You already can, there's just intermediate steps between a store page and the titan.

And it's already hilarious, like the casino idiot.

All in all though, this was not the worst company that could have bought out CCP. No western games publisher was gonna give them the amount of money they were looking for, it's obvious that Eve is not going to make that back. So that leaves yet another investor group, in which case things continue to gradually get worse. Or one of the cash-flush asian companies.

Asian companies aren't all bad -- for all the exploitative P2W stuff they're also willing to try weird poo poo. I think it'll either be a quick death of P2W bullshit or something completely unexpected. Tencent would have been the best though. They have so much loving money, they could have bought CCP and paid for some real change.

I think half the existing champions being useless and needing a rework had more to do with that.

Still, a 5x multiple on revenue isn't astronomical. Recurring revenue is better than transactional revenue, so I wonder if they have genuinely new ideas on how to increase the size of the player base.

They could make a substantial increase of the player base if they create a mobile client. EVE is an old enough game that it could likely run on a lot of tablets and cell phones, and there are a lot of activities that don't require a perfectly precise interface. They just made a mobile version of their Black Desert game too, so this is a good possibility.

I hope that is their strategy. They paid a lot for EVE, so they may be looking very long term. It's not likely the could recover $500m by milking EVE with lovely P2W until it dies, the game would collapse too quickly. EVE has a very large play space (because its all one shard) the game needs a certain base level of players or the large galaxy will feel very empty. So hopefully they make changes that are aimed at bringing in new players, rather than changes to try and drain more blood from the current subscribers.

I've never been interested in doing market trading, but if they allowed it on mobile, I might actually give it a try. I have long commutes so it would be perfect.

I don't know if the North Koreans would run the game better or worse. They likely wouldn't fill the game with tons of micro transactions, but they might have problems with the market mechanics.

one of the things i wouldn't be surprised to see from them is a "spend x money/plex to instantly complete an industry job" cause that's a super standard microtransaction in pretty much every game where you build stuff. im kinda curious how quickly the economy would just fall over if they do and aryth goes hogwild pumping out titans or whatever every 5 minutes

Yeah, something like this is what I'm worried about more than any crazy new "pay money to not show up in local" or whatever poo poo. Because 'pay to complete your crafting job faster' is a super common microtransaction that would be super easy to add and seems like it would have some pretty wild effects on EVE's economy.

Honestly, if they DO go through with that one, I suspect it would probably be better if it was real money only and not something you could buy with in-game currency.

Same thing with bottlenecked resource boosts/multipliers.

The dumb korean MMO style multiplasmid stuff was fine and if they keep going with that stuff I don't think it'll matter that much in the grand scheme of game balance unless they go absolutely nuts with it in bizarre and unforeseen ways.

Maybe I'm an idiot but I'm cautiously optimistic about the future.

My fear is that CCP will block especially egregious stuff like paying for combat buffs or cash shop only ships but will feel compelled to accept minor changes. There's tons of pay for convenience/qol microtransactions that are fine in their own game but would wreak havoc on eve because of how organic and interconnected the economy is. Pay money to instantly complete an industry job would wreck stuff like t2 reactions, a cash shop gathering buff/higher ratio of rare ores would throw the mineral economy out of whack, pay money to reset your JC timer, etc

edit: and I could totally see them either bringing back aurum or turning plex into an untradable cash shop only currency because obfuscating prices is like, microtransactions 101 and that would really gently caress over a lot of people.
