We've got this deceptively fierce looking doofus hanging around the front steps of the house today. Seems to think that if he/she stomps around on top of a hedge for a while, sparrows will miraculously appear and just climb into his/her beak.

It did not  Bird is a juvenile sparrowhawk, a species noted for its skill at making surprise attacks from camouflaged positions. Babby's mother regularly hunts and kills doves in our garden - they almost never see her coming. She flew past my head once, just an inch or two away and all I saw was a brown blur. Last year's baby was just as funny when it was learning how to hunt - it thought that it could reasonably stand openly on top of a building and pounce at a flock of starlings that was watching it and making rude remarks from a bramble thicket nearby.
