LA vault iirc led everyone turning into ghouls but it was only a demo for the public and not really intended to be a real vault

edit: i don't think? we actually really find any wacky vaults to explore in 2 despite that being the game with the reveal but it was a thing they were planning to expand on in Van Buren

I know in Fallout 2 that vault 13 was revealed to be a long term isolation vault so that the enclave had a supply of non-mutated test subjects, but beyond that I think it's all Fallout bible business.

I honestly don't like the Fallout bible. It was developed by one guy after Fallout was pretty much buried (It took interplay losing the Baldur's Gate licence to even start Van Buren development) in a very informal way. It seems to have little to do with any actual in house development materials and often contradicts information present in the games. I know a lot of people like Chris Avellone and his writing but anything Fallout that cites it I take with a grain of salt. Even though the ship has well and truly sailed on the vault experiment part.

yeah avellone has said himself the bible's not canon or really even a resource, at best you can use it to guesstimate what direction bethesda may go with something

It's not Avellone that made up the Vault experiments though, that was part of the development materials of Fallout 2 and it came from the original Fallout team too. Also, without that idea, we wouldn't have content like Vault 11, so IMO it was good.

I also would be careful to lay a lot of the blame for the Bible inconsistencies on Avellone when the discussions between the members of the original team were never completely settled before release.

Remember, the game came out in a time before internal lore bibles, with a very small team that wasn't super-hierarchical in how it worked (hell, Cain, Boyarsky and Anderson ditched hierarchies more or less completely at Troika).

According to IMDB Katy Townsend, the voice actress for Cait, is from Glasgow. All this time I thought Cait's Irish accent sounded off and now I understand why. I wonder how common it is for Scottish VAs to be asked to play Irish characters.

Weirdly common, I'm assuming its a money reason, or it was just the next best on the talent agencies roster or whatever, not like we're short on actors knocking around Ireland though.

Her accent is dreadful, BUT "stage irish" has never been for Irish consumption, its for the rest of the anglosphere. Not something most irish people would get upset over I don't think.

Though, I've always found it weird that there are Irish people in Fallout games. MacRae in FO2, Moriarty in FO3, then Cait (when its spelled like this its pronounced Catch btw) in FO4. Like, if you're going to imply that Ireland still exists, give us a Fallout: Europe, basically just put me on a horrible nuclear powered boat in the north Atlantic and let me play Pillars of Eternity 2:Fallout Europe edition.

I like the idea of the vaults being designed to test bizarre arbitrary things, like Aperture Science type of research.

A vault where everything is just slightly too big or too small.

A vault, where everyone has the self destructive neurotic tendencies of Larry David.

A vault, but all the furniture is on the ceiling and the lights on the floor, for some reason.

A wild wasteland vault: the vault dwellers are teamed up with pairs of robots. They are forced to watch cheesy movies while vault tech monitors their minds. Not thinking about the logistics of it and how they eat and breathe fits in with the rest of the leaps of logic and suspension of disbelief Fallout asks for us too!

Ya they should lean more into how much the US loving sucked and was a godawful police state. FO4 opening leans in the horror of a peaceful life being destroyed, but fails to portray just had bad things were. Feel like thats a pretty big important thing that gets forgotten a lot. That and the McCarthy era anti-communist bullshit being bad gets forgotten with the faux-satire Liberty Prime and Mr. Gutsies. Thats why the Vault-Tec experiments should be dumb and clearly pointless, don't allow cruelty to hide behind any semblance of valid science.

Would love to see more of what life was like for Chinese-Americans (lovely). I know theres the camps in Old World Blues but its something I'd want to see addressed in the main, core game. There is like a 0% chance of racism in the 1950s era South being addressed in '76, right?

Soiled Meat
FO4 intro and pre-war materials seem to deliberately lean into a bullshit "the government may have been bad (but let's not focus on that), but we still need to respect ARE TROOPS", thus being a grim reminder of why the original intro was such a great satire.

E: 76 doesn't have NPCs so no, it's not going to be addressed.

This is, sadly, more important to me than bettering myself.

I'd make Vaults dedicated to denying or subverting one of the five senses.

Sight - outside of pipboy screens and computers, the vault has no functional lighting system. Even the pipboy's flashlight function is disabled.

Sound - the reactor powering the vault emits a deafening white noise that drowns out sound throughout the entire vault.

Taste - the vault is fed exclusively by Nutripaste, a pulpy substance that contains all the nutrients of a balanced diet... and tastes like paper.

Touch - vault suits are replaced with bulky, heavily rad-insulated onesies that cover the entire body and must be kept on at all times for safety and radiation concerns.

Smell - the ventilation system constantly pumps random essential oils and perfumes throughout the vault.
