I've seen articles on this before, and I've always found it baffling.

If you're not going to spend the money, why bother making it? Is it really just a game to them about making numbers go higher? And if there's so much excess they could do without, why don't they, I don't know, pay the people working under them more?

Although I guess that's the whole point of this thread.

They invest their money, which means they pay people the money in exchange for stocks. Buffet could retire and live a life of luxury for the rest of his life, but he cares about making the world a better place, which is why he gives money to people who he thinks will do real work to make the world a better place.

I didn't know that. A lot of airlines treat their staff like poo poo but I'd hazard a guess that virgin aren't as bad as some of the middle eastern airlines who essentially enslave their flight attendants and other staff.
Qatar airways is supposed to be particularly nasty.

You may have me here, I can't speak to any of the foreign based airlines.

So domestically speaking, Virgin is bad to its crews

It's mostly PR and clever tax loophole gaming, though tbf I think he genuinely wants to do good things but he also genuinely loves making lots of money and will throw the first under the bus to further the second.

He donates a bunch to "charity", but he structures it in such a way that the money doesn't generally wind up actually going to charity and instead goes into this trust system that's tax exempt but still entirely controlled by him or someone he designates. He talks about how unfair the tax system is to the poor while he simultaneously wrings money out of minorities. He's the epitome of "I want to make the world a better place as long as I don't actually have to do anything or change my life at all" but for the ultra-rich.

it's pretty close to this; they are literally addicts who have lost control of their lives

some people are addicted to collecting various things, we call them hoarders; some people are addicted to alcohol, we call them alcoholics; some people are addicted to small-time gambling, we call them gambling addicts; these people are recognized as suffering from diseases of the mind and offered treatment (well, ideally)

some people are addicted to making their bank accounts as big as possible. we call these sociopaths captains of industry, let them run our world, and then wonder why poo poo goes to pot

He's definitely a piece of poo poo, he's just one of the very few ultra rich that is clear eyed about who he is and what he's doing to this world.

Capitalism will definitely collapse under the weight of its own contradictions. Famously, depressingly, there is a phrase for what happens then: "Socialism or barbarism."

Socialism is not the guaranteed result of the collapse of capitalism. Some people append "fascism" also (socialism, barbarism, or fascism) - which I think is a fine addition. Neo-fascism is going to be so ridiculously hard to overthrow for reasons of technology and globalization.

It's all kind of moot cause capitalism has an insanely high chance of extinguishing human life by the end of the century. We need full communism yesterday. I'll settle for today. Or tomorrow.

McDonalds is going to automate everything they can the moment technology allows them to. Which is cheaper, a $2K kiosk (or whatever it costs) or paying someone $10k a year to stand behind a register.

They are different. You can't live on minimum wage. They should name it zombie wage, or skeleton wage.
