Basilisk sever has always around 1000 players, even though most are bots it is a steady population. Also you can find buffers (doctors, dancers and musicians) very easily. The market is not like when the game was live of course but you can find pretty much anything you need. Give it a try, it is free after all.

once I can find my disks, I'm going to give Stardust a try. It seems to have a lot of the features I'd opt for if I ruled the internet and could make the game my way. I honestly thought the CU did really well with combat in the game. I know it hosed crafting/non combat and blended professions into oblivion, but I believed it was on the right track for combat.

Questions for Levarris: your video hints at it, but is there the ever-elusive "third faction" here, or just more criminal themeparks? And besides adjusting HAM/SAC away from mind pools, have there been any major changes to crafting and resource collection? I'd like to do some light crafting of a sort, but SWG always scared me off from it due to the massive time input to do even the basics. Not looking for server-best anything, just bits and bobs (food, medical poo poo, etc).

Conskill

I got an 'F' in Geometry.
Speaking as someone else that likes "light crafting" over "omgwtf crafting" that SWG can devolve into, you could try to take a stab at manufacturing vehicles at Master Artisan. They require only two semi-specific materials (ferrous and non-ferrous metals) that only care about one attribute for the outcome (shock resistance), and the outcome itself is only HP so most people don't give much of a gently caress about squeezing out the absolute best mats for it.

Tailoring is another step up in complexity but also not horrific to get into.

I'd be hesitant to recommend tailoring as it generally requires both a stable population of people who really like dressing up in a constant stream of new styles and also individuals making use of tape slots.
Both of which are usually pretty low demand and also easy to quickly oversaturate the market with just one producer on low pop servers. It's a really fun crafting if you like social interaction though as some people get really into getting the perfect clothes.

No third faction, and no major changes to crafting. The main changes to stardust are about combat balance.

Cool, thanks all. Wasn't going to deter me either way, just curious. Found the disks.

I'll probably make a crafting character first, with combat on a side toon. I'll toodle around with it until I find a niche I like. Probably not weapon/armorsmith, since both of those require I sacrifice a goat and three children to the timelords to ever have a chance of even making something useful. But clothes, buildings, food or vehicles all might be interesting areas to explore.

EDIT: So I think I hosed something up. I can get the SWGEmu version to work, but for some reason, once I have all the files for Stardust downloaded and installed, the launch stalls out when I hit "play".

I'm pretty sure my mistake is with these instructions:

Follow the prompts: of the Installation Wizard, be sure to point it to a valid Star Wars Galaxies Client Folder.
Download the ModTheGalaxy TRE Files: from either of the following sources:
Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/open?id=14fDk10PYkqCK1ZVXpnAVh1UC3ONAWfUx
Mega Upload: https://mega.nz/#F!fw0EzZ4I!RfRwyqE859Ad3kGlQv7T4Q
Extract the ModTheGalaxy TRE Files: to the folder you specified for the Stardust Installation.

I've been pointing the Stardust launcher at the /StarWarsGalaxies folder, and same for the MTG TRE files. Is this right?

Two tips for the wise:
1. Buy an AK-97 assault rifle.
2. If there's someone hanging around your neighborhood you don't know, shoot him.
Stardust's population has taken a hit because of World of Warcraft and Destiny 2, but I'm enjoying it (and I play neither of those games). I've been looking for an SWG experience that wasn't 1:1 pre-CU and wasn't NGE (although it's easy to miss the great content NGE had)

Likes:

* Only one pool to damage (although bleeds affect the Action pool)
* You don't have to get buffed to do a lot of content (or wear armor!)
* No encumbrance on armor (see above)
* Composite isn't necessarily the best armor in the game (although it can be easier to make than others)
* The UI is like a cross between pre-CU and NGE - more colors!
* The new planets are cool lore-wise
* No logouts from inactivity
* 2x combat/weapon XP while grouped
* 2x crafting XP when practicing
* 6 characters per account, up to 3 logged in at once (if you can multi-instance, do it!)
* Not sure how a feature works or wondering if something is broken? Look in GitHub!
* As content-complete as stock SWGEMU gets (themeparks, DWB, Geonosian Cave, Force village, etc.)

Dislikes:

* All weapons of a particular type have the same speed, (e.g. pistols = 2, carbines = 3, etc.) so picking the best weapon is just a matter of the best damage range per damage type, leaving many weapons (even ones higher up the weaponsmith branches) useless
* The pool-based special attacks from pre-CU are here, but most are useless unless they apply specific states - just use Overcharge Shot
* With the absence of damaging different pools, Rifleman isn't very attractive now (and Conceal Shot doesn't work in SWGEMU anyway)
* The new planets don't have much to do besides lore, just a lot of very tough enemies
* There's hardly an economy
* Lack of people means no PvP (and almost everybody in-game has gone Imperial)
* Buffing of Health/Action is possible, but secondary stat buffs were removed - although food and spice can still affect them I think?
* New planets and reworked themeparks (because of the timeline change), but no new significant content, and "why does it work that way?" mechanics for existing quests aren't addressed
- Why do I have to drag items to Nym and his friends when other questgivers just take poo poo from me?
- Themepark escort missions still suck

About the economy, if you need something, just ask in the Discord and someone should be able to help you. We have the goon-run city Mos Alamos just south of the Rishi maze Lars Homestead, very nicely laid out. Some pubbies have set up shop on Corellia but their mayor has no urban planning skills.

Things I'd like to see added to SWGEMU in general:

* Conceal Shot!
* Better positioning of items in houses (i.e. pitch/roll) like NGE had - and copy doesn't even work at all
* Appearance tab!

Other things to know about Stardust:

* Imperial Themepark - go to Lok Imperial Outpost
* Jabba's Reelo's Themepark - go to the cantina in Hanna City on Chandrila
* Best place to profession grind: Jakku PvP zone - talk to a faction recruiter

I charged groups to take them on "Corvette tours" where they'd all wait at the spawn and I'd Jedi cloak and make my way through to complete the destroy mission. They'd all get AV-21 schematics, but I'd keep the loot of course.

I've virtually cornered the armor and weapons market, but I wouldn't mind a competitor or someone to pick up the slack if I'm not available. We have a goon DE but I don't think he's that active right now. We still have a relatively small population but there's always room for any crafting profession, even if you just want to play around and be self-sufficient (which is why I got into armor and weapons). Come on to the Discord and ask and see what others recommend.

It's a video about SWG, it's not going to get many views. But then I have only promoted it on the /r/swg subreddit.

The population is small, but it grows slowly every day. Currently between 50-60 are online concurrently on a daily basis, so yes. It is a small community, though it is ridiculously helpful. (something which seriously surprises me)

End game loot was pretty limited that's true, but there was some good drops besides Nightsisters in Dathomir (rancors didn't drop anything very good). Krayt Dragons in Tatooine dropped pearls and tissues for weapons and if you were very very lucky a great weapon, the DWB in Endor dropped custom weapons, armor and Jetpack parts, and there was a lab inside at the end of the bunker where an engineer could craft the Jetpack (not easy to get him there though). The Dark Jedi Master in Dath too dropped 25+ tapes, and there was the AT-AT for rebs at the prison that dropped Mando armor and other stuff I can't remember, tapes too probably. There was the Corvette mission that dropped the AV-21 and some custom weapons, and running Janta missions in Dantooine eventually, after a thousand Janta kills, would get you a poison knife.
But in general loot was pretty crappy in SWG, I remember I used to destroy most of the loot, not even try to sell.
