they told me back under collectivization their village was "same as africa"

now they are proud of the fact 20% of the household in their village own an automobile, their village has transformed into a prosperous little town since decollectivization at the beginning of the 1980s

they also have a lot of faith in General Secretary Xi's promises to correct inequality and corruption

I know this is tankie internet forum with 20 ppl posting about how leftist they are but let's face it: you posters would never, ever voluntarily work as part of a people's agricultural production brigade for any longer than is necessary to virtual signal what good leftists you guys are

the village actually resembles demographic patterns you would see in US for rural areas: very disproportionately people over ~40, very few young people over 18-40

What is socialism and what is Marxism? We were not quite clear about this in the past. Marxism attaches utmost importance to developing the productive forces. We have said that socialism is the primary stage of communism and that at the advanced stage the principle of from each according to his ability and to each according to his needs will be applied. This calls for highly developed productive forces and an overwhelming abundance of material wealth. Therefore, the fundamental task for the socialist stage is to develop the productive forces. The superiority of the socialist system is demonstrated, in the final analysis, by faster and greater development of those forces than under the capitalist system. As they develop, the people's material and cultural life will constantly improve. One of our shortcomings after the founding of the People's Republic was that we didn't pay enough attention to developing the productive forces. Socialism means eliminating poverty. Pauperism is not socialism, still less communism.

and yeah I could do it now, if I wanted to make minimum wage or less while mostly producing a bunch of soy or corn for subsidies. That's lame though.

Its past 9pm and I just woke up for my night shift of scraping drunks off the pavement. I'm in the hole $100 every month unless I pick up shifts and hate my commute, my diet and my bosses. I grow mountains of plants in my free time to stave off depression. Farm work would probably be too hard tho

Family farms are deeply overrated.

Farm work wouldn't be so bad if it was treated like an actual workplace and not a glorified gulag/grey area off the grid operation where your boss is your insane stepdad.

At this point, the actual work on the farm has mostly been automated away. The work that is left for people in the area of agriculture is basically factory work. Tending machines that bag frozen peas and raspberry puree, moving it all around with forklifts.

In my neck of the woods, there is no jobs in the feilds. It only takes 2 people to run a berry picking machine. Or a combine and dump truck. All the jobs are at the processing plants in town.

there're no such thing as raspberries or mechanical pickers after the revolution, only sorghum fields

Moving raspberries on a forklift sounds idyllic compared to hanging chickens upside down on the throat cutting machine.

thats why im not working on one now. there's local co-op farms around too but they basically survive on the well-honed co-op practice of being your own boss and exploiting yourself instead of other workers

I shared a flat with this guy at kibbutz el-rom in Israel for a month or so and this thread is exactly spot-on about his behaviors.

He's mid-twenties, getting his PhD in Biblical studies (like researching the accuracy of translations) and has had 3 girlfriends in his entire life.

After work he would come to the volunteer lounge and hop on the computer and play Cybernations all day and chat non-stop in IRC. At work he would bitch to me nonstop about how every other worker was lazy and useless and not to be trusted. Except that they were all good workers and not lazy. They were just from South America and Jeremiah HATES HATES HATES South Americans.

He would also talk to me at great length in great detail about his life. He was kicked out at 19 for playing too many video games by his mother. He still has not forgiven her for that. He loves Quebec and everything French because they make him feel better about himself and is an absolute human being.

I hated everyday living with him and I loving knew one day he would get his call out. gently caress you Jeremiah, everyone hates you
