Just to clarify this - every gang meter base I've ever seen has the unit disconnect fed from the meter. Not that you would be screwing with it beyond this test, but just FYI. The meter stabs are fed directly off the buswork so the meter will stay lit up no matter what you do with the disconnect. I've no doubt there are exceptions but that's what I've seen.

Oh I know the disconnect is after the meter, but there's no lights in it, and it's a mechanical meter. Nothing to go blank; it just stops moving, and the lights go off in the apartment.

I'm thinking the coils probably are dirty; I'll probably swing by the office and see if they can at least clean the outside unit. The inside coils are a different kind of hell, since it's an above-the-ceiling style air handler+heater+coils that apartments in Texas love. Getting to the coils requires yanking the heater and fan out of the ceiling, plus disconnecting the return air ductwork (if there is any... a lot of apartments I've been in just have an opening in the wall/ceiling from the filter to the air handler). This place actually has a competent maintenance staff, which is a refreshing change after the last place.

Reminds me, I need to bug them about the AFCI that keeps tripping. It's only for the bedroom, and the only thing that's ever on when it trips is the ceiling fan (which stays on 24/7). The vacuum doesn't trip it, so I think the breaker can be ruled out. I'm guessing the ceiling fan motor may be wearing out? I mean... it's 14 years old, it's expected to act out at this age.

I'm all for it (and I've owned a Nest before), she's the one that's iffy about hooking it up. "Well, we're maybe moving when the lease is up next year...". :sigh: I'll probably just hook it up tomorrow anyway. It's 4 wires and a handful of screws, FFS.

I'm glad she went for the Nest though; they also had a Honeywell and ecobee on sale at the same time, but both of those require 5 wires. This is a 4 wire setup (because even really nice apartments are slapped together as cheaply as possible).

Latest casualty is the folding lawn chair that I've been using since my office chair snapped a caster leg a few weeks back; this one was even supposed to be rated to 400 lbs. Apparently not, since my 335-lbs rear end just got dumped on the floor; the rivet holding the front crossbars together sheared completely, and the side bars from the seat back to the front feet snapped in half around the pivot bolt (thanks stress risers!). Not sure what broke first but they're all completely hosed.

Only a little related, but kinda funny (now, anyway). My desk chair is an Ikea special (a pretty nice one for Ikea, but still). I leaned back in it one day, heard a pop, and next thing I know my head hurts really bad and I'm staring at the ceiling fan. The loving back of it popped off, and my roommate said I smacked my head on the end table by the couch on my way down to the floor.

The back had been loose for a couple of weeks. Nothing actually broke; the bolts had just backed out (despite Loctite) and finally popped out. Still have that drat thing, I'm a lot more religious about tightening the screws now and then though.

Also the engine bay is way easier to deal with than the last time I tried this job on a 91 Integra. gently caress that oil filter placement. You need two wrists in succession to crank that thing off.

I also polished my headlights out real good last weekend and refilled my wiper fluid. My car is not magic and guzzles that stuff.

Uh, I too had a 91 Integra. The filter really wasn't bad. Messy yeah, but it was typical FWD 4 cylinder. You didn't need both hands or a filter wrench unless some jackass overtightened it. Try one on a Subaru with the ring of fire exhaust. Or a Toyota with the 1MZ-FE right after it's been driven. The 1MZ has it directly under the front exhaust manifold, wedged up against the radiator fan, while a lot of Subarus... well, a picture says it a lot better.

But a brake job is a bit harder to get right than an oil change. And since you're coming prepared, you're not even gonna spill a drop. :haw:

He found an extremely clean LS400 for $2500 with 110,000 miles, that had both the starter and timing belt (and EGR tube IIRC) replaced within the last 30k miles. I'm super duper jealous.

Most cars have "coil over" suspension already, so the mounts and chassis are already designed for that. And then most aftermarket "coilovers" for cars that do have a seperate shock and spring do still retain that system and just add an adjustable spring perch for height adjustment and corner balancing. It is fairly rare to go from a seperate setup to a coilover (but cars like the nissan 350/370z and corvette come to mind), and in those cases, yes, the chassis generally should have reinforcement of some sort. With a race car, there will often be roll cage pickups tied to the shock mounts in the chassis and reinforcement plates to make them stronger. Or there should be.

It's generally only old, old cars where modding with a coilover can break the shock perch. ACVW people did it all the time to fix the "butt sag" that they were endemic with, because it's a drat sight easier than adjusting the torsion spring index.

ilkhan posted:

Got the Nest (the basic Nest E model) hooked up today. Color me loving shocked - not only was there plenty of slack in the cable, but the old thermostat was mounted to a single gang box, instead of a cable coming out of a hole in the wall with the thermostat just screwed into the drywall. Which... the mounting plate for the Nest isn't designed for, of course. So it's held by 1 screw instead of 2. But that's good enough for me.

Had an initial issue with it bitching about the battery being dead, turned out there was a break in the red wire just under the insulation. Probably nicked when it was originally stripped.

angryrobots, on a whim I grabbed the electric bill and double checked my meter ESID. It was correct. Also commanded the AC off with the Nest app while watching the meter, and the meter immediately slowed way down. So I'm definitely being billed for the correct meter. But going by the bill and current meter reading, I've used nearly 500 kWh in a week. :stonk: I'm reaaaaaaaally hoping the billing cycle printed on the bill isn't the read date, otherwise I'm on my way to a $250+ electric bill.

The car I had in mind was the 68-72 A-body, which does have the shock inside the spring, but my understanding was that the coil bucket rested against the bottom of the frame whereas the shock mount was an additional (sturdy, I admit) piece welded over top.

