So is La Stella going to cry again when he gets sent down for a week? I don't think it's a bad move. The team needs to hit and you can replace Murphy with Russell in late game. This does make me wonder if Bryant's injury is worse than they're saying.

Apparently Bryant is taking live batting practice today, so unless you’re worried he’s going to be rusty for the next month+ this move doesn’t make sense to me aside from all the outside stuff. Yes, he’s been good since the break but where are the at bats for everyone? Hopefully Murphy (or Russell) agrees with the bench lifestyle.

Russell is playing through a hand injury and is an offensive blackhole as a result, and Ben can't play every day. My guess is Bote gets 3B until Bryant is back, Javy slides to SS, Murphy gets 2B, and Russell gets lots of rest if not a straight up DL trip.

Just to pile on this shitshow it's been pointed out that while he hasn't played the position since 2016, Murphy was always a way better 3B than he was a 2B, so this could also be a sign that the Cubs aren't optimistic about Bryant coming back any time soon.

I can't say I didn't see this coming, but it still blows. And I thought the first year of Lester's deal was a mixed back, this has been an absolute shitshow by comparison. Also Addy is scratched tonight for "shoulder, hand, and leg issues". Considering he's apparently been dealing with a hand injury sapping all of his ability to hit since loving July you'd think he's have been on the DL by now, but this is the Cubs so he keeps playing until he literally falls apart at the seams. Why is this team so loving bad at using the DL?

So I don't really agree with the overall bent of this David Haugh article, but it does contain the nugget that the Cubs only approved the trade "after receiving assurances that Murphy had worked with Major League Baseball about being more inclusive since making those [homophobic] comments." I'd need to hear it from Murphy before I actually bought it though so until then I'm treating it at about the same level as the Astros' "unprecedented due diligence" on Osuna. I am curious how much if at all Chicago sports media is going to bring attention to it. With Chapman his domestic violence suspension was fresh and so was pretty much talking point #1, but Murphy's comments are years old now and I've seen several sites praise the signing without even bringing up the bigotry. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole scene just tries to discreetly ignore it, particularly if he comes right out of the gate hitting well.

Their closer had a 2-run lead in the 9th and gave up 6 runs. Overall it was an awesome experience. Their mascots rule and their concessions are much more reasonably priced than a MLB game.
