A lot like Lubbock was 15 years ago but without the college. Lots of chains, churches, a surprising amount of sprawl. I'm not really sure what draws people to live there or base their business there, but there is a surprising amount of commerce going on. The canyonlands to the northwest are gorgeous. Palo Duro canyon to the southwest is a wonderful campground.

I'm excited -- going to my first UT game in a few years for the home opener against Tulsa. I won tickets in a charity raffle, so they're p sweet seats on the club level which apparently come with free food, beer and wine and an air conditioned area to hang out/cool off in.

It's hard to overstate just how furious the fanbase was when he got hired. Everyone assumed it would be Stoops, and instead they wound up with some offensive line coach who had sucked at Maine with a name no one knew how to pronounce (the last part is still kinda true, it rhymes with parents, for the record). Stoops winning a national title in year 2 didn't exactly calm people down either. At the time I wasn't sure Ferentz would make it to year 4, and now he's going into year 20. The column also extensively quotes one of my favorite professors at Iowa, and one of the few people from the University I still keep in touch with. She was a vice president at the time and one of the more powerful people on the athletic department. She has some awesome stories about that period.

The block C bird logo is fine, but it's honestly a little too cluttered and detailed for how small it is on a helmet. College football fans are just undefeated at resisting change and viewing uniform tweaks as a sign of the apocalypse.

Both schools have "Carolina" in the name, and people are lazy and don't want to be spitting out more syllables than necessary when referring to their team. Other fans can feel free to get into pissing matches about it, I guess, but I'm gonna continue referring to them both as "Carolina" because it's a) accurate and b) usually pretty clear from context which one is being discussed.
