Part 12: Return of Snagem

Pokespot

Oh neat here's Bonsly.

Now remember, nice and slowly.

Alright, we've finally captured it. After all, the start of this update will be doing everything to do with Pokespots, so best get this out of the way first.

ONBS

We sincerely appreciate what you've done for us. My granddaughter and BONSLY are overjoyed. See for yourself.

Yay! Thank you! I believed in you!

This is something that stands for our gratitude. Please accept it.

It's an event that's not open to everyone, oh no. The receptionist will know what to do if you flash that CARD at the registration counter. I'm sure you'll enjoy battling with BONSLY. Thank you again. We must be leaving now.

Seeing them, it brought a lump to my throat. Thanks for finding that POKEMON!

DAVID, we made the right decision in asking for your help. I'm amazed though... that POKEMON really was something we'd never seen before. The world is still a vast mystery!

Alright, now to dump a load of Poke Snacks at the various Pokespots and then wait around a while for Pokemon to appear. Or, well, use an AR code to increase the chance of a Pokemon appearing at a Pokespot so I'm not here for a million years.

Get pretty lucky by finding the rarest Cave Pokemon first. We already have Gligar and Trapinch (well, now Meditite) from the Rock Spot, so we only need to catch the 7 others. Well, 6. And because they're low level and I don't have to really do this, I'll just hack in some Master Balls to instantly catch them. See, I knew you wouldn't mind.

Didn't take long to get a nice collection going. Now a Pokemon appearing isn't based on step count, it's just when the Pokemon feels like turning up. So just go do other stuff while you wait. I was doing side stuff at the Realgam Tower, as well as purifying some Pokemon. I've purified quite a few now, so the Purify Chamber is getting pretty full, which means I purify more Pokemon quicker and then the Chamber gets even more full and, well, you can see how easy it is to get it rolling now that we have.

If I had to give an example, it'd be about as incredible as my hobby of sleeping while wearing my PLUSLE costume. Whoops! That's off the record! Pretend you never heard that, okay? It's not like I said anything like, "PLUSLE is so sweetly adorable."

You might forget that Silva is even in this game. Might be better to keep it that way.

That's two rare Pokemon. Now we've only got three Pokemon left to catch.

Hey this is pretty good. I was starting to consider using AR codes to modify what Pokemon appeared at Poke Spots (which of course I'll be using in the future), but the game decided to be nice to me.

Sure I'm bouncing around a lot so far, but that's what I want to do.

And there we go, that's all the rare Pokemon, now we can just ignore Duking for the rest of the game, which seems like a small crime, but oh well. Oh wait, we're still missing one Pokemon.

There we go, that's every Pokemon from Pokespots. Well, there's one more thing we can do, so we'll leave the Poke Snacks around while we do other things.

Like purifying Togepi! Yep, I was walking around that much since I spent around 30 mins going around doing side mode stuff and purifying. In fact, because of how full the Purify Chamber is, it was pretty easy to, uh, purify every Pokemon we've encountered so far. It is pretty drat easy when it gets going.

You've finished its purification! Oh, thank you! I'm so glad you're back to normal, TOGEPI! Now, may I have my TOGEPI back?

Great, our trade's done. Please treat my ELEKID with kindness, the way you did with my TOGEPI. Even though that ELEKID is cute, it doesn't measure up against my TOGEPI at all. Thank you so much for purifying it!

I think this is a much better deal. It's in your best interest to return Togepi as you get a GREAT Pokemon in return, with excellent coverage, good stats upon evolution and bonus exp from being a trade! Oh, uh, I should be saying all that stuff in its analysis, but this is a pretty interesting trade regardless. Even if you evolve Togepi into Togetic, you'll still get this excellent Elekid, but if you wait until postgame and trade a regular Togepi or Togetic over, you'll still trade for Elekid, but it'll have the stand moveset of Quick Attack, Leer, Thunderpunch and Light Screen.

Elekid, Trade, starting moves: Thunderpunch, Ice Punch, Fire Punch, Cross Chop

Compared to Togepi, this Elekid seems a bit unfair, considering it gets some amazing starting moves to use right away. If I wasn't using Pineapple, I would probably add this to my team. Of course, just Ice Punch is enough for coverage, Cross Chop makes Fire Punch a bit unnecessary and you'll be replacing Thunderpunch with Thunnderbolt soon enough. With the bonus exp, it'll become an Electabuzz pretty quickly and then you'll have a speedy mixed attacker that has great coverage. You'll be relying on TMs for the most part, since it doesn't learn much in levels for a while, so you can also give it Iron Tail, Thunder Wave or even Psychic if you want, since it learns some weird moves. But you've got a good starting base, so this mon will do you just fine. Cross Chop could use some PP Ups though.

Okay, before we continue the plot or whatever, we need to put in another AR code to boost the chance of this happening.

I take my eyes off you one second, and off you run like this! Oh, no, no! You ate those POKE SNACKS, didn't you? Oh, you naughty child! Haven't I told you harshly enough to never touch what doesn't belong to you? Oh, you little glutton! The POKE SNACKS that were here... were they yours? I am so sorry! I'll replace all the POKE SNACKS you've lost.

And so, I've been traveling all over, collecting ingrediants for my trade. I am terribly sorry to have caused you trouble. I will talk sense into this glutton, so please accept my apology. Here! You apologize, too!

Every time you get a notification from the Spot Monitor, there's a 10% chance it's actually Munchlax. You'll get 10 Poke Snacks and a random herb as a reward, but thankfully this isn't the only way to get those items.

Uh, hi, excuse me? Sometimes when you come up here Munchlax just spawns at the top of the stairs preventing you from continuing. It's weird.

Anyway, from seeing that event, we can now buy herbs again. Bit annoying it's locked behind a rare chance, but at least we've got it now. Both it and the Bonsly event are completely optional, so you could go through the whole game without even knowing about them, which is a bit cruel to that girl and her grandpa.

Alright, let's finally head out to the Snagem Hideout. We're done with Poke Spot stuff now, but of course we'll be using it later.

