There are several factors that limit cloud/virtualization of small businesses, including but not limited to
-By not having an IT person, they may not even be aware it's an option.
-If they know it's an option, they may be scared because it's new and different
-If they're open to new and different, they may be cost-adverse. Why spend $xxx/month when that secondhand server my kid got from an estate sale for $300 still works?

And so on.

Proofpoint + a giant [Ext] on the front of any outside emails seems to work pretty well for us. Also the way Proofpoint modifies(mangles the poo poo out of) URLs means that even if they realize a link is spurious after the fact, they can tell you YO, A USER CLICKED ON THIS BEFORE WE KNEW IT WAS BOGUS.

You are correcto. Every year someone at our office brings up VDI and in no scenario does it make sense. Granted we are a ~200 person company with two locations, but the costs and headaches involved are not at all worth it.

VDI's ok as long as you know that anyone on VDI isn't a power user.

Sure beats "Bad hard drive? That sucks. You're without a PC for a week while we spin up a change control, order replacement parts, deploy an image, do inventory data work, get the ok from Info Sec to re-deploy, and pay our staff mileage and suffer time lost on important poo poo."

The number of rebuilds and re-entitlements we do per day easily makes up the yearly licensing costs (and reduced staff count).

When we were virtualizing sites the ones that weren't virtualized needed site visits at least once a week, with VDI they're down to once every couple months

Our VDI infrastructure sucks, which is doubly bad because they just refreshed it.

It was fine for a little while, now it takes like a minute just to load a skype meeting.

Isn’t there a setting in Chrome to do that? I’m not sure about Edge/IE, but Firefox and Safari offer to restore open tabs if they quit suddenly due to log out or reboot.

I use two VDIs on the daily and they're decently fast. Don't ever notice a difference between it and rdp to be honest. We also refresh profiles / vms nightly unless you've logged in during the previous x number of hours.

I've gotten used to nothing being persistent and enjoy the nihilistic emptiness of my workstation every morning.

She won't let the other ladies in the office who cover the front desk sit in her chair, use her computer, or use the front desk receptionist phone (with the button boxes etc on it)

Insane that management allows that to happen. What other company has a front desk that has two phones/computers and only one person uses each, and they aren't even there the same day?

We run a giant Citrix implementation. I think something like four netscalers, two (soon to be four)16 blade chassis.

I get these tickets very rarely, and it usually only happens when the customer's incredibly pushy and the call center just wants to make him go away. The customers evidence of latency is "Request timed out" messages when running a traceroute to twitch and world of warcraft.

Don't get me wrong, I think ISP's are horrible and malicious and my company is just as bad as the rest of them but holy poo poo you know this guy is going to spend the rest of his life poo poo talking his ISP when the truth is he's trying to stream on an underpowered PC and he's an idiot.

Eventually management got involved and all of his calls went directly to a supervisor. Coincidentally he cancelled his service shortly after he stopped getting people to remote in.

Teamviewer has an option to automatically disable the wallpaper when you connect remotely. Officially it's to reduce bandwidth requirements, but not seeing the nonsense users put there (regardless of why they're doing it) is a great secondary benefit.

No more 640x480 photos of ugly babies stretched across a 1080p display.

When I worked retail computing, I had a guy come in with an old white MacBook. Needed some RAM, so I asked him to boot it up so I could make sure of what he had and get him the right stuff. It fires up, a web browser is open, so I minimize it. The dude's wallpaper was a woman, a not particularly attractive woman, striking a very Captain Morgan pose and shot from a slightly low angle. Totally naked. With what appeared to be a substantial weight in various rings and jewelry pierced into her nether regions. Ever the professional, I just whipped the machine around on the counter so no one else could see it and looked up what I needed to look up.

People are trash.

We have direct peering with them which makes the whole thing even better. The entire traceroute is a whopping 7 hops and only 1 of them times out.

Nah dude I'm pretty sure if our peering had any sort of issues down we'd know in seconds, but sure it's your ISP and not your poo poo rear end computer.

It was a wonderful disaster when the lawfirm was gearing up to put everyone on a citrix desktop. Everything about law software barely works in a full machine and broke a million ways in a locked down virtual desktop. Thankfully we only got maybe 100 out before someone figured out it simply wasn't happening.

Consumer support is always a gong show. With phone support between people having sex when calling, cam girls trying to get me to "test their stream to make sure it works" or people shooting their laptops to get a replacement for accidental damage as it being slow didn't qualify.

To in person stuff when a PC is so loaded with malware and a browser history full of kink, the minefield of who to have the conversation with so you don't destroy a marriage, or having to crawl under a desk, looking up and regretting looking up. Also opening up a PC and finding two cats worth of cat hair covered in nicotine from the guys 3 pack a day habit.


As frustrating as corporate can be, I just look back to my consumer days to remind myself it's not that bad.
