Azza Bamboo posted:So we're in agreement that the state isn't somehow trying to preserve your house and pay your care for you. In fact the laws are tighter than I had thought. I didn't say it was, though given the visceral reactions I've managed to provoke I don't think I articulated myself very well at the outset. Whilst the law is written with the intent of being tight, it still places the burden of proof on the Local Authority and they are bound to bring the case to court. Whilst there is indeed no time limit on the transfer of the house (I know they refer to a 7-year rule, but it's confusing and nonsense), the use of trusts can make it very difficult for LA's to prove that a deliberate deprivation of capital occurred. I tried to find a couple of cases from when I had to do my exam on this but I don't remember them and I don't have my textbooks to hand; but there have been cases where the judge ruled that because the person in care wasn't in failing health at the time of the transfer or because they had such a good family health history, they couldn't say that giving their house to their child was a deliberate move to escape paying care fees. There are other rules on tangential topics that govern transfers like your house to your kids being 'at arms length' that can help strengthen an LA's case though; like if you gave your house to them for nothing and lived their rent free it's pretty suspect. But even that has ways to be gotten around. Unfortunately it's a bit cat and mouse and worse so, bringing a case is an additional burden on LA's in terms of time spent and the financial cost of doing it. The rules have indeed tightened since 2014, but they can still be frustratingly lax imo.

It's hosed-up to me that as a cis woman, the same surgeries are so much more accessible to trans people. If you don't want kids as a cis woman, you're going to have a really hard time finding a doctor who'll do surgery on you, because "you might change your mind," "what if you meet a guy who wants kids," etc. Same with breast reduction/removal as a cis woman, there are a ton of hoops to jump through and requirements to qualify. Imo either handle it that paternalistically for everyone or no one

Here the requirements & coverage for a breast reduction/chest reconstruction or hysterectomy are pretty similar for cis women and trans men, except trans men have an additional bottleneck in needing to go to specialist clinics for approval (which have 1yr+ wait times and can require quite a bit of gravel to visit) & and getting a hysterectomy through the government can disqualify you from getting genital surgeries separately. USA is it's own mess, though... Ah, actual advice for the person with the confession: I think our society places a lot of importance on "discovering yourself" as trans and less on what to do when you come to that realization. Do you want to transition? How much do you want it... do you think it will make your life happier? What would it mean for your relationship, lifestyle, and career? Those are big questions, and now is the time to do some soul-searching and talk to some people who have been through this in similar situations. I know folks who have come to terms with gender dysphoria later in life and decided transition wasn't worth pursuing, and others who have transitioned in their 30s and 40s and been perfectly happy with their choice. It's a big thing to uncover about yourself, but think of this as not some self-obligation or fundamental change in who you are, but just another option to evaluate in the course of choosing the path you'll take through life. It's your call what will be right for you. The #1 thing you can do is start interacting with trans people, and also people in general who share your feelings on gender, and think about what your courses might look like.

What we're arguing is transgender healthcare. I believe your argument is that the NHS is strapped for cash and will need to drop certain services. Sure but the interesting part of these discussions isn't what "is". It's what we think "ought" to be. Do you think transgender healthcare services ought to be axed as a result of the economic situation you describe? Azza Bamboo fucked around with this message at 16:01 on Aug 22, 2018 |

I also think that maybe gender reassignment surgery was aging hella traction and starting to take off before we really started to explore he mental health implications of gender dysphoria. Many (most?) trans people are of sound mind or possess a degree of certainty, but the idea that every single person who decides to change their identity so dramatically is doing so from a healthy place, a safe environment, and not under duress from mental, emotional, or physical instability just seems totally impossible and I’ve met enough trans persons who regretted it, or at least thought it would make life easier, or reversed their decision that we’re seeing people making these extremely personal changes without going through what I would consider to be extremely important personal inventories. My most eye opening one was a friend who thought he was trans and then after years of investigating and therapy he was like “nah I’m just a queer dude who likes to act really effeminate and loves guys and can’t wait to be a loving father. I want all of societies female gender roles... I just don’t want to give up my dick” and I realized “hell same”. Also I think raising your child to be genderless is probably bad for the kid because they don’t get to make important identity decisions for themselves and people who do hormone therapy on their kids for gender-bending reasons should have their kids taken away that’s loving crazy.

The 'ought to be' of the NHS is that if you need the treatment but you don't have the means to pay for it, you should automatically qualify. Holding it to any standard lower than that is morally bankrupt imo.

quote:I've always been too afraid to tackle things that need to be done, usually until it is too late It's Friday afternoon in an office, people are working their 9 to 5 job. No one starts anything now, because at 5pm the week is done. Maybe I'm just a bad person but I find my mind works in a weird way. If something undesirable can be "too late", If there's a time at which it's over and irredeemable, I will stall and stall until that time is here so I can say "too late: don't have to deal with that poo poo." I'm wondering if you've said to yourself that your 30s are too late so that you can take the rest of your life off. Like it's now Friday afternoon so it won't be worth starting anything big. That's fine, your life is your choice, but the fact you're posting about it seems to imply that you're unhappy about it. You either make a change to that situation or you don't. I'm sure you know that. Maybe it's a bit scary or stressful to know that. Heck, I'm not perfect when it comes to making the changes that need to be made. This stuff is tough and weird.

Scared goon who can't do things that need to be done, consider chopping off your dick (if your'e a dude). Decisiveness will no longer be an issue as you follow through on a difficult but ultimately good and meaningful decision and you learn to harness your inner strength.

as a cis male I have no opinion on trans issues, except that I'm morbidly looking forward to the inevitable discovery that the estrogen from BC in the water supply really is contributing to the explosion of transgender diagnoses and the resulting Republican war on birth control

I'd be concerned about the long term issues of starting it early but then the kid deciding to stop it later on.

Azza Bamboo posted:I am ignorant of tax systems good sir. Pray tell, what is a flat tax system and what are your thoughts? Well, some would argue that if you flatten your dick first, there is much less girth to cut through when you are cutting it off, therefore making the exercise much easier. However, that point of view conveniently ignores the fact that the dick matter is condensed into a much smaller area without actually reducing the amount of matter at all, which doesn't actually reduce the energy required to remove the appendage.
