cancellation was largely due to the show just NOT being as popular as CN would have liked. Teen Titans as INSANELY popular and YJ was tonally way different. Pretty sure one of the people working on the show apparently came out and said that CN's executives went 'Girls are watching this show? What are we supposed to sell, them, T-shirts? Cancel it, we have reality TV to run!' Cartoon Network also has a long, long history of loving over basically any show that they don't own, even though DC is owned by the same parent company; the last seasons of Teen Titans and JLU were absolutely hosed over in scheduling. (also related to the premature cancellation of Transformers Animated, which was at least hastily wrapped up, as Hasbro was sick of CN's poo poo and went off to start their own channel, with ponies and aquabats) While reboots generally always suffer backlash to some extent, especially when they contrast in tone. 00s turtles fans were pissed off at the 2012 CGI cartoon because it went back to being more goofy and like the 80s cartoon. Of course, it got a hell of a lot darker as it went along and attracted a lot of fans back, which is also a common pattern. And now it's probably happening all over again with Rise of the TMNT. Teen Titans was a bit of a weird case given it was part of the executive fuckery that the DCAU kept having to deal with; that along with The Batman meant that Justice League could no longer feature and barely acknowledge any of the characters involved in them, and vice versa. Hence why you get a Robin whose connection to Batman can barely be implied, while Batman's villains disappeared from the last seasons of Justice League. (Weirdly enough, The Batman eventually introduced the Justice League after JLU finished) And Teen Titans Go has had.. conflicting reception since it's full on comedy, and often takes the piss out of the original show (and also Young Justice, not long after its cancellations, which felt like rubbing salt in the wounds for a lot of people). That and Cartoon Network now devotes literally 90% of its schedule to reruns of Teen Titans Go, full on Nickelodeon 'The Spongebob Channel' mode. ...in short, the DC cartoons are a huge mess of conflicting reboots, continuities and legal clusterfucks that frequently pit fans against each other, especially a shame because a lot of those shows were genuinely good. Young Justice actually did a decent job at bridging the thematic gap between Teen Titans and Justice League for a lot of people, though I feel it has its own flaws.

It's one of those things where everyone remembers the fandom wars and no one remembers the people who happily enjoyed both. Though Teen Titans in particular did attract a fair few fans with only a cursory familiarity with DC stuff; hell, when first watching it I kept forgetting that Robin was meant to have been Batman's sidekick. Well, recently I think it was Tara Strong who tweeted that CN was considering going back and making a "season 6" of the original Teen Titans cartoon, which would air at the same time as TTG. I'm pretty sure that mid credits thing was an allusion to that. And yeah, count me as the small demographic that liked both Teen Titans series. TTG is actively silly, and the movie is great, especially for the ungodly number of DC in-jokes throughout it (seriously, the easter eggs number in the hundreds). And yes, they commit vehicular homicide during a musical number. On a neon tiger voiced by Michael Bolton. Regarding the whole thing towards the end of JLU/OG TT not being able to cross contaminate characters, I loved how it basically became a "DC Arms Race" for the two series to see who could claim which characters first. Like, that was my favorite part of watching after a while.

The sort of faux-anime style doesn't really appeal to me as much as it used to after DC started using it for all their animated projects. I guess Aqualad was pretty cool in it.

TTG is great because they'll do stuff like give kids step by step instructions as to how they can become a slumlord. Or like how the most recent episode has them trying to rebuild Titans Tower after the events of the movie and ends with them bribing the city building inspector so they can rebuild without having to keep it to code.

I think someone said Cartoon Network was pretty big on having an rough estimate on when they wanted shows to end, even if they were popular. They only wanted the number they needed to keep it around and random repeats. I'm not sure if this was still in the midst of the Cartooon Network anime blocks, though. CN really spent a lot of prime airtime around 2000-2010(?) putting a lot of anime out on the channel, which all things considered was probably a lot cheaper and easier for them to do and they could easily keep scaling the content with the target audience until the AS blocks would start up at night. I honestly don't even know if anime is still a 'big' thing on the main CN channel, anymore, because I don't have cable. When I flip through it on a break at work it's always some cartoony modern Western animation on the channel. To keep using anime references, it's like those short little SD comedy segments they'd throw into the end of an episode that just there for a laugh. I know this is probably a big derail, too, but I'm the only person on the planet who thinks the Loonatics original design outrage was overblown and wrong, and I think the redesigns they made to make people happy were actually WORSE and more disturbing. As mentioned, CN hasn't been kind to shows they don't own, and pretty much phased out anime almost completely. They were only giving Pokemon absolutely token Saturday morning airings of new episodes until they unsurprisingly lost the license. Short version, there was a big period in the late 00s where they tried to pivot to cheap reality TV like the rest of cable, and cancelled most of their expensive shows and alienated a lot of talent in the process, and when the reality TV was a worse failure than the time they broadcast hockey games for some reason, they floundered around for a fair bit until they got Adventure Time and Regular Show. (after treating Johnny Test the way they treat TTGo now)

The Duck Dodgers show was incredible, though. Fans get pissed about changes of cartoons, video games, etc etc a lot and people make fun of them or call for their deaths a lot over it but you're going to find yourself reacting exactly the same way when something you care about is changed massively for no reason when there's a long, long history of said changes being almost entirely for the worse. For every improved and elevating reboot there's been half a dozen lovely spinoffs, sequels and adaptations that make changes for no apparent reason but to make the story worse. (Note: This is a long rant on my part, and I'm apologizing now because I know it has no place this thread...) Neither was I, but once I looked at the before and after, I think they made horrible mistake in the long run if they were going to do it anyway. I also think that original outrage was accepted way too easily by the studio, and I think the internet anger of it was way out of proportion. Loonatics was ever going to 'replace' the original characters/cartoons, but people acted like it was. It'd never be more than a one or two season thing, but I could see it as this really stylized, abstract, sci-fi superhero Tron thing with those original designs and probably in 2018 that whole gimmick would be better received. Its look is not that far removed from the extremes and stylization that the current Thundercats and She-Ra reboots have gone from the originals (that people are somehow pissed off about, too.) I think despite the way they were designed, if you remove the 'evil' look from them in that original promo image, that design is incredibly malleable. You could put that characters in that design through all sorts of classic cartoony antics, stories, physics and expression way more easily. The one they went with, not so much. But that mistake was on them, I think. IF they'd released with that same design with more varied expressions on each character, with each character having a different expression to show some sign of individual personality or rage of emotions the design could express, I think the reaction would have been better, even if not wholly positive. Also, I don't know much of the original show had changed to accommodate the new designs.
