My opinion is that the current arc has (had?) some pacing issues and the "filler" episode wasn't that good but it wasn't bad either, but any arc would suffer from having to follow All For One's fight.

If you dislike an episode of a show that you otherwise enjoy it's filler. Thems the rules.

Anyway the arc the MHA anime is currently adapting what i'd consider the series worst arc, but hey it just finished adapting the best arc so I think Season 3 is still probably ok all in all.

Phimose Knight

Yeah Season 3 itself is really good, but the provisional license exams could've easily been shortened down to "okay it's a written test of despair, and then you punch an instructor in the face"

like yeah, that's boring, sure. the actual material is long, tedious, further padded in the anime AND it's still boring, because there aren't any stakes, just stock battle shonen stuff (unlike the previous arc, which is stock battle shonen stuff, with stakes, and things you care about. no one is sweating bullets because they're worried Alien Queen won't get her driver's license.).

I believe in Beato.
Even when she's driving.
At night.
In a snowstorm.
Well.

As it turns out, since I gave up caffeine at the start of this year to help my blood pressure, having an over-sugared tall iced tea like I did yesterday does not put a bit more spring in my step for the day. It turns me into raging psycho guy. I think that's what happened earlier this year, when I also lost my mind here, when I had a soda. So much for just a nice summer treat.

I haven't read anything since that last post that didn't even make sense to me as I was typing it. I crashed hard after that; I'll assume I was torn to shreds as I probably deserve. Frankly I'm too loving embarrassed to read any of it at this point.

This is not the place to work out my poo poo, though, and so I'm going to take a long, long, maybe permanent break from posting anything here. I thought everyone deserved an explanation, although if you think it's bullshit I wouldn't blame you. Only because it happened twice here did I, maybe, figure out what the gently caress happened.

Anyway, thanks for all the anime and manga recommendations over the years.

The current MHA arc is weak as hell and I hope it ends soon. The anime's pacing clearly hasn't helped it, but the material itself has just seemed really really clumsy and uneven. The first half of this season had some great stuff in it so the more recent stuff has been pretty disappointing, and I hope we get more Good MHA soon.

Hanebado is completely insane and I'm actually enjoying it even more as it drives its drama further into absurdity. It's so deadpan and deathly serious about it all that the ridiculousness rolls back around to bewildered amusement. I expect it to have started banishing failed badminton players to the shadow realm by the end of the season.

Planet With has been losing me a bit with the extended combat sequences. I love the show when it's more down-to-earth and character-focused, but people flying around in battle suits doing acrobatics and transforming into different things just leaves me bored and unfulfilled.

Encouragement of Climb is the most consistently charming show and always puts a smile on my face. More people should watch it, it's lovely. Aoi and Hinata have such a great dynamic together.

I still really want to like Banana Fish, but it's starting to seriously frustrate me with all the cheap shock-value deaths and how Ash's backstory continually gets further piled on with even more excessive tragedy every week. I'm not sure if I'm going to be finishing it. I want more gays and less suffering, please.

Harukana Receive is good and also gay. It hasn't been blowing me away but it's a good time.

I'm way behind on Revue Starlight and Lupin III and I want to catch up on them both.

I think the current MHA arc really suffered from its extra anime-only episode; the arc in the manga was perfectly fine but in the anime it seems to be taking a whole hell of a long time to wrap up.

e: I haven't watched Banana Fish yet but from what I know about the manga (mostly plot summary & the ending) and also that it's about gay people and was written in the 80s it's tragedy all the way down so I'd kinda expect it to be a downer. That's a big reason why I haven't gotten started on it yet.

Yeah, I think I agree with that.

The manga, you were getting pretty cool moments every chapter and moving on. Everybody but Deku got, like, a page or two at most. The show adding filler means that the test is outstaying its welcome a bit.

Spiritus Nox

I'm not way down on the show or anything but yeah, the provisional exam IS overstaying its welcome a bit. I appreciate wanting to give the B-listers some good scenes, but the ratio of time spent to cool poo poo happening isn't quite right.

Read Banana Fish!!!
None of the deaths in it felt like cheap shock value but I'm not watching the 'me and maybe the pacing is rough on it, depending on how much they're trying to fit in 12 eps. It's a looong manga.

I like the halfassed modernization of the Banana Fish anime, where someone will stop mid-scene to point at their phone and say "there's no info about it on the internet" and then the scene continues normally

DisDisDis

There's definitely a dearth of anime about the good and gay boys being happy together but there are a million manga like that and I'm glad Banana Fish is an action adventure spanning a bunch of different cool subplots that was ripping on the US government and Iran Contra almost as it was happening instead of another one of those. Obviously no one has to like it just for being unique but it's a pretty rare thing. I definitely wouldn't describe it as 'tragic because pre 2000s gay' like Burrito implied, either in the bad way or the epic Ikeda Riyoko way.
Anyway if you see the germ of something you like but don't want all the murder and US senate pedophilia might I recommend Yoshida Akimi's other manga about probably bisexual delinquent teenagers.
