Yes, very dope, as I believe the terminology goes.

Cons are amazing for getting to play stuff you wouldn't normally get a chance to play , or even think of trying in the first place

Don't really get people who go and just play their adventurers league/pathfinder society characters when there's so much else on offer but hey at least they're having fun

So, in a situation where I have to make the best choice between two bad options, with hindsight, what is the better game, Pathfinder or 3.5 D&D? Assume I use Paths of War or Book of Nine swords depending on which is chosen.

I will put in a good word for using Path of War, if only because between PoW, PoW Expanded, and the Medic class, you can run an entire party using just those kinds of classes and still capture every archetype.

Pathfinder is terrible but it's still markedly less terrible than a game of 3.5 where you don't go to the trouble of banning 80% of the spells in the game and excluding every class that isn't tier 3/4.

The real alternative is to drink until you black out so you don't have to deal with either. :v:

Pathfinder at least makes an attempt to lessen most of 3.5s problems, to varying degrees of success. Mostly it brings a lot of the really bad classes up to 'playable'.

I want to vent my spleen about something: why are RPG writers still obsessed with the idea of Japan as an all-consuming economic superpower in 2018? They're 30 years behind.

I'm reading HOSTILE, which otherwise has an engaging background, but it imagines a future where China has collapsed (very possible) and Japan is ready to "step up." Why? It seems purely for the sake of its retro-futurist theme. (Although it is intriguing to me that retro-futurism now means Blade Runner instead of Buck Rogers.) I know that cyberpunk dystopia always extrapolates from current trends, and looking for long-term predictions is silly and missing the point, but I can't remember the last time I read a sci-fi game wherein Albania was leading the space race.

If you're going to obsess over the economy of a nation defined by the US transforming it into a hypercapitalist pawn in the Cold War, why not Korea, or Chile? Not enough honorabu samurai-chan in the Pinochet regime?

You've got guts! Come to my village, I'll buy you lunch.
You can't "extrapolate future trends" if you're already living in a cyberpunk dystopia. :v:

Going back to the eighties or whatever and extrapolating from there is the next-easiest choice.

e: also "transforming it into a hypercapitalist pawn" probably contributes to the appeal of Japan, in addition to all the more obvious "katanas are cool" factors; exporting your hosed up ideology to someone else and realizing that oops, they're better at it than you are is itself a pretty neat/horrifying conclusion to colonial attitudes (even if it isn't a realistic one)

Japan’s a G7 nation, which Chile, Korea, and Albania are not. That comes with some reputational weight, because of the economic weight.

The dumbest part of "Japan as hypercapitalist dystopia" is that it ignores how very deeply the government is involved in planning and influencing the economy. Noted pinko Barry Goldwater called Japan "the only country where Communism ever worked." These are people who made the trains run on time. But during the 80s they had a bunch of money and were doing in some ways better than the US which was in recession, so clearly they must be more capitalist than us. There is no other way.

(I am not calling Japan "Communist" or even "Socialist" but the American perception of Japan as libertarian hypercapialist dystopia is just incredibly wrong)

When I think of hypercapitalism in Japan, I mainly think of their insane culture that's more about controlling every aspect of your life than actually increasing productivity. Same with Korea.

See, what would be interesting is if turning the Russian government into a condom for capitalism ironically redounds to their benefit in the far future and there's a new Russian hegemony.

Then there's the possibility of development in Africa, which China is all about. But how many RPG writers are qualified to deal with that? Trinity is the only game I can think of that made a real go of it.

Pathfinder really does live up to that 3.75 name in so far as there’s a ton of small clarifications and changes that make the game a lot better to play. It’s not going to change anyone’s mind if they don’t like 3e, but it makes for a better game overall.

:siren: New blogpost for The Next Project is up!

Today, we're talking about why there isn't a magic subsystem, as you would find in 3.x/5e-style D&D.
The short answer? Class balance actually matters, and trying to balance resource-having classes against others (who go without) pretty much never gets executed properly.

I also touch on how one of the core conceits of TNP helps to make balanced classes also be unique and interesting.

As always, if you're interested in talking about the game's designs, all goons are welcome to join the TNP Discord. :)
