Disc swapping was cool because when you got a big game with lots of discs it felt like you were about to delve into something epic. I think one of the reasons FF9 caught me as much as it did is that it came on four discs and it felt like I was jumping into giant expansive world.

You can probably recreate the effect by having a “Would you like to save?” prompt after a climactic scene.

Command & Conquer had a GDI disc and a NOD disc.

Come to think of it, disc swapping was good for narrative and referential purposes now that people mention it. As well as campaigns for things like the aforementioned.

yeah but it's still a design choice in a world where you can just give people 150gb games. in disc games they had to budget disc space and when they realized they were going over their 640mb they had to break out what assets are going to be shared between discs and which are going to be inaccessible on disc 2, and then at that point you have to answer the question of why that thing doesn't exist anymore. most of the time that means the disc change is linked to something really substantial happening in the story

For me it's some of this, and as a kid I had two friends who also played JRPGs and since we'd get new ones roughly at the same time, we'd end up in a loose race to finish them. Being the first to cross the threshold to a new disc was major bragging rights.

Games chat, I need your help. I've got some tendinitis in my right hand so I'm trying to avoid using it if at all possible. So for now I've just been using the mouse in my left hand. I'm looking for suggestions of games that only use the mouse are very slow-paced.

Here's my steam game list: https://steamcommunity.com/id/fanaticalmilk/games/?tab=all

Trails in the Sky is definitely a game that you can play with one hand, you could even remap the keyboard controls to like wasd + E/C/Space and not have to use the mouse at all.

i'm kind of baffled at how much of, an actual legit metal gear game ghost babel is, on the gameboy color

like it's obvious that they kind of compromised with giving it a level-based structure but at the same time that kind of saves it from the curse of constant backtracking without losing the fun sense of exploration and everything else feels decently up to par with earlier metal gear

It is legitimately a great Metal Gear game, and tbh the level structure fits pretty well with the structure of something like Metal Gear Solid 1 where technically it was open world with the potential for backtracking but you didn't do that much at all save for one part in particular, and I imagine you could pretty easily break up MGS1 into separate levels like what Ghost Babel had. There was also some bonus radio show thing you could tune into on your codec but that was Japanese only iirc and idk if it was ever translated and if it was tied into the story at all or if it was just a neat bonus thing.

Accordion Man posted:

As I said, technically, because the events of Ghost Babel never happened in the MGS continuity, its just a simulation. I also like the fan theory that Twin Snakes was Raiden's simulation of Shadow Moses, hence why its more embellished and over the top compared to the original PS1 version.

I like the fan theory that Twin Snakes is a movie adaptation based off of Nastasha Romanenko's book about what happened during the Shadow Moses incident.

Weird, Cosmic Star Heroine was listed on PSN for $0 last night and I bought it, have it downloaded on my PS4, and apparently this has happened before

I guess I'll play it before Sony revokes it from my account.

Some games you can play with just a mouse:

Puzzle Quest: Bejeweled with RPG elements.

Legend of Grimrock 1&2: Dungeon crawler; possible if you enable a disability option, though it's a more difficult game w/o wasdqe. Maybe lower the difficulty.

The XCOM games are turn-based and I can't think of any reason why you would need KB.

The Flame in the Flood seems like it was made to work on tablets or something, so that should work with one hand. Lite survival game.

Bomber Crew: FTL-ish game except you fly a rad ww2 bomber and also seems made for mobile.

Death Road to Canada: I think there's options for 1h play? Not sure about this one but I just remembered that it also had a mobile version. Neat Oregon Trail-style game with great music and some actually good humor.

Other games that probably work just fine: Civ, Darkest Dungeon, VA-11 Hall-A, Kingsway, Papers Please, Your Favorite Anime Porno Steam VN

Christ on a cracker, this

I played SO2 to death to the point the item creation sound, battle voice clips, and the music still just randomly float through my thoughts here and there

SO3 was the most anime puke trash bad game I had to suffer through, gave up after the mines and tossed the game, was not surprised by the lovely twist when I found out later online

wild arms 3 has some of the best presentation of this stuff ive seen, the game doesnt start the opening animation and stuff until you actually load a save and if you save and quit it plays an ending animation, and after each major story arc the opening and ending change, so its like watching three seasons of an anime or something, really does a good job delineating parts of the story

at least nightmare castle's most annoying parts are optional, in exchange for the penultimate boss having seven forms instead of one

in fact, if you skip all the nightmare puzzles, then disaster luck's speech at the beginning of the fight is actually informative instead of not making any sense at all
