corn in the bible posted:I can't handle that kind of pressure, sounds like I should play DQ5 instead not everyone can handle the heat, i get it 5 and 8 are definitely the highest regarded in the series, I just have a weird affinity for 6 because I like Job Systems, its weird dreamlike atmosphere, and it's the first one I really got into. Every game from 3 on is generally considered to be Good (opinions are probably most mixed on 7 and 6) however and if you want fun and charming fantasy adventures you can't really go wrong with any of them. 3 and 9 don't have fun party members however, with all your characters being player generated

9 had actual armor models so you can play dress up and that alone makes it good. I did the tournament around 18 too and lost twice due to bullshit but still won in the end. The boss afterwards was a real wakeup call and my buds died a hell of a lot but still won the first time thanks to Rab using zing.

I think the phone version of 1 is weirdly charming because of how stripped down it is. You only have one character, you fight enemies one at a time, you can count the amount of places you can go on two hands, and because the grinding is almost gone you can beat it in like 6 hours. Still, it's probably best enjoyed as a novelty, seeing where the series started and all that.

Just got to the Venice town and the Spanish resort town and even though my PS4 struggles with framerate for both it's really impressive how gourgeous they manage to make both of these places. The commitment to the art style really makes outliers like these pop with color.

Poker is really boring but it's almost impossible not to eventually hit a big double or nothing streak and make 30-50k chips. Got 250k to buy out the rewards in like 45 min while watching a stream.

Harrow posted:Hm, in retrospect I wonder if I'd have preferred to have normal strength enemies but the "low level enemies don't give XP" option instead of having normal XP but stronger enemies. I wonder if that would've been a more fun balance for me. And that's not to say hardmode is that hard, but more that normal mode is just that easy. Now "hard" does seem just a little bit overtuned, but I'd put it nearer to normal dragon quest difficulty, especially given how quick the XP seems to roll in. If you're not familiar with the series, or aren't interested (It can be an exercise in patience) then sure. The XP limit will at least prevent you from COMPLETELY trivializing encounters and be a pretty reasonable middle ground. Infinity Gaia posted:So, the description in game is kinda vague, what does Charm DO exactly? I've never seen an enemy stop attacking due to BEAUTY or whatever it's talking about. Makes you more charming But seriously, it does just that. The higher the value, the more likely NPCs are to simply lose turns being completely enamored by any given character. SOME skills can also use charm as the modifier. Which? Well, some will be obvious. Others? I actually don't know of any, but in Dragon Quest IX there were performer classes, and a few of their damaging skills would do more damage with higher charm. SLIME QUEST TIPS Don't try to "play" Slime Quest. Simply auto the reels and come back later. If you made gains. Grats. If not. Try a different machine. Each 'day' the rates for each machine will vary. You "play" Slime Quest by finding which is predetermined to have better pay outs, and the basically AFK your token rewards. This is a little past midgame when you finally go up to Angri-La but I'm stuck and drat my grandpa is kicking my rear end really hard. I have that new move from the training that it was suggested to use against him but it did like 14 damage when I tried it -- is there a trick here or do I just need to play defensively? Honestly the only times I haven't had fun in this game is when it pits your hero solo against a boss, you just don't have access to a ton of the support moves that actually make combat fun and interesting

I legit don't get the Slime Quest slot machine other than it can be set to autoplay and so I guess you can let it slowly make coins for you over time if you don't want to take risks on poker or mindlessly tap away at the regular 1 or 10 coin slot machines?

I finally broke down and muted the in-game music entirely and just played a 90-track playlist of all orchestral DQ music that I found on Youtube looped to play in the background. It works really, really well but sometimes it's a bit jarring to have boss music when doing something mundane. Regardless, the music is so good I don't care. Here's the playlist for anyone interested. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4dfE_VOmvGtNM-p8siqyF-CaL1nEURYF

A little more experimenting, and "Reduced EXP from Easy Fights" is functionally irrelevant. Cheat Engine table got updated with Draconian options, so instead of continuing with my other file to test how the Low XP option might function as a sort of middle ground between Normal and Hardmode, I just toggled the options in my current playthrough. I despite all of the grinding I am doing be it for progression, or just curiosity (getting NPC drops), I am STILL gaining XP from current encounters, with only my hero being roadblocked. And I am certainly beyond the curve - what with more recent party members being a couple levels behind. Anyone debating switching back, there is no functional middle ground. Strongly recommend trying to stick through Hardmode, but time is a thing. If having progression discouraged from time to time really frustrates, just drop the setting. DQXI makes for a pretty good romp since they ditched the random encounter that would otherwise interrupt pacing in carefree exploration.