Snagem Hideout

Oh I guess we can do that too. We'll actually save this colosseum for later, since we do not need our current team getting a bunch more levels.

Alright we're back here again. And of course there's a load of Snagem guys to fight again.

Well darn, dril's already caught up with everyone. Guess we should use our team more.

Pictured: me trying to remember how Mirror Move works. dril's moveset is still bad enough that I'm willing to try other stuff for the heck of it.

You know what you're doing with your POKEMON. I hate to admit it, but you've wiped me out. We could use your toughness. Come, join TEAM SNAGEM! We're always on the lookout for outstanding talent!

Might need that healing machine later, this is a pretty big place. If you're thinking that Agrev sounds familiar, he is! Three Snagem Grunts from last game return in this one and he's one of them. You remember him, right? Well he didn't talk when we first met him outside Phenac Colosseum last game, but we fought him in the postgame. He had a Shadow Ursaring. But he looks a little different this time around. For whatever reason, his and Wakin's model was swapped, if you thought you recognised Wakin's name but not his model. We have no idea why GS did that, but they might've forgotten which Snagem grunt was which too.

Greetings.

Ah poo poo, we'll have to fight mister hyper offense again.

We'll head straight to where Gonzap is, we need our Snag Machine back asap. You remember where it is, right? We did come here quite a few times last game. Also here's the Psychic TM. No one on our team can use it.

You should definitely remember Biden, he had the Shadow Smeargle, as well as the guy who just lost to Zook. Dunno why, his team has quite a few evolved Pokemon on it, so the trainers are getting kinda tough! His model is the same at least, so they got that right!

I get it now! You were on the S.S. LIBRA when I went to get the SNAG MACHINE! Okay, I get it now. I won't have to agonize over this! You're the kid from back there. I got it now.

Alright, dril is now fully integrated into the team. Hopefully that neutered the overlevelling somewhat.

Gonzap's Theme (Again, it's mislabelled, gah)

It's too honking small! How am I supposed to fit this on my arm?

But, uh... it's not because the MACHINE's small, it's because your arm is so thick, GONZAP...

Shut your yap! Bring me something so useless as this... huh? Who is that kid there?

Hey! You! You're that kid! He must've come for the SNAG MACHINE! Good work getting out here. But, we're not about to let you have it back. Give up now, kid!

Okay he's fighting us in a normal battle, this should be a piece of piss.

Still, these Snagem battles are a bit tough since they have around four to five Pokemon each and they're somewhat approaching our level.

Before the model swap, Wakin was simply the grunt we fought outside Phenac Colosseum. That's it, he isn't seen again for the rest of the game, so having him turn up as Gonzap's right hand is a bit weird. GS probably just forgot and this was meant to be Agrev's role, since he was ordered by Gonzap to lure you to the Snagem Hideout last game, so it makes more sense.

If we snag all the SHADOW POKEMON from them using this SNAG MACHINE, CIPHER will collapse. When that happens, TEAM SNAGEM will step up and take over! So, how about it? Will you join us? Hm? Gwahahaha! Don't lie, because you're obviously no good at it! Your lips are twitching! All you really want to do is get this SNAG MACHINE back, don't you? Fine! You'll have your SNAG MACHINE back, but only if you can beat me!

Gonzap Battle

Like before Gonzap is a bit tough since he likes attacking. But his team is a LOT weaker than before, even if they all love that Hyper Beam.

Despite dril being out, his Electrode just goes after Pineapple instead. rear end in a top hat.

His team is a little bit weak to Flying, but I'm glad I don't have to deal with Vileplume.

Ah here comes the Hyper Beam spam. At least Electrode won't be doing much with it and its recharging turn makes it a sitting duck.

Cool fact, despite this move's ubiquitousness, Skarmory can't learn Hyper Beam. Also since we snagged his last one, I guess he got another one.

Got a little dangerous towards the end, but really not that bad a fight.

Snagem Hideout

Hah? Are you serious, GONZAP? After all the trouble we went through to get it? Weren't we going to use that to teach CIPHER a lesson for dumping us?

This kid's fighting to bring CIPHER down, right? Him and us, we're both after the same thing. Here, kid, take it. You can have your SNAG MACHINE back.

Oh thank god, these past two updates have been miserable. I actually really hate sidequest stuff, so these constant 100% LPs have been hell. But hey, witch's curse, what you gonna do?

This is a gift from me. There's a chest in a corner on the ground floor. That's the KEY for it. All right, kid. Get going! CIPHER's secret factory is to the north. We'll all be looking forward to your crushing CIPHER! That's when TEAM SNAGEM will again be in control! Gwahahaha!

You'd better appreciate GONZAP's generosity. You repay him by sticking it to CIPHER! We should be the only gang in ORRE. There's no room for two!

Ah it's good to have the Snag Machine back. Now we'll team up with Snagem to take down Cipher! But before that, there's a bit more of this place to explore after all.

Let's see what else we can find here upstairs.

Depending on your qualifications, you can even recieve up to 20% more paid holidays! You won't find terms this good... huh? Why, you... you can't butt into a job interview! This is what you'll get!

Due to the evolved nature of our opponents, we're not knocking them out in one hit with neutral STAB attacks, which makes for a nice change.

Hopefully our opponents can keep up, since we're still getting a few levels here and there.

Nope, no way! I'm not letting anyone together than me join TEAM SNAGEM!

I came out because they promised to pay me the day's wages and buy my lunch. What is this place all about, anyway?

Sorry, the boss already said no.

Hotdog is still pretty fragile, nearly getting OHKOed by a Vital Throw.

Mmm, Fighting fodder.

Never had a good track record with that, eh?

It can't be helped because we haven't made much money lately. This just stinks... huh?! While I was feeling sorry for myself, an intruder appeared!

Bad dog, just learn Crunch already.

What's more impressive is the stand is still there. No one's moved it after all this time???

I haven't snagged anything in nearly two updates, I'm getting the shakes.

dril is doing pretty well, even if he only has Aerial Ace for damage.

Oh now this is a nice reward.

