yes, socialist economies can potentially be great at producing things as they are

and granted, a ton of capitalist "innovations" serve no purpose but to draw more money from the consumer

but tell me about the last socialist consumer innovation

check out these kickin rad innovations:

life expectancy up from 36 to 72

free socialized healthcare

free world class education

free housing

death to landlords

no footbindings

wiping out illiteracy

clean water

well funded public transportation

gender equality

etc

pretty great innovations imo

if China is so bad at producing consumer goods why are you using an iPhone made on China :smug:

xiaomi phones are better and cheaper than their us equivalents. I have a friend who used her xiaomi 3 for many many years before finally switching, and i think the only reason it busted was too many drops.

i haven't gotten one only because my us service refuses to accept chinese phones, probably due to government sanction. lmao

Because there are caveats. Namely, you need to have been born in the city to receive any of the services it provides, including the free housing and healthcare and all that. Population control y'know.

Talking about socialism in the abstract when it comes to innovation, or even innovation itself in the abstract, is silly. Innovativeness in specific areas is the consequence of real attributes of an economy. You shouldn’t ask whether socialism can innovate, but what it takes for an economy to encourage the kinda of innovation you find desirable and what socialism would have to look like for it to do that. If you can show that crucial measures to encourage innovation are incompatible with socialist principles, congrats, I guess.

Obviously an overly micromanaged state-planned economy will only effectively innovate on areas that the state’s leaders consider worthwhile to invest resources in and let their designated innovators experiment freely. Besides, not even markets can force innovations where there are no resources to innovate or implement the innovations, they just kill the companies that can’t compete and replace them with more efficient ones.

which is a cornerstone of garbage neoclassical econ mainly because the people they model are psychopath ceos who are super worried about "leisure time ( i.e. unemployment)" vs "work" and selling crisp bran cereal to stop you from masturbating
