He was always pretty conservative (on women's issues, crime, race stuff etc) but gained a lot of popularity by breaking with his party over certain key issues (immigration, torture, etc). But then he went hard right on just about everything to avoid losing his seat to the tea party which destroyed a lot of the goodwill he built with his formerly principled positions. But also yeah it's just that these forums and certain parts of Twitter aren't particularly representative. All his obits are absolutely glowing.

A lot of it is trump presidency optics. Like how people are coming out of the wood work to say Bush wasnt so bad because he said some uncontroversial things like "media good". If it weren't for Donald Trump he wouldnt be remembered quite so fondly.