Only Hotdog can really use it, but his Attack is pretty good, so it's some nice neutral coverage against special walls. We're pretty much done here, so now we've got some real important things to take care of.

Cipher Key Lair

And what's with showing off that weird machine on your arm? You're begging for a thumping, and I'll deliver it this time! I'll bash, thrash, and even crash you, just like you want!

The only notable thing about Zook's team is Zangoose, since it's identical to when we fought him last update. Having a Relicanth is pretty cool at least. I only showed off his team since he's a unique character we see a few times.

Zangoose, 90 catch rate (78%, low health, paralyzed, Great Ball), starting moves: Shadow Rush/Brick Break, Shadow Mist/Refresh, Counter, Crush Claw

While it's not fighting against Seviper, Zangoose is pretty good against other Pokemon as well. Sure, it's a Normal type without Return, but from the reminder it gets Slash, which can do something similar when it crits. Getting a free Brick Break is very nice and we just got Shadow Ball, so already this mon has fantastic coverage. It's a shame it can't really use any special moves it of course learns hundreds of, nor can take strong hits, but you can leave its moves as is and give it Protect, or give it something else, like Aerial Ace, Iron Tail or Thunder Wave. If it doesn't knock out the opponent, then you're in trouble, but it can do a lot of damage and can't get poisoned!

...I should go away. Somewhere far away where CIPHER won't have any influence. So long, punk. I've had enough battling you to last a lifetime.

Alright, the way is clear, let's take this place down!

No, no. Can't let you in, nope. You run along now! Huh? Wait a minute. That weird machine on your left arm... you look sort of like that kid I saw on TV, but maybe not. Hey, kid, were you ever on TV? W-what? The kid taking the fight to CIPHER is you? Well, what an opportunity! I'll knock you out and earn myself a promotion to ADMIN!

What?! Don't make me laugh!

Hey, kid. You let us handle things here. It wouldn't pay to make a racket. All it'd do is alert the guys inside the building. Hey, WAKIN!

Yo!

Hey! You guys are from TEAM SNAGEM! What do you think you're doing here?

GLOOM! Hit them with SLEEP POWDER!

Heheh! Glad to be of service!

Now's our chance! Hurry! We can wreck CIPHER right now! Come on, move it!

Heheh! GLOOM's some kind of useful, hey?

Alright, we'll be taking down this facility next update... but we've still got some time to explore it in this one! There's some very important things we need to get after all.

Does look very fancy. How long did it take to build this place? And how did they keep it so secret?

Of course there's a lot of Cipher goons hiding in the ceiling, so let's get to battling.

Well we're off to a great start. Like the Snagem goons, Cipher peeps are also using four to five Pokemon each, so this place is gonna be a bit long.

I don't have the heart to tell him I throw these away instantly.

Block puuuuushiiiiiiing!!!

Well wasn't that a neat dead end.

Back on the first floor, let's go down to the basement.

Ah come on, my fire dog is right there!

We're under orders to take a full shipload of POKEMON and turn them into SHADOW POKEMON. But we'll be done with this job soon. Then, I'm going to take a good long bath to unwind!

Excellent timing, Shock Wave was becoming a bit meh.

This game is never going to be difficult... our team is just too good!

Sorry for bugging you.

Of course there's a fair few Shadow Pokemon that we can finally go over again! Alright, we'll go over Paras is just a-

...whaaaaaaaaat? This guy has TWO Shadow Pokemon? Is that even possible???

Well it's not a big deal, Net Balls make it as if I didn't even need to catch them.

Paras, 190 catch rate (100%, low health, Net Ball), starting moves: Shadow Blitz/Spore, Shadow Shed/Refresh, Slash, False Swipe

Uh, I think they want you to catch Pokemon with this one, due to its PERFECT moveset for that. You want to use it for something else? Ah, hmm, uhh that might not be the best idea, due to its lack of Bug STAB and its best attack being Body Slam. No Sludge Bomb or Return sucks, it doesn't really have the SpAtk to use its Grass STAB and its best coverage move is... Aerial Ace. Still, Spore is an excellent move regardless, Slash is nice and you can remember Stun Spore or Double-Edge to give it some options. They could've given it something nice, but decided to double down on its excellent catching abilities. Meaning it really has to scramble to do something else. I think I chose the right mushroom, alas.

Growlithe, 190 catch rate (78%, low health, Nest Ball), starting moves: Shadow Blitz/Flamethrower, Shadow Wave/Charm, Bite, Take Down

Finally we can catch Pokemon in Nest Balls. Uh, barely. Anyway, Growlithe is of course a good boy, but by how much? Well, a free Flamethrower is nice, saves it relying on Flame Wheel and you can evolve it immediately, unless you want to wait and get Helping Hand. It'd be an alright mixed attacker, it just doesn't have too many moves to work with Aerial Ace, Iron Tail and Body Slam as its only options and Bite will be its only other special move. Extemespeed will be nice in the postgame, but despite being a very good boy, it doesn't really do a whole lot, though it will deal a lot of damage in the sun. It'll probably need Protect since it's not amazingly bulky and it'll be fine, just not exactly impressive. Shame too, cause it is a very good boy.

So yeah, multiple Shadow Pokemon at once. Sounds like fun, you can probably imagine where it might end up.

Three ways to push that box, joy.

Gone in a flash cause of Net Balls, but it's our fifth team member!

Thunderbolt is a pretty nice upgrade, but we're getting too strong again!

Shellder, 190 catch rate (100%, low health, Net Ball), starting moves: Shadow Blitz/Take Down, Shadow Shed/Refresh, Surf, Aurora Beam

If you're looking for the claaaaaaaamps, then you're in the right place, Shellder is pretty basic as a Water type, but that's perfectly fine, it's a good type. Since it gets Surf, it's very useful and an Ice STAB when it evolves is just great. And then that's it. It doesn't do anything else, aside from Normal moves. But really, as a Water/Ice type it doesn't need to do anything else, it's perfectly fine as it is. It can evolve straight away and you might even learn Spikes at level 33. Otherwise it's whatever, Take Down or Double-Edge are your best bets without Return and it can even blow up if you wanted. It just does what it needs to and sometimes that's all you want. Its gigantic Defense ain't bad either, there's a lot of Earthquake (eventually) going around.

