I like this game chill, but not asleep I regretted not starting with it at first but by the point where you get a full party together I found boss fights to be comfortably tricky enough to keep me on my toes. I can usually leave it on autobattle with normal mob encounters though and I like it that way

I'm looking forward to swapping people in and out just for kicks later on. yeah also you don't "wipe" on a battle unless literally every party member dies, if the 4 you have in are all gone it'll switch in backups automatically

I'm stumped by a quest. Just after you get access to sailing around the world and do a chain that includes a little boss, mermaid wants me to find the little boy she heard singing from a ship with Gondolia painted on it? I've asked all bards I could find, checked with key old people because mermaids live quite a while, checked with Sylv, not getting anywhere. Not far enough in progression? Sounds like I should have the answer right under my nose.

Jade and Rab were 5-6 levels higher than my crew when they joined up.

Generally I avoid difficulty that ups stats in turn based games since it's just making you grind more for the same result. Only when they have brand new movesets do I even consider.

Perfect Potato posted:He's pound for pound the most reliable magic user in the game (speed issue is trivial to fix with the skill panel and gear) and can effortlessly fill in for Veronica and makes Serena redundant (not that Sylvando with Hustle Dance didn't already do that for most of the game), I don't know what that other guy is on I'd rather have Veronica in normal battles since she does more damage from the Boom line and I'd rather have Serena in boss battles since she heals more and the Hymn abilities help to prevent elemental damage, although admittedly this has never really been an issue. Not that Rab isn't viable and that attack all ability is pretty good for him, but I get the feeling it'll get obsoleted by end game, although I'm not sure how well it scales or if it gets some plot upgrade.

I've always loved the DQ games. Got my first start with baby's first RPG in Dragon Warrior 1, loved DQ7 and DQ8. Can't wait to play thorugh this on Hard mode. Is there any benefit for hardmode or is it just for more difficult enemies?

Rab’s real issue is just that he’s super boring until you find out that the huge backpack he’s been lugging around is literally just full of old porno mags

I know the feeling, but I think it works well in this game; it's not 'grind more until you have an equally easy time' since that'd take, like, forever. It's 'you may actually have to use debuffs and status ailments (the latter especially) in some tougher regular fights, and a dungeon might take more than one run to go through it.' Similar to the NES DQ games. Obviously, if that's not your bag, it's not your bag, but due to the way stat/enemy progression works in this game I think you'd have to be like twice the level to make it as difficult as on the standard difficulty.

A Sinister Rap posted:I think the phone version of 1 is weirdly charming because of how stripped down it is. You only have one character, you fight enemies one at a time, you can count the amount of places you can go on two hands, and because the grinding is almost gone you can beat it in like 6 hours. The mobile version is honestly probably the best version of the original for casual play. It adds in the convenience of the SNES/GBC remakes and blends the translations of the NES and current generation of games. Plus its short enough that it doesn't have time to really wear out its welcome.

On the subject of goofiness, it's also good to see the series is still as on point as ever about regularly pulling 180s and having surprisingly effective emotional scenes with typically corny stuff like love and family and friends. Dragon Quest always has such a good attitude and it's genuinely heartwarming that it's still going strong with it.

Never played a DQ game before and happen to be looking for something new to play. I saw the new one was released on Steam. The only JRPGs I’ve played are Xenoblade Chronicles and Persona series. I loved both of them. Would I enjoy this as well?

Dragon Quest has very straightforward turn-based combat and is very light-hearted; it's pretty different from Persona in most ways.

Something I'm noticing is that your crafting skill doesn't at all keep up with the recipe difficulty after a certain point. I'm basically failing everything I make now because there just isn't enough focus in the pool to get everything finished.

It's goofy on the surface but there's a ton of depth underneath. For the record the first jrpg I ever really loved was Persona 3 and this takes things to a whole different level.

Use multibash to start. 4 bashes (albeit random, but who cares at the start) for 7 focus is really good efficiency. Use the rest of the fluorishes when multibash starts getting risky. There's a bit of a luck element to it, but using multibash really helped.
