Fist of the North Star got a demo on PS4 today and it's... good?
I was expecting mediocre God Hand after watching a trailer but instead they've recycled the Yakuza engine with all the weird poo poo that entails. For most of the demo Kenshiro and Bat fart about a dusty shithole trying to scrounge up parts for a car. The town has a bunch of stores, cafes and even an arcade. There's also a nightclub that's being run by Kenshiro for some reason.
Combat is also similar to Yakuza but a bit snappier and with more dudes exploding. I think I might actually have to get this.

this is poo poo, and probably a lazy fix for the fact that magic armor makes all the other CC useless most of the time when it would be helpful

Take the talent that gives you magic crits based on your crit rate. Pick a human spellcaster and load him up with crit boosting gear. You can get 80%crit chance by mid game. Magic armor gets blasted right off.

Yeah it's super surprising to see all these Yakuza similarities for a game that is intentionally designed to be like Yakuza, being a Yakuza spin-off.

That does sound promising.

The problem with the Dynasty Warrior type FotNS games is that once you exploded the first hundred or so random dudes, the novelty is lost.

The main appeal of the manga/anime was always watching groups of roided out baddies try to push around Kenshiro because he looked none threatening, and then seeing their reaction when he eventually punches one of them in the face and their entire head swells up and pops like a zit.

It's not a Dynasty Warriors-like. You walk around a map doing poo poo and pick fights with mooks. It's very much a Yakuza game.

To be fair I'd watched two trailers beforehand and they only contained brawling that looked a bit like God Hand.

Anyway, I hope the driving is better than the demo made it seem. The controls felt iffy and having to stop to have a fight if someone as much as nudges you seems irritating.

I haven't played any of their other games but their DLC practices for EU4 are extremely good. New free content is released alongside paid content, often both change the game in substantial ways, and if you don't like the new free stuff you can always roll back your game version. Older paid content goes on sale all the time. There are no lootboxes.

What's the Stellaris DLC model like?

Exactly the same as EU4's, some nerdlingers just think Paradox is obligated to add new content to their games for 7 years after release with no compensation.

I really don't like that poo poo. It costs money to pay people to come up with new content because nobody is going to work for free. As long as they aren't bending us over the barrel for a season pass they can easily afford to pay a few bucks for it.

Not an unpopular opinion here but elsewhere if I ever say a developer should get paid for coming up with DLC people overreact to what I'm saying.

I don't care whether or not it's free, it's more so about the insane feature creep and bloating the poo poo out of their games while taking ages to fix mechanical issues or serious bugs, all the time sharting out more and more DLC that is highly inconsistent in quality and ends up breaking the game even more half the time, especially if the cocktail of DLCs you DO have aren't a good mix and the game suffers serious balancing issues because you bought two of the four pieces of DLC you'd need in total to make sure the game actually functions in some coherent sense.

It's just an absolute pain in the rear end realizing you're essentially never going to play a complete, polished game, instead you're doomed to some kind of Frankenstein abomination that keeps getting fifteen dollar body parts smacked onto it.

Also the AI in almost all their major titles is poo poo, but that's more an issue with 4X and Grand Strategy titles in general, makes playing them pointless, who cares if you have 5,000 different ways to defeat your opponent if he's a drooling imbecile that can be pushed over with a fart.

Stellaris is great except when you need to land armies on planets. The tediousness of building land armies, escorting them to the planet you want to invade, and then babysitting them while they fight is so goddamn dull, especially when late game empires can have like hundreds of planets and you still have to manage your combat fleets around.

I don't have the expansion where you can just blow up planets but I could see myself quickly going overboard with it.

Paradox sucks, they make broken basic spreadsheet managers which they then proceed to break even further, also if you want the thing you bought to not look like a freeware game from 2002, you better pay up for twenty cosmetic DLCs so it looks like Medieval Total War played on lowest settings instead.

It's like Lenin said
The thing that kills Stellaris for me is the lack of victory conditions or goals for a truly peaceful, isolated species. Last time I played the game is still entirely focused on consuming the map, either personally or with a federation. There needs to be a science victory where you digitize your entire population, or an engineering victory where you set off to explore another galaxy with a HyperMegaDrive generational ship or something.

My unpopular opinion is that The Witcher 3 is the most overrated game ever made. I've tried to get into it on three occasions and it still hasn't took yet. The dialogue is superb but everything else is mediocre and done better in other games. Horse control is better in Metal Gear Solid V, exploration in almost any other RPG because marking all the points of interest for free leaves no actual exploration to do, and worst of all the combat is just lame and impossible to enjoy coming from Nioh which has an infinitely superior combat system. The menus also suck. It also has no dinstinctive look or art style to speak of. While it's objectively good looking, going for realism in the environment in a fantasy RPG was a bizarre choice.

Any game that tries to go for a "realistic" look in their 3D graphics ends up looking like an unconvincing heap of poo poo that looks like shiny meat and is always right in the uncanny valley. This has gotten worse as games got "better" 3D graphics.

I never took to W3 much, but I'm just not into high fantasy or open world stuff at all. I tried. I gave it 40 hours or so and my opinion never improved, so I deleted it.

From then on I always bought big games on disc, because even if I didn't like it I might as well make sure I can gift it or loan it to a friend.