We'll go back and pick up Shellder in just a moment, but while we're here...

Some idiot with Grass types is in my way.

Super fuckin neato

Let's grab our newest team member and take down a factory with them. It'll be a nice bonding exercise.

And to think, if things had gone a bit differently, that Shellder could have been Zook's signature pokemon.

Looks like you haven't run into Spy Targ yet. Trainers having more than one shadow pokemon was never exactly a secret, though it does change the capture mechanics slightly - you no longer keep snagged pokemon if you manage to lose after capturing one. With Zook's Shellder and Targ's pair, that makes three snaggable pokemon in the demo.

Food names as a no? For a clam? Hmm... suppose I'll have to get creative, then. It's Tough physically... Decently strong... not very good at taking Special hits... And the slowest member of the team! Evidently, we need to name it after someone like that! Thus, I propose the name Arden.

Side Course 7: Battle Bingo 2

Battle Bingo

Welcome back to some more Bingo. Here are the three Expert cards. We're starting with quite a good one.

Since we have a Magikarp, we need to pretty quickly make that not the case. We'll use it to catch Cacturne and then get the Master Ball and, well, that's what it'll do for the entire card. So we're basically using three Pokemon.

With three pretty strong Pokemon, this'll be a piece of cake. Note the Gengar having Psychic as its move, its the third Pokemon overall we've encountered that doesn't have a STAB move (Focus Punch Cubone from Card 2 and Hyper Beam Aerodactyl from Card 6 if you noticed), making it a little trickier in finding out how useful a Pokemon might be. It's something to look out for more and more as the cards get tougher.

So it's simply a matter of matching super effective damage, which is pretty easy when you have some hard hitters with those moves.

And Gengar cleans from there. Magikarp who?

That's a pretty nice reward for not a lot of work. These cards aren't particularly tricky due to the high damage being thrown around everywhere, so minimizing RNG is pretty easy for the most part.

Wet. Golduck has Brick Break, so it's pretty fuckin rubbish, so we need to replace it asap. The problem with these later cards is, well, everything is pretty good, so who do you actually pick to catch? Well, the ones that line up quite nicely and give you the most damage out of all of them so you don't need to fight them. Simple really... when you know what's under every panel...

Starmie is such an obvious pick and even Golduck will pull its weight so long as it's up against the right Pokemon.

When you have Ludicolo, there's no way you can lose.

Though it will run out of EP eventually, so we need a second super effective opinion. But again, pretty darn easy.

The final card pulls out all the stops, with all kinds of Pokemon and all kinds of moves. This Scyther has an Eviolite... right?

We'll need a nice strong Pokemon to help us along, though Scyther has Aerial Ace, so it's not completely useless.

That Gyarados is pretty drat sneaky, so we need Golem to take care of it.

Our last Pokemon is, well, Quagsire again, but it's really good so I don't mind!

Alright, we should be good to end this nice and smoothly.

Oh no you don't, not when I'm so close to the end!

Alright, that's all the cards complete.

Bar one. Of course it's not over just yet.

Houndoom can almost solo this card, but it'll need some help getting past some of the tough customers.

Of course we've got to go for one of the best Pokemon on this card. No, seriously, Chimecho is actually super helpful, even though it only has 50 Atk.

Gotta get them eggs also, just too good to pass up.

The bottom row can be particularly deadly for Houndoom, so it needs a little help from its friends.

Though once you get past this point...

Houndoom can absolutely destroy everything. And yes, you can finish the last card with only 3 Pokemon. The guy from Gamefaqs that I got all of these strategies from and copied verbatim is a genius. Probably.

That is a NICE chunk of change for not spending too long doing stuff. Like this is more coupons we'll get from climbing Mt. Battle, which shows just how rubbish that place is. Though it's the quickest place to grind them, I suppose.

Congratulations! At your next visit, we will offer a new game mode to add to the fun of BATTLE MODE. Named the 1-PANEL MODE, this game mode makes it much more difficult to choose PANELS for flipping. We hope you will give it a try!

Well I'm incredibly uninterested in this new mode, but we do have one final card to clear. It's weird you have to Use it while at the desk instead of just talking to her, but whatever.

I've only heard rumors about it myself. This is the first time I've seen this CARD! Should I register this CARD so that you may play it here? Thank you so much! I will register this CARD right away!

The difficulty gets lowered for this card, but it's just a cute little bonus that lets you use a Bonsly FOURTEEN MONTHS before its game came out. How's that for content? Man a two year gap between main games is always rough...

Oh yeah I guess I should go over 1-Panel mode. It makes the game harder, but increases the Poke Coupon payout. The tiles are shuffled before you start, so you have no idea where things for the most part and you can only flip tiles adjacent to you, failing if you hit a dead end. It's, uh, really not worth it. These are hard enough to do blind, so adding poo poo on top of that is annoying. However, if you instantly retry a card, the tiles don't get shuffled again, so you can keep retrying until you know where everything is and work from there. There's no reward for beating all the cards in this mode (probably, has anyone actually done it?), so just move on, and leave this minigame short and sweet.

Hey it's a Bonsly. We'll see what it does in a moment, but we need some friends first.

Alright, that should do us for the moment.

But yep, Bonsly is perfectly usable, coming with Rock Slide and the same stats it has in Gen 4. Though of course you can't use it outside this mode. You can't.

We'll be saving this for later. For now, there's not much since the card is a step down from what we've just been doing. But you don't need to beat any other cards to access this anyway.

While it has poo poo SpDef, it can still take a few hits.

Alright, let's get to clearing this card!

Oh wait this crit means we lose. Love this feature. The Expert cards were nice and smooth, but the Regular cards were pretty fuckin mean.

And that was the Bonsly card. What fun, I guess.