I'm kinda going at a slower pace than I usually do with new DQ games but every session is fun. Just did the part with Slayer of the Sands and that was a fun fight. Erik lived with just 1 HP at one point and that felt really dramatic.

I can't even remember what the boss music is which is a drat shame considering how good the other games were. It's pretty much this. Even setting aside how much of a shitbird he's turned out to be in other areas (and part of me feeling like I'm hurting others by even remotely giving him any kind of money), the idea that other composers or music teams can produce stuff like the Octopath OST or any of the Xenoblade OSTs or the shitload of hard work Masayoshi Soken does on FFXIV, as examples, and that gets touted as a major feature, and then Sugiyama rolls in with the unremarkable bullshit and recycled tracks in this thing and the idea that somehow it's just as acceptable for a major product to be scored like that as it is the other examples frankly borders on offensive. As someone who's appreciated The Video Game Music for a long time, the tracks themselves are... unobtrusive, I suppose, but they're hugely forgettable, and they in no way measure up to the love the rest of the game has been made with. (Oh, newer folks might miss this: a lot of the game's tracks are taken from older titles. Much moreso than previous main entries.) Saigyouji posted:Hit my first notable roadblock with Stronger Enemies. The Slayer of the Sands (level ~15 boss) just completely bodied me. Didn't even get a chance to get buffs off properly. Yeah, the Slayer can be rough on Dragonian mode. First, it can be a good idea to get to 16 - Serena learns Midheal at that point, and that can help a lot. Make sure everyone has 2-3 Strong Medicines and don't be afraid to use them. Also get some Sleeping Hibiscuses from gathering spots - keeping it slept is a good idea. On that note, consider taking Erik into Knives, at least for this - with Persecutter, he can hit a Sapped Slayer for 200+ damage. It has upwards of 900 HP, so you want to be able to do real big damage. Speaking of, consider trying to build up to the Hero-Erik-Veronica triple tech - it deals a shitload of damage over multiple turns and is how I ended up killing it. The main trick is keeping Veronica alive long enough.

lets hang out posted:What are people doing with Sylvando? I know I want Hustle Dance. Are whips alright? I'd like to use them because I'm not with anyone else I put Sylv on the sidelines since anything he can do, someone else can do better. Maybe it changes later in the game, but his niche seems to be status effects (which I guess Charm effects maybe?), but enemies don't live long enough to use status effects on and bosses (I assume) are immune to them. In most normal fights, you can use Veronica's Boom family of spells or twin boomerang Erik to clear things out quick, with Jade and Hero doing single target damage if necessary. It's pretty disappointing he doesn't get Twin Dragon Lash since that would have given him a damage move. It's the same problem I have with Rab. In a game where you can freely swap dudes in and out during combat, hybrids are inherently weaker.

For my money, Sylvando is very useful in Dragonian Trial Hard Monster mode. Having Oomph out of the gate alone makes him incredibly useful, and his personal trees are stuffed with useful abilities, and he has access to three weapon types. He's very much Mr. Buffs and Status Effects, and in Hard Monster mode, that's damned useful, especially when pushing into the unknown or fighting bosses.

For Dragon Quests to try: 1 is historic and quick to beat so might as well. If you want to play Dragon Quest Builders, this is a good one to play first. 2 has some real issues but has its fans. It also ties into Dragon Quest Builders 2, I think. 3 is a great game if a bit dated. 4 is great for its characters. People seem to either love or hate the chapter system. 5 is very good but also very depressing. 7 is good if you want a game to last a very long time. 8 is generally very well regarded. I haven’t played 6, 9, or 10 (the MMO) so can’t comment on those.
