A fun thing I just learned:

In traditional Lakota culture, a woman could divorce her husband at any time and for any reason. This was most commonly done by the wife dumping the husband's belongings outside their tipi to show he ain't welcome in the house any more.

Welcome back to the Liturgigoon thread, friend.

Say a prayer for John McCain
Who passes from his earthly pain
His eyes are shut upon his brow
He warmongers to angels now

Beyond the sky, where sorrows cease
He rails against the Prince of Peace.
The Holy Spirit, full of love
McCain denounces as “a dove”

...

Reader, should your weather be
Meteors falling lazily
Or if your neighborhood should seem
A John of Patmos fever dream

Then say a prayer for John McCain
Now passed beyond all earthly pain
Not death, with all the peace it brings
Could end his love of bombing things

So I was reading this article on the Vigano letter controversy and something leapt out at me.

The NY Times posted:

Two weeks ago, Archbishop Viganò privately shared his plan to speak out with an influential American friend: Timothy Busch, a wealthy, conservative Catholic lawyer on the board of governors of the media network in which Archbishop Viganò ultimately revealed his letter.

“Archbishop Viganò has done us a great service,” Mr. Busch said in a phone interview Sunday night. “He decided to come forward because if he didn’t, he realized he would be perpetuating the cover-up.”

Mr. Busch said he believed Archbishop Viganò’s claims to be “credible,” and that he did not know in advance that the archbishop would choose to publish his attack in the National Catholic Register, which is owned by the Eternal Word Television Network, where Mr. Busch is on the board of governors.

Mr. Busch said leaders of the publication had personally assured him that the former pope, Benedict XVI, had confirmed Archbishop Viganò’s account. Details and accuracy of that confirmation have not been externally verified.

Yes, yes...Pope Benedict got on the horn to Irondale, Alabama to let EWTN know Vigano was telling the truth :thunk:

I can't imagine a scenario where Benedict betrays his oath of fidelity to Francis just to help out the American Catholic right.

edit: i have read the bell curve in its entirety. even if the authors' argument were true, most of their footnotes link either to things they themselves wrote or things by the same think tank as the one that funded them. Even if I were a racist I'd think it was trash because of those footnotes. It is propaganda disguised as a book. You can't simply "encounter" this book.

he is not only a racist he is using a great deal of waffle to make racists look like the aggrieved party. "why can't you just be logical about this!" he cries. "why are you all so angry about this!"

He is also far too close to the Dark Enlightenment people for my taste, and has gradually been persuaded by them.

But among other beliefs you want to make it more difficult for people to travel so human groups can preserve their "diversity," so I suppose you do not see the warning signs here.

You realize, of course, that in the United States, at least, slavery was abolished by the Civil War. The love that Christians had for their neighbors didn't stop them from enslaving their neighbors in the first place, nor from slaughtering their neighbors over questions of secession and slavery.

maybe you're not familiar but it is a true fact that the abolition movement was very much intertwined with churches and religious people. saying "oh but slave owners quoted the Bible too" does not detract from this

I'm very familiar, trust me. Ibe read and studied the abolitionists. I don't disagree that many people's abolitionism was motivated by their religious beliefs and feelings. But that also doesn't detract from the fact that "slave owners quoted the bible too".

It was Christians who enslaved people and Christians who fought to make them free (and Christians who were enslaved). As much as
Christianity could be used as a voice for liberation, it could be used for repression too.

yeah, it's really bad. in the past year or two a number of women have come forward detailing very gross sexism and abuse claims against prominent people in that community, as well as against rando dudes in that community

one must also come to terms with the fact that this is a community which believes that theoretical computer science wankery research is more important than feeding people who are starving now. lesswrong types are obsessed with ideas like Roko's Basilisk, which is effectively "Cthulhu, but for artificial intelligence wankers". These people believe that, instead of feeding poor people or providing tools to reduce malaria outbreaks, we should pour millions of dollars into researching the theoretical idea that there might be in the future an artificial intelligence program which takes over all computers jn the world and tortures all humans who didn't help it achieve sentience. I'm not kidding. this is an actual thing they believe and which they have used to secure millions of dollars in tax-deductible donations

Yeah I remember some of that stuff from way back when. At the time it was just a smallish blog with weird thought experiments. I used to be super into reading about that stuff but got out of it for various reasons, I think one of the things that made me move on was hearing that some anarchists believed if a technological singularity was imminent it must be prevented by any means possible. I was so shocked, why would anyone want to prevent a technological utopia? Then I realized the implication was it would probably only be a utopia for the 1% and the rest of us would be worse off than we are now.

only commonality between such disparate belief systems is the racism-adjacence.
