I think you'll find that with enough determination, you can stick anything up your butt.

I want to get outrider bikes for my characters for 40k, but fielding enough in HH to be effective is cost-prohibitive.

Lets take a moment to admire some hand boiz. Don't confuse them with laz bois or handsome boi, but they are most def an underappreciated and cool legion with a very dead primarch.

The trick to painting them, imo, is not to paint black.

I’m a complete Warhammer newb just getting in to Kill Team and decided to paint up a bunch of mkiii Iron Hands for my tactical dudes, and I just have to express how drat intimidated I am now. Love that oily sheen.

Don't be intimidated dude. It takes time to get good in this hobby, but being inspired by other people's work is a great motivator. Ask around in this thread and people will give you all sorts of advice on how to push your painting. Learn as you go and all that.

If you have an airbrush, then the oil effect is pretty straightforward. The painter who did the FW Iron Hand stuff used to have a blog with a tutorial, but it seems to have gone down. If you're interested though I still have the steps in my head.

Grimey Drawer
The oily sheen is FW's studio scheme for their Iron Hands. It's basically just a bunch of airbrushed tints which doesn't sound too bad if you have an airbrush. (I don't) It also uses a lot of non-GW products, not that that particularly matters.

quote:

1. Undercoat the model with GW black undercoat spray

2. Drybrush layers of Rub and Buff Pewter to blend up from black to silver. with the silver parts being the most raised areas.

3. A small amount of Tamaiya Clear Yellow was added to Tamaiya Smoke and this was airbrushed over the whole model and the model was then left to dry.

4. GW Druchi Violet was then airbrushed over the model in random patches.

5. Tamaiya Clear Green was then airbrushed in patches over the previous two colours.

6. The whole model was airbrushed with a layer of thinned down Tamaiya Smoke and the model was then left to dry.

7. The model was then protected with a coating of GW Purity Seal.

Thanks for the encouragement folks. I’ve actually been painting for a few years now but am making the jump from Warmahordes to Warhammer. I don’t have an airbrush and can’t see investing in one for painting up a kill team-quantity of models* but I’ll do my darndest and as always steal inspiration and techniques from around here.

*(Ron Howard voiceover): one year from now, he’ll have sold his house and be living in a tee fort made of resin models.

I see no reason why the studio scheme wouldn't be doable with just a brush. Take a bit more time, sure.

If you wanted to keep it super basic and cheerful you could just go black, dry brush metal of choice then black wash would get your armour looking dulled iron in no time.

Hi Friends,

I have been reading these dumb 30k books for years and am just starting to get into painting. Is there a place where I can buy some of these models that aren't necessarily tournament approved for cheaper? All of the googling I have been doing just leads me to some fairly shady sites.

Feel free to PM me I guess if needed

Armor:
Army Painter gunmetal spray
Leadbelcher
Nuln Oil in the recesses
Ironbreaker and Stormhost Silver highlights
Varnish
Burnt Umber oil paint
White spirits applied after 10 min of the oil paint, letting the rusty look spread over the armor and into the cracks

Black: Vallejo black grey
Eshin Grey highlights

Hazard stripes: layer of Averland Sunset, highlighted with Yriel Yellow, painter’s tape applied, alternating Vallejo black grey stripes with Eshin Grey highlights

I’m gonna paint up a Moritat with Volkites because it looks fuckin rad, but are they actually any good in a ZM force? It seems like the jump pack would be useless, at least.

I’d have it paired with probably a delegatus kitted out for close combat that’d go with some Templar Brethren or regular breachers or something, haven’t quite figured out that part yet. I’ll go with some regular marines with bolters to round things out.

Plasma is probably better than volkite, just because the best target you’ll likely have in ZM is a terminator squad or a hero in terminator armor. Volkite could still be decent though.

The jump pack is worse than it would be in a regular game, but it’s not totally unusable, just risky. Walk/run most of the time and save the jumps to get in close for the kill and you probably won’t fly your dude into a wall and kill him.

I am taking a unit of Assault Marines with my ZM World Eaters just because getting that charge when I need too is so important, and the hammer of wrath attacks give you some extra punch. One or two might crash and die, but WE ain't sweating it.

Outside White Scars is is definitely an interesting risk/reward question, but if you are doing a plasma Moritat you are already at such extreme risk what is one more roll?
