the whole point im trying to make, is people dismiss liberals and social democrats. but the act of labeling people this way often creates situations where they are dismissed entirely, but people and their politics change and can be changed, especially through the course of class struggle. is alexandria occassio cortez a liberal? are her supporters? is the DSA? if she is, is she no different than elizabeth warren? or barack obama? or hillary clinton? the reality is all of these individuals could rightly be called liberals, but there are huge and substantive differences between them, their base, and how working people view them. some individuals, even liberals, present opportunities to work with and even possibly to change their views. if you think trotsky is poo poo fine, read lenin or mao or whoever you want, any successful revolutionary will tell you the same thing

that's a pretty basic point that you're weirdly treating like some great revelation. i think we all know it, but we also know this isn't really a space for recruitment and is more of a place to blow off steam. if people are engaging in that behavior publicly then that's a different story but i doubt most of the people here need a lecture on how to have a normal conversation *remembers larry posts here* wait never mind. carry on

the only person asking if there’s a difference between soc dems and libs here is you. nobody is saying don’t work with libs when necessary, but we shouldn’t at the same time pretend that we don’t have a revolutionary outlook which will permanently sideline liberals from power. you can’t just pretend there is no antagonism, as if at some point you’re going to spring the revolutionary program and they’re all going to go along with it. this is just another appeal for entryism.

I was confused why people were so passionate about hating that milquetoast Kilpatrick article so I sent it to my sister to get her feedback. She mostly supported the idea behind it, but wanted to know why they had a person who obviously never interacts with working class people write it. I've been laughing about this all day because she doesn't read Jacobin or know any of the Kilpatrick drama at all. It's super on brand for Jacobin that the only way to get a positive mention of East Germany is in a badly written article where it's a peripheral topic. Anyway, the correct reason we should all still be pissed off at Jacobin right now is that hit piece on the Communist Party of the Philippines.

The biggest difference I see between your Ocasio/Sanders-esque liberal and the type represented by mainstream Democrats is that the former, through embracing basically the furthest left ideology that exists within the mainstream, have shown themselves to be the type of person who might be receptive to even more left-wing ideology if that ideology became more well-known and comparatively mainstream.
