Just because you're dual wielding does mean jack poo poo. A bv elementalist is dual wielding and it's a completely different things from say, a vaal double strike champion

There's also southpaw builds - characters that do all their attacking with the mainhand weapon and have a stat stick in the offhand for various bonuses. PoE has a ludicrous amount of depth and different ways things can be mixed together. ...but given that it was someone asking questions as a newbie, I'm pretty sure they were asking for an archetypal dual-wielding melee character

Stat sticks are dumb and I hope they get removed.

In related news, there seems to be an expansion coming out soon, and the league is ending. While I don't especially care about new expansion stuff when everything is already new and weird to me, what happens to builds when there's a major patch? Do I get a free respec? It'd be kind of cool to have like a week to mess around with no consequences.

When the current league ends everything gets sent to standard where there's a few days of no separate league while ggg gets things ready. Old characters do tend to get full respects if there's a substantial enough change to the tree/ascendancies when a new patch (i.e., new league) starts.

This game is all about making new characters. While it is possible to re-spec a character completely (besides changing your base class), it is really really expensive to do so. You get some re-spec points during the course of the main story, but that's for minor changes ("I'm going Chaos Innoculation so I no longer need all these life nodes"), nothing drastic ("I'm tired of this Energy Shield Righteous Fire/Scorching Ray Trickster, let's make him an Life Arc Trap Saboteur instead"). As stated above, at league end everyone gets dumped to Standard (or Hardcore if you survived League Hardcore). No one really plays Standard, which means if you're going to dick around on there and need to buy items...good luck up with that. Plus the economy over there is really screwy since it's the dumping place for everything ever. Vasudus posted:Before Path of Building became a thing it was super common to keep a lot of previous league characters so you could use the free respecs to try out things. Now you don't really have to do that except to get a feel for the character mechanics if that's an issue. Also true. I keep all of my old characters mainly to squat on the names. You can take "JillNyeTheScionGal" from my cold (from MTX) dead hands. whypick1 fucked around with this message at 19:55 on Aug 22, 2018 |

I see. I'm familiar with the basic concept of leagues since I've played Diablo 3, but I'll keep that in mind.

The current league and the flashback events end Monday @ 5pm cst then after some down time all of the characters get sent to standard/hardcore respectively. Everything in your stash will also get sent over as well. If your first character is in a league your hideout will not transfer over until the servers are reset when the new league hits in 9 days. Everyone will get a full respec on their characters with the new league so sure, go nuts right now in trying things out. POE is very dense when starting off so making a few characters to see how things work is good practice. Once the new patch hit though, be sure to make a new character in the new delve league as that is where the majority of players in the game will be playing. You will start from scratch but the guild stash can help a lot getting those few bit of gear to get going, and you get to play with all the new stuff as opposed to languishing in standard.

I have not so fond memories of spending the better part of a morning planning out my tree, then carefully going through my standard stash finding the perfect gear to make my build idea work, then finding out that it performs insanely poorly. This has happened dozens of times.

Yeah, PoE Leagues are like D3 seasons in that it's a fresh start and new economy, but PoE actually has meaningful gameplay differences from league to league, while D3 stagnated super hard a few years ago. (I really enjoyed early RoS, when they were shaking things up a bunch with every major patch, but it's been basically untouched besides making numbers bigger and a few QoL improvements for a long-rear end time now ) It's not a terrible idea to roll a character and play them for a bit now to get a feel for how the game works, and then start anew in the new league for the long haul. If possible you should also definitely join the guild for the new league, we can be super helpful with advice and free poo poo! (we are also horrible people)
|
# ? Aug 22, 2018 20:24 |

Similar to D3, it only takes about one league for the current game to feel a bit stale, so playing the game in standard seems like madness. Engaging with the new mechanics and figuring out new builds is "the game" for most people.

Neversink has posted a survey asking how we, the people, would like him (and other filtermagicians) to handle the filter goodies (Beams! Map Markers!) coming next league: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf0P2YV-StQdaCgfxBQeG6erOwUloY9jZT9vOQu_qvBMxdanQ/viewform?usp=sf_link It's fairly lengthy but worth the effort imo, considering the work they are putting up for us.

Light radius likely to be a thing in delve? Wondering whether to grab nodes that are very close by that have light radius just as Light of Divinity. Not saying that I'll go far out my way for them but curious if they are 1-3 away, would it be worth it.

Character light radius will do nothing in delve, flares and the minecart will provide light.

I really hope they do implement some mechanic benefits to light radius, at least in certain areas/mods. Right now, it's basically a troll mod to roll on a rare.

I'm surprised there isn't some gimmick item that increases area of effect or damage or w/e by your increased light radius amount

It was established a very long time ago that things like thorns, light radius, and flat regen was put as nods to dilute the pool. I mean sure things can change but at least right now they're intentionally poo poo.

Unique items often change the design rules - making you reevaluate the worth of mods in the context of a unique mod. I think that all three of the below could use some game-bending uniques that make them relevant in some way.

Corona Solaris (https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Corona_Solaris) scales Acurracy with Light Radius, although I have yet to see a build using it.

That's a strange scaling property considering you could just stack accuracy anyways. Would be curious if there was an item that has light radius that is good for whatever build this would be used in that doesn't have accuracy on it.

I don't really sell rares either unless they're overwhelmingly good.
