Rutibex posted:Couldn't they just use the transporter to clean everything? just lock onto the loads and dematerialize them into the ships general protein supply. We never see them but I bet they have Roombas and poo poo, little unobtrusive robots to do the vacuuming and whatnot when nobody is looking. They can automate nearly everything. Didn't the doctor have to handle Voyager on his own a couple times? And the doctor is just a program inside the ship's computer. The ship can run itself, at least for a while. It could certainly get by with a crew 1/10th size if necessary. Most jobs aren't strictly necessary, but having a job and a purpose makes some people feel good (and keeps them from going crazy). As long as there are people who want to follow a career track the federation keeps it around. If nobody wants to be a jizz mopper, then they add a few lines of code and the holodeck auto-sanitizes itself between users.

I mean when you think about it they don't fly around with storage bays full of furniture and people can and do customise their furniture so I've always sort of assumed that either the in room replicators can sort of make furniture or there's some sort of large portable replicator they use to make furniture. Since its already established that replicators can intake items and well as create them, maybe the Enterprise cleaners just push a machine into the room, and when it activates it descontructs everything, and then reconstructs it. Sure technically that's not your grandmother's family heirloom anymore, but then again you die every time you use the teleporter so what would you know?

That was indeed a Stargate SG-1 episode. where they found an Ancient device that attunes people to see them. I really like that one, just because there's no actual villain and it's just neat sci-fi .

the holodeck creates a fully sentient person with their own dreams and personality who sweeps and mops the floor after you’re done then annihilates that person into oblivion also moriarty died in star trek generations

The Holodeck specifically uses force fields to make the holograms 'solid' in ways that can simulate drat near anything, I imagine making them self-cleaning is incredibly easy.

Been rewatching tng and in season 1 and 2 it is explicit that the holodeck creates physical objects, beaming them into existence like a food replicator. If that makes you go, but..wait...what about the people. How does that work with bullet in guns does it make gunpowder? You just replicated flesh and a brain? Wtf So it's not surprising they soft reboot the tech when they think about it. Anyway when riker says End Program like 4 globs of cum just fall out of the air and onto the ground.

It's also probably easier to just replicate a pile of snow than try to render a dynamically-generated snowball from a pile. There's also the issue of eating and drinking on the Holodeck, and it seems pretty reasonable to just replicate it.

I dont have the lines but first dixon hill (uuuuuuugh) episode has them being replicated and I had a "wait, what?" Moment. Even by the time of the first Moriarty episode. They say vague, you cant survive out there stuff. Not "here is the emitter beam. It cant shine outside that door, that's why you are stuck." I dont think they had the tech canon locked down yet. You can explain it as the characters just not understanding how it works though if it hurts your head canon Bombadilillo fucked around with this message at 15:26 on Aug 24, 2018 |

the toilets are also replicators, because why use a different kind of device when replicators can already dissolve solid matter?

Rom was on the Sanitation crew so I figured they had sewage pipes that funnel all the poo poo into a giant replicator specifically for dematerializing the horrible slurry of various alien shits Then again Cardassian design would mandate a ten-man Bajoran poo poo shoveling crew regardless of whether they could pipe it directly to the replicator or not, maybe the feds really do just poo poo in the sink

I used to work in TV/video and I like talking production and stuff like that so every 3 months or so I'll like a show enough to want to talk about it in TVIV and like clockwork after about 2-3 pages people in there will start honest to god fights about the dumbest poo poo and remind me "oh right that's why I don't do this". One of the best times was back when Game of Thrones was still behind the books and the entire thread would meltdown every other page because someone would speculate something based on the show, someone would immediately accuse them of being a "book reader" who's spoiling things just to look cool in the thread and then the next page would be like 5 different people demanding the thread be a no-fun zone because they DESERVED THE GOD GIVEN RIGHT to keep posting incessantly about the show while also somehow avoiding the not just the contents of a book, but the fact that a book exists. Because God forbid they either just go read a loving book about something they're OBSESSED with themselves or just not be extremely online all the time.
