I'm going to have to get some additional canned food and water if it continues toward Raleigh. We might have downed trees and power for some weeks.

It'll be interesting to see how people here do the hurricane dance.

I was scheduled for a work trip this week starting in Savannah this evening and ending in Richmond on Friday. Just cancelled it. Not getting in the way of that one.

All the while, the remnants of Gordon knocked out power here this morning, just turned back on.

And then spent three hours shredding four large debris piles into the size of a small trailer. If it fits, it shreds. One of the better 300 bucks I've spent, saves me the hire and / or tip disposal fees..... And I'll def use this thing more than twice. Plus there is something just so satisfying about feeding in 4 meter branches and seeing them sucked in and munched. It claims to reduce garden waste to 1/10th it's original size whiiiiich.... actually seems about right.

So I know we have some tech nerds in this forum, what's the best watt hour/dollar battery something you folks would recommend? The last time a big storm ripped through where I am we were without power for 3 weeks, and it's been 15 years since then so we need our phones/ a low power laptop for as long as we can. I was looking at a ups, but I'm really bad at electrical poo poo so I doubt I'm doing the conversions right, and I don't know if a ups would do what I actually want anyway.

I bought one of these for $99 on sale. Came in real handy during the last hurricane. You can recharge it via you vehicle also, if you do it carefully.

Sims and dickpanther can confirm that it will crank a SBC in the wastelands of Nebraska too.

Let's assume I'm an absolute idiot, how would one charge this from a car? Just reverse the leads while the car is off and baby it for a bit? We've got three cars with batteries less than a year old here, and realistically we only need one to drive during this poo poo.

And I'm definitely picking up a big honking anker battery pack, I love those things and gift them to all my relatives the second they complain about phone battery life.

How much stuff do you want to power, and for how long? If its just phones and a intermittent usage laptop you don need a ton.

The wife would rather die than go without her vape, so that's ~18 watt hours daily. I'd assume she'll end up watching about a movie a night (which means I'll have to clone the plex library to her laptop), and both of our phones just to keep up with work/family poo poo. Personally after all this blows over I'll be chopping up everything that falls, drinking, and roasting whatever I can find in the freezer on a fire before it goes bad.

ilkhan

Transfer the movies early, or at least onto an external HDD. Phones and the vape aren't much, so a decent sized battery should be fine for those. Depends on how much power the laptop draws and how much she wants to use it. A couple hours a night isn't a ton, but getting an AC source from the battery will mean getting a good sized option.

This may seem insane but I got it as habit from growing up in a rural area with lovely cars: I keep a car battery around on a tender as a backup. Either a backup for jumping my car if something craps out, or to use for electronics.

Now, with the modern age and universal 5V lithium packs like the Anker I have/linked, it's decidedly less useful, but I've still got an optima yellowtop chilling on a tender ready to power the UPS if I ever need it.

I can get a day out of my cheapo UPS running a modem and router. The fiber station is next door, so in theory as long as their generator fires up and the lines aren't damaged I'm good.

Came in handy today as we didn't have power for most of it.

Can always run out to the car to charge laptops and cell phones and use the LTE hotspot there too.

The reviews for that jump box linked above stated that someone ran a cpap off of it for a few nights and it was still decently charged. The cpap machines I've found ran around 30 watts, which is a bit more than my thin laptop pulls playing local movies. Between the jump box and the battery bank I doubt I'll have to run a car to recharge them unless things go to hell and we go weeks without power again.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the help.

Maybe during all this I'll actually work on my car, instead of poo poo posting on a car forum.

So we're building a house, and to do that we need to demolish the existing one. One can't just do that, you need a demolition permit.

I just received a letter with an invoice asking me to please pay for the time spent processing this demolition request: 1 hour, 9 minutes and 29 seconds.

No word on whether I can demo the stupid thing or not.

I'll have to find a vendor selling to AU and I may have wait a while (to save an extra $100, make sure I can find PAL roms, and also hope that our AU$ stops tanking - Its OK against the euro and pound but sucks so much to the US$ that I've put off any BMW parts I want to buy for a while too)