That's the best reward we'll get from this mode, all that's left is Poke Coupons for retrying. And to be fair, we've accrued quite a bit, since I've also gone up to Area 4 in Mt. Battle by this point. And there's still plenty more to obtain. But the real reward?

Was the friends we made along the way. Battle Bingo is... alright. If I didn't have a step by step plan of what to do then I would conclude that this mode is random garbage you can't possibly strategise about in any way. So don't do this mode blind, cause it's pretty loving awful if you do. When you do know everything... it's kinda boring. There's no middle ground for this mode and that's the worst part of it, I was just going through the motions. Oh well, at least we have Voltorb Flip.

Part 13: Key Developments

Here's our new team member. He's neat, but of course we need to get that gauge down, so to the front of the party it goes. It'll also need some slight recovery to stick around a bit more, though that's not a big deal to start with.

Cipher Key Lair

Let's continue on with more box pushing yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

Thankfully since Pokemon is an RPG for babies, its overworld "puzzles" aren't very difficult, which makes it easier for someone making screenshots of said "puzzles".

Pushing boxes onto switches to open doors is the easy part, now there's a trainer too? What difficulty!

Ah, letting the Shadow Pokemon do what they want while you draw all the fire. Nice, nice. Though Pokeballs thankfully ignore Follow Me since they go before it.

Are you starting to see a pattern yet?

Beedrill, 45 catch rate (78%, low health, paralyzed, Net Ball), starting moves: Shadow Blitz/Sludge Bomb, Shadow Hold/Baton Pass, Twineedle, Swords Dance

Ah the classic early game bug here in the late game to be... useful??? Surprising none of you that actually looked at its moves, Beedrill is... good in this game. Only because they felt generous and gave it Sludge Bomb AND Swords Dance. Lucky little poo poo. It even gets mediocre Bug STAB in Twineedle, but it's not the worst Bug move and if you get up a Swords Dance it'll do some damage, since it has alright Attack as well. Like, I'm using a Fearow, you can use some subpar stuff, since the game is giving you some subpar options with tools to work through that. Once you give it Brick Break you're done, it can boost away and attack away. It could use Protect since it's a fragile bee, but frankly, you're not gonna get a better dealt Beedrill hand than this.

Pidgeotto, 120 catch rate (78%, low health, Ultra Ball), starting moves: Shadow Blitz/Wing Attack, Shadow Panic/Refresh, Steel Wing, Featherdance

No Drill Peck? Pass. But seriously, out of the various birds we've encountered so far, Pidgeotto is as basic as they get. Thannkfully they gave it Steel Wing, but Return is still postgame, so you've got Wing Attack, Steel Wing, Double-Edge and... Thief? Man I am sick of having that move crop up as a vaguely serious option because THEY DON'T GET ANYTHING ELSE AHHHHHHHH. Sure, Fearow ain't exactly singing much either, but at least it hits harder and faster. If you want your basic birb to be more well rounded, then this is the mon for you, but that's its problem, it's just pretty mehhhhhhhhh and we've got plenty more of those to come, so if it can't stand out much, then there's not much reason to use it. Still, it's fine, it just doesn't really do anything much. And you know what, that's okay, cause that's what it does best.

We must be getting to the top if we're reaching the offices.

Oh? This should be interesting.

N-Never mind. Smeargle are so confusing sometimes...

We've had some nice items from Roosevelt, especially after it got some training on Death Mountain.

We have a... common ancestor.

Ooh more stuff to sell. I guess if I used all of the freebies it'd matter, but I really want lots of Revival Herbs...

Even now Shellder gives no shits about physical moves, which is just fantastic.

You know, you'll see more Chimecho in these games than you'll see in all the other games combined. And that's terrible.

Maybe these guys could be a bit more spaced out, going five steps into another unavoidable battle gives me Gen 1 flashbacks.

Downside is Shellder takes quite a bit of damage from even weak Fire attacks. Stats man.

Still, having Surf is always nice, even if it's not doing a lot due to spread damage.

Now that's a shame. On both counts.

Tangela, 45 catch rate (50%, low health, paralyzed, Ultra Ball), starting moves: Shadow Rave/Solarbeam, Shadow Hold/Morning Sun, Sunny Day, Ingrain

Oh hey have you used one of these without evolving it? Well you could, its stats are actually quite nice and in a double games, weather is definitely a more viable strategy, as we've seen. The game definitely wants you to just sit in the sun soaking up health and then blasting foes here and there, but it's a lot easier with a Heat Rock. However, that's all it really does, though it does get all the powder moves. If you want any kind of coverage move that doesn't use its rubbish Attack then you'll be relying on Hidden Power, which is never a good sign. At least Sludge Bomb is postgame so you won't get sad when you use it. It does its one thing quite well, but if you need it to do literally anything else, then boy are you in for a surprise. The surprise is awful Pokemon movepools that still somehow persist to this day.

Butterfree, 45 catch rate (78%, low health, paralyzed, Net Ball), starting moves: Shadow Rush/Psychic, Shadow Mist/Morning Sun, Sleep Powder, Aerial Ace

Well if one of the bugs is weirdly good, then the other one is going to be bad, can't spread too much goodwill around after all, don't want too much fun! Yeah Butterfree ain't that great since it can't use its STABs at all, despite learning Silver Wind later on, and only having Psychic and Giga Drain for attacks. Not that great, but it can still put things to sleep and with Solarbeam it can be Tangela... with worse SpAtk, a worse typing and Psychic. Coooooooooool. It's not Gen 1 anymore where a Psychic attack immediately puts you 2 tiers higher than you would be otherwise so you can use it, but compared to what its immediately competing against (Pidgeotto excepting), it's not a good look. Only thing to do is release it, I guess. DID YOU GET THAT REFERENCE NINETIES KID? Oh wait they've remade that scene twice since then, so never mind.

(that's not me, the text is randomly broken up here, dramatic effect?)

That's how we managed to deal with all the POKEMON from the S.S. LIBRA in this short time. We can keep doing it, too. If anyone tries to meddle with our fantastic plan, this is what happens!