I was looking at UMI's cornermax kits to see what that was all about, and it looks like it just bolts the coilover into the shock mount, if I'm looking at it right.

So, it seems to me like it's putting all the car's weight on that bracket instead of down on the bottom of the frame where it's meant to be. But I'm no ME, so maybe it's kosher? Just seems like it would over-stress that shock mount.

Yeah if those are now mounted on that smaller point with the shock mount where previously the spring sat up against the whole cup thing, that could definitely cause a problem. Even going to too stiff of springs or too low of a ride height can increase the forces enough to break shock towers when they are designed to have the weight of the car on them.

How the gently caress? Do you at least have a two-stage AC? If so, the old thermostat could have been running both stages whereas the nest will slowly learn which stage is needed for what weather and temperature setpoint.

I'm super miffed that I don't have a Nest in this place. I know it's just a tiny apartment, but the Nest was really, really loving smart in both my last house and townhouse about how to use the AC for maximum efficiency. It learned how to use the circulating fan, which stage (both places had two stage heatpumps/cooling) was best for the demand, and how the weather affected how much it needed to pre-cool the place (and would kick in the bigger stage if needed on a hot cloudless day versus maybe only the small one for a cooler, overcast day). It was also connected to our power company's account, meaning I could tell Nest which hours were more expensive so it would calm the gently caress down during that time and plan appropriately. Went from 250+ bills to $105 bills when averaged out once it got set. Baller stuff.

I've got a Sensibo now, got for $80 on Prime Day. It bills itself as a budget Nest-alike for in-wall and window air conditioners, but it isn't at all. I mean, it's still baller to be able to control the in-wall AC with my phone, and set schedules, but the geofencing is broken and there's a massive delay between button press -> action, which is my biggest beef with all "smart home" devices anyway.

I had better reliability setting an IFTTT recipe to shut the AC off when I disconnected from my wireless LAN than relying on the Sensibo app's internal geofencing/location awareness, and that's after I went into battery settings and exempted it from power saving. Plus the Sensibo app would freak out sometimes and rapid-fire on-off-on-off-on-off commands to the AC when I was on the geofence's edge, like at a stop light by the apartment.

However! It does work with LCD remote ACs, which no other product that I tried (and returned) did. Most LCD remote ACs don't send basic "temp up, temp down, AC off, AC on" commands, like a TV remote. Instead, whenever you press the button, it sends a super long command that includes the status of every parameter. This means that you can hold your finger over the remote emitter with the AC off, turn it "on" with the remote, set the fan speed, set oscillation or whatever, and adjust temp down to 75. On the last button press, like with the temperature change, you can point the remote at the AC, and it'll turn on and set all of those settings at once that you were futzing with while out of sight. That's nice for the Sensibo because it doesn't need to "sync" its status with the AC or anything, like a lot of other products I tried. Unfortunately this also means that it can't act as a live thermostat, either. It can only really be used for remote control and scheduling.

Oh jesus, that was a huge gripe I had with my portable AC unit. You could change settings on the remote out of sight, then the next time you hit a button on it within view of the AC, it'd change everything all at once over a few seconds. Tons of fun if I fell asleep with the remote next to me on the couch or bed. Ate batteries like a motherfucker too.

No, single stage AC - the place is old enough (2004) that dual stage wasn't common in multifamily housing yet unless the developer was shooting for some kind of tax credit - and I'm sure the wiring isn't here to support multistage. I'm also just baaaarely outside of Austin itself in one of the smaller suburbs (by less than a mile), and several miles outside of Travis county (most of Austin is inside of Travis... Travis isn't complaining, last I heard :v:), so a lot of the environmentally friendly feel good laws and regulations Austin is known for go out the window here. I'm not sure if it's R-22 or R-154a R-410a yet - I know I have one of the newest condensers on the building, and there's some blue spray paint on the lines and on top of the unit itself (I know a lot of apartment complexes will tag 154a units with spray paint to differentiate what kind of refrigerant they use). I just haven't bothered going out there to look at the stickers on it. But I looked at the bill again; the "end" date for the cycle was the date the bill was mailed. It's not a massive power co-op (308,000 meters going by their website), but I would think they need at least a few days lead time to print and mail bills.

I know my power company in DFW took a week to get a bill to me online after the meter read, with another few days for the bill to show up in the mail. But that was a deregulated area where you could choose your own retail provider. Most of Austin is served by Austin Energy, and a small chunk of the suburb I'm in is also served by them (not my part, though). Either way, it's all public utilities here instead of "choose your own retail company, where you might get billed 4c/kwh or 50c/kwh, where you might get shut off for being 5 minutes late paying your bill".

I'm not sure how well Nest's geofencing works now. I'm sure it'll work fine on GF's phone (Samsung Galaxy S7), no clue on my phone (Essential PH-1 running Android Pie - both phones completely stock). It was iffy last time I tried it (Nexus 6P, but it was rooted). Also don't know how long it takes to go into away mode once we're gone; I checked on it 30 minutes after we left earlier and it was still on home, so I manually put it on eco until we were on our way home. The cats stay locked in the bedroom when we're not here, so they wouldn't be tripping the occupancy sensor on the Nest itself (they're locked up because they're destructive assholes even with all the toys in the world; same reason there's nothing with a cord in the bedroom :sigh:).

I'm thinking I may look into switching to the time-of-use billing, but the superpeak rates just flat out scare me (... not that the flat 12c/kwh we pay now is that much better). And we'd have to get a meter swap for that.