We had our fill of good scientist in Hordel, so now we must beat up some nerds. Or at least, another nerd in this facility of nerds in this team of nerds.

Every trainer still has a lot of Pokemon, so this floor is taking a while.

I've also heard that the CIPHER HQ has completed final tuning of XD001, the ultimate SHADOW POKEMON. Looks like you got here just a little bit late. Ahaha!

If nothing's done about you, there's a 98% likelihood that this factory and the SHADOW POKEMON plan will be endangered. In that event, the danger to CIPHER goes up a whopping 54%. That's critically bad news. I suppose we'll have to coax you into giving up the chase right here.

Worth it, the sooner I beat this guy, the better.

Oh hey the vanishing floor glitch can happen in battles too.

And then it fixes itself? Regardless, in most Pokemon games, you always need a Gyarados answer since that mon pops up a bit. You still need that in these games, but you should also have a Shedinja answer. Not that that's difficult.

Magneton, 60 catch rate (62%, low health, paralyzed, Ultra Ball), starting moves: Shadow Rave/Double-Edge, Shadow Hold/Refresh, Shadow Sky/Rain Dance, Thunder

We've had a few sun options with Grass types, but rain options are usually Water types, with this little exception. It's 50/50 whether it can use rain, since you do at least weaken Fire moves, but aside from Thunder, it doesn't do much else, so Thunderbolt can be a lot more reliable. The lack of a second special move is also a shame, since, like Tangela, Magneton has very little in the way of variety, it doesn't even learn a single Steel move bar Metal Sound! So against Ground types, you'll have to use Normal moves and up against Steelix... you're just hosed, despite what your ability might lead you to believe. So like with Tangela, if dropping down bolts is what you want to do, hey this mon is great at that! But if you want it to do anything else then you'll be very sad indeed. I can't even mention Thief! I suppose there's always Hidden Power...

Dunno what this is, but maybe we can knock out a guard with it.

Alright, the roof. We're nearly done with this place since we did a chunk of it last update. Honestly doing this place in one go is pretty boring and miserable, so I think it worked out.

Despite his model and powerful Pokemon, this guy is not a Cipher Cmdr. That is given to Exol only, but despite that we never see him again after the ONBS raid, which is really weird.

That's one negative about this game: Cipher is just pretty meh, since they have way too many peons and you never really see or refight most of them ever again, which is in stark contrast to the last game. It helped that they varied up the designs of the Cipher guys and they didn't have 99% of the Shadow Pokemon so you could go, oh, this trainer had that Pokemon. But it's whatever really, their design is still kinda neat and they're still fun.

You wait six parts to see this model again and then two come at once.

It's hilarious how bad Triple Kick is.

I always found it weird the AI used Psych Up for no reason. This is why I'm not worried about Skynet, the AI will just use Agility on a Poison type forever.

I think I have an idea where this S.S. Libra came from, but I need to be sure.

Venomoth, 75 catch rate (78%, low health, Net Ball), starting moves: Shadow Rush/Silver Wind, Shadow Mist/Refresh, Substitute, Psychic

I suppose since we're going over a lot of Kanto Pokemon, we'll have to start comparing the various Poison types we'll run into. Venomoth is like Butterfree except with slightly higher stats. It also can't use its STAB since its Attack is meh, but all it really gets is Psychic and Giga Drain to use. Like you can definitely use Venomoth, I should know, but no Sludge Bomb decides if you'll have an easy time with it. Though since you don't have to think about physical moves, it's not the end of the world, but you'll have to use them anyway to fill moveslots. So yeah, take your powder moves and your couple of special moves and your slightly better typing and your lack of sun and go do stuff, I guess. Sometimes it's tough talking about mediocre Pokemon when they're specifically placed at the end of the game due to the developers being cute. And be honest, you'd forgotten I'd even used Mothra, you monsters.

Weepinbell, 120 catch rate (78%, low health, Ultra Ball), starting moves: Shadow Rave/Magical Leaf, Shadow Hold/Morning Sun, Sludge Bomb, Sweet Scent

So we've had Grass types, Bug types pretending to be Grass types and Poison types without Sludge Bomb. Weepinbell is a slow mixed attacker and is able to be pretty useful with the moves its given, mainly cause of Sludge Bomb. Like most stone evolutions, you can get the shiny new form right away, since you can relearn Sleep Powder whenever and then decide if you're going sun. It definitely fixes its Speed and lets it loose Solarbeam, but makes it really weak to Fire. Like other Pokemon, it can't do a huge amount, but what it can do is pretty good, since it learns good moves, makes use of its STAB(!) and will do you just fine for the rest of the game. Pretty good time to pick one up, honestly.

Ah, finally, one of the best moves in the series. None of our team can learn it... we should fix that.

Whoops! I left it on my desk! That's not smart... oh, hey! That's my SYSTEM LEVER! You went and got it for me! Thank you! ...wait! Who are you anyway?! You don't belong here! Darn! If the voltage goes up even a little, the computer controlling this whole facility will shut down! And, oh my gosh! If that were to happen, the SHADOW POKEMON production software could be destroyed! I can't let you lay one finger on this CONTROL MACHINE!

Hm? Did you say something? I was just trying to remember what Sassy did. Uh, +SpDef -Spd. Hmm, that's not bad actually.

Even Shellder falls after enough super effective physical attacks, though he doesn't go down easy.

That's actually kinda smart since Hotdog is out but I don't think it really matters. Because Hotdog is a monster.

He runs away regardless, so I guess he wasn't that bothered.

Pull the lever, David!

Right lever!

Oh, no! What the blazes?! The SHADOW POKEMON production software's been deleted! GORIGAN gets furious if things don't get his way! He's going to chew me out again!

Weird that Smarton is one of the few Cipher guys we actually rematch, with the Hexagon Brothers being the main ones. Well his mons were interesting, but whatever, no Shadow Pokemon.

Pretty good so far, let's wrap this up.

Hey wait a minute, you didn't have this earlier! Shame too, since it's our final team member!

Arbok, 90 catch rate (62%, low health, Ultra Ball), starting moves: Shadow Rush/Sludge Bomb, Shadow Half/Refresh, Glare, Bite

Okay good, it has Sludge Bomb, that's the first step, so what else can this snake do? Well, in a doubles game, it can Intimidate, which is really cool, but I'm fine not having it since it'd get repetitive during the game. It also learns some nice TMs, which a lot of Pokemon in this facility have been missing, such as Earthquake and Iron Tail and even Giga Drain! Shame we don't get FRLG Move Tutors for Rock Slide, but at least it can't learn Rock Tomb, so I'm not saddled with that lovely move. Of course since its stats aren't very impressive, it's not going to be too impressive and it'll need Protect to stay alive most likely. But hey, as far as Poison types go, it's alright, why not?

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle...

Cipher Admin Theme

Impossible! One kid took down all these SHADOW POKEMON we made? Urrgggh! In wrecking my factory, you smeared dirt all over my good name and standing!

It's final admin time!

Cipher Admin Battle

Ah the Protect Earthquake combo. I hadn't missed it.

Still, his team is quite weak to Pineapple, so it's whatever. Gorigan can be pretty tough, but we've been dealing with these attacks since Dakim! We'll be fine.

M-Mostly.

But I've also got Protect, you just forgot since I've barely felt like I had to use it until now.

Protect works better when you have teammates to cover you, which our team can't completely do right now, but we'll get there.

And of course there's still more Shadow Pokemon. Probably more than necessary, but hey, more chances for me to reset, right? ...r-right?

Of course this mon is a Shadow Pokemon. Yikes.

Just because they're his last Pokemon doesn't mean they don't hit REALLY HARD. Including a new move in Shadow Storm, which is a 95BP special move with 100% accuracy that hits both opponents. Upgrade to Shadow Rave, aye, but I don't know what Primeape also has it. We don't see it, but this is also Shadow Down's first appearance too, which lowers both opponent's Defense by 2 stages and has 100% accuracy. Pretty nasty, but it's also pretty uncommon.

Hypno, 75 catch rate (78%, low health, paralyzed, Ultra Ball), starting moves: Shadow Storm/Psychic, Shadow Down/Baton Pass, Meditate, Shadow Ball

Definitely one of the weirder Psychic types (which is saying a lot!), Hypno is specially bulky and, uh, that's about it. Being mixed, its moveset ain't as bad as you'd think, since a free Psychic and Shadow Ball is pretty nice. You'll be focusing on its physical side, since, of course, its only special moves are Psychic, but it can learn Brick Break and Body Slam, so it has some pretty drat good coverage. Though since its stats are so mediocre, it won't impress you much, but that applies to most Pokemon we've encountered this update, so I'm not too bothered about it. While you've probably never touched it, this mon is just weird enough with just enough good moves to kinda work.

Primeape, 75 catch rate (78%, low health, paralyzed, Ultra Ball), starting moves: Shadow Rush/Cross Chop, Shadow Storm/Helping Hand, Focus Energy, Reversal

The pissed off monkey sent out a pissed off monkey and it hasn't really changed since we used it a few years ago (man, has it really been that long?). It hits hard with Fighting moves and then learns... most TMs, what the hell? The standards are there, such as Earthquake, Iron Tail, Rock Tomb and Aerial Ace (though the latter two are postgame), but there's also Thunderbolt and Overheat. Well, no Shadow Ball kinda sucks, but I guess you could use special ape if you wanted to? As it is, it won't be doing much to the Levitate Ghosts, but its Attack is high enough it'll definitely put a dent into anything you point it at. While some of its coverage moves are still a while away and it won't be critting fools all day erry day, it'll still hit you just as hard as it used to, even as most things change around it.

Bring it, I'm a Super Metroid speedrunning superstar.

Master Greevil?

Oh... uh, w-wow! I totally did not see this coming!

I must say I am taken aback. I never once imagined that you would destroy our factory. But that's not important. Even though the mass output of SHADOW POKEMON has ended, our plan itself is unharmed. We have already completed XD001's final tuning. It now rests with me.

XD001?! The ultimate SHADOW POKEMON that's resistant to purification?!

Now, I shall prepare our final plan to activate XD001. Do you honestly think you can stop me? I shall be at CIPHER's HQ. It is on CITADARK ISLE off the coast of GATEON PORT. It is an impregnable fortress that repels all with cruel waves and thick clouds. No one can reach it! Come if you dare. I'll enjoy waiting for you. Hohohoho!

The place will be swarming with TRAINERS carrying the SHADOW POKEMON I made! ...even though there should be a lot more SHADOW POKEMON... If XD001 didn't drop that ship in the desert, we wouldn't have taken so long tuning the SHADOW POKEMON. Hyahyahya! But it doesn't matter. There's plenty of SHADOW POKEMON to welcome you in style! How many are there? Heheh, I can't tell you that. If I did, it'd floor you! It's just a matter of time before the world belongs to us. You'd better be ready for it!

Cipher Key Lair

If we wanted to know about every single Shadow Pokemon in this game, including all the ones we have yet to meet, it's now in our Shadow Monitor.

We're all done here, so we need to head back the way we came, which while a little annoying ain't a huge deal.

These two weird guys took off with a SHADOW POKMEON! One had like, a mohawk, and the other had hair like, a ball! Darn it! They made off with the last SHADOW POKEMON that came off the production line before it shut down!

If we had talked to the other worker upstairs, we would find out exactly what Pokemon that was, but of course that'd be spoilers. What isn't spoilers is more Battle CDs have appeared, because of course they have. These are the last ones for the main game, the next flag for the final ones is beating the game.

That's that. We'll head to the nearest Pokemon Center in Phenac and then it's to Gateon Port.

Our team is now nearly complete. Once everyone's purified and got cool moves then we'll be ready to finish the game. I didn't fancy going all the way back to a PC when we were right at the end of the Key Lair, so we'll be using Arbok for quite a bit. Oh yeah, Shadow Half is a very rare move that halves the current HP of all Pokemon on the field, so a very potent Super Fang. It has 100% accuracy and the user has to skip a turn, so while it's risky, being able to halve both opponent's HP is super good. We'll be using this one.

Make sure to take these items for the greater good. Weird that the Metal Coat is the Steel boosting item, but is also the only one with another purpose. More random trivia, the Magnet is the only one that doesn't appear in any way in Colosseum. Weird, right?

While we have a list of every Shadow Pokemon now, I'll let you guys have a sneek peak at the next one on the list. Uh, not the next one we'll encounter though.

Gateon Port

What in the ham sandwich is going on?

Once Grandpa get down to it and got serious with it, he put together something kind of amazing. Come over here, guy! You have to listen to my grandpa! I tell you, it's great! Look, I'm even giddy!

...well, I'll be! CIPHER's headquarters is on CITADARK ISLE? And you intend to go there?!

CITADARK ISLE, huh? When it's on a place like that, it's no wonder nobody's found CIPHER's base. The currents around the ISLE are swift, and the weather is always storming. The place can't be approached by sea or by air.

PERR. That was certainly true before. But, now, however...

I get it, Grandpa! The ROBO KYOGRE, right?

Precisely, PERR! Our ROBO KYOGRE will be able to reach the ISLE! All right, we must prepare to launch the ROBO KYOGRE for DAVID! Come, PERR!

Yes, sir!

Oh hey, remember those characters at the HQ Lab we haven't seen for over half the game? Yeah, me neither.

It's all ready to go. You can leave whenever you're ready. Perhaps the ROBO KYOGRE was always meant for you to ride from the start.

There's no telling what you'll run into on CITADARK ISLE. You be careful. If the going gets rough, you scoot back right away, okay? Don't try to overdo things. Oh, yeah. I think the POKEMON MART has added new merchandise. Stock up on supplies before you go!

Oh, no! I beg your pardon! Uh... MAX POTION, and uh... FULL RESTORE! Would you like some?

We definitely need to stock up, Citadark Isle is going to be quite the long one. But of course we're not heading there straight away. There's still a fair few things to do around the region before we finish the game. Colosseum might've been this long, but XD still has a good chunk left.

Pokemon HQ Lab

It's a secret to everyone!

Usually takes some stories a lot longer to get into the basement.

I think the situation calls for a special solution. DAVID, there's something here that I'd like you to use. Go on, open that box and take what's inside.

You should only use it if you're sure that is the right thing to do. Keep at it!

Thanks dad. I won't be using this on the first Shadow Pokemon we see, it's a really good idea to save this until later. But not for what you're thinking.

Ah, that's why he hasn't messaged us for a rematch.

Well, how about that. CHOBIN didn't need to send an E-MAIL. But, that's fine. CHOBIN has successfully upgraded the ROBO GROUDON. What modification has been made is a secret, though. Let's begin!

Chobin Battle

Alright time for our... sixth battle against Chobin. That seems like way too many, but that's how it ended up. Let's start with Shadow Half.

Mmm that's the stuff. It's not a big deal if Arbok faints, he can't earn exp right now anyway.

Shellder is getting closer and closer, but no Ice STAB is annoying.

Chobin has been getting stronger and stronger, but his sun team is a bit disjointed, so it's not that bad.

Skiploom is annoying, but only as annoying as Skiploom ever get.

Our wombo combo is just too much.

Better luck next time champ. Because of course there's a next time.

Kaminko's Manor

Soon this Battle CD search will end. But not today.

This is JOVI's diary! CHOBIN's not allowed to write in this!

KANDEE's a good singer, and she's really pretty. JOVI wishes JOVI could be a star like that. JOVI knows! JOVI will get big brother to take me to ONBS! When people at ONBS see JOVI, they'll try to recruit JOVI for sure. When is big brother coming home?

Yep, there's yet another Battle CD in this area, after the two separate times we've already been here getting Battle CDs. Mental.

But that's it for this time. We'll cleanup Orre some more and then probably head to spooky isle.

Arbok, huh? Weird choice, but I guess nothing here was an impressive mon. This is a Gen 3 game though, so shouldn't it be a Seviper instead?

When there is no real hope we must
mint our own. If the coin be
counterfeit it may still be passed.

Shadow Half is a really interesting move; Super Fang is really the only comparison and it only hits one Pokemon, while Shadow Half hits everyone. I wonder how Shadow Half would play as a non-shadow move in competitive double battles without a recharge turn (since it would be a useless gimmick otherwise).

Butterfree, Beedrill, Pidgeotto and Magneton were a bit of a letdown to catch just because they're really easy to find in Fire Red and Leaf Green (and all the Gen 3 games in Magneton's case). They're not even version-exclusive Pokemon like Zangoose, Shellder, or Arbok are, you can go to Viridian Forest or the Power Plant and find all of them in like 15 minutes max.

Also, I hold a special place in my heart for Venomoth because it was the Pokemon that introduced me to Colosseum and Gale of Darkness. Back during the Gen 4 era I was working on completing the Pokedex with help from the GTS. I requested a Venomoth and got a very curious-looking Venomoth in return: I'd never seen "Distant Land" as a location before, the National Ribbon was also a strange new ribbon, and what kind of moveset is Silver Wind, Refresh, Substitute, and Psychic? A TM, a Move Tutor move, and Venomoth can't even learn Refresh!

Upon discovering Colosseum and Gale of Darkness, I literally went and bought a Gamecube and both games, plus a GBA-GCN link cable to trade forward these unique new Pokemon. Totally worth it. Thank you mystery GTS person for sending me a Venomoth from Orre and allowing me to discover some of the most memorable and fun Pokemon games I've had the pleasure of playing.:)

DARK INFERNO ROOK!
When you think Cobra, you think Cobra Commander, so his name should be Rednammoc

It's an Arbok? Well we can name it Noodle, since it's noodle-like, right?

...yeah, but seriously, it's a Cobra, so let's be ironic and call it Eoj I.G. or something.

Remember that one time you totally botched that snap?
There's already been a Solid Snake, a Liquid Snake, and a Solidus Snake.

My vote is for the fourth Snake twin, Gas Snake.
