One thing that kinda sucks is wanting to know the answer to a question you have about the game but people are still making all the guides and poo poo because the game is so new.

People mentioned a missable mini medal in the second half of the game when you go to Dundrasil in a way that can't be revisited and I have scoured the whole area in question and I'm not finding a medal and it's driving me nuts because I'm expecting there to be one.

It's during the plot quest when you investigate a strange dream at the Warrior Rest Inn.

Hint: It's when you visit the past

Solution? Apparently it's in a pot near the kitchen

Yes, I was in that exact place. I just thought I searched every pot and cabinet and whatnot. I just started the boss fight after that sequence as I saw your post, so now I'm reloading to my last save to see if I can't find it.

EDIT: Hmm still can't find it. Though now I'm not sure which room is the kitchen. You have a source for this info? This is driving me nuts. And I checked and I currently have 0 mini medals on me so I didn't find it already and not realize.

Oh I'm an idiot, the mini medal guide I was using (https://www.psu.com/news/dragon-quest-xi-mini-medal-guide-41-60/ , but warning for Part 2 spoilers) was for Heliodor Castle. I was confused by the text of the medal in question, which references something...that I don't think happened in Heliodor Castle? Either way, oops! :shobon:

Haha, thanks for checking. I just fell down a rabbit hole of googling in Japanese w/ my extremely rusty Japanese skills and learning the Japanese names for poo poo so I could search for ユグノア城 過去 メダル and reading a million extremely lovely Japanese wiki sites (there's so many and they're all AWFUL) for this game.

I am thoroughly convinced there is no such medal.

Extremely same.

Out of all the changes between this game and the last ones i think the best change was the fun forge, since + level equipment lets you not have to grind for gold quite as much. It is a significantly easier game overall though, so i think when i finish it i'll start the draconian difficulty stuff. I am also incredibly happy they basically took the DQ4 casino since i wasn't a huge fan of the DQ8 casino offerings. Most of the callbacks on music have been great and recognizing them almost immediately was just another way to point out how much of an impression the old games left on me

But yeah that overworld theme is bad. I hope they give options to replace it, it's just not as good as any of the other games themes and actually feels totally out of step with the rest of the games music choices

I had a chuckle at the gallopolis callback to charmles

Imagine how much more sad and lonely we would be if not for the hard work of lowtax. Here's $12.95 to his aid.
Overworld theme is fine and suitable for the game and its character, the 2D ones cannot be applied (not counting 3DS DQ11 which is where the PS4 version music comes from and that's why we got it) it's just that it all lacks in variety where other games show how much alternative themes add. You gotta mark progression and mood (better than this, and I'm in act 2). Phantasy Star 3 is an old example of doing things uniquely and awesomely, adding instrument tracks as you add members, when you had a full party you knew you were the poo poo. Then you entered anything not a boss battle and got the same ear-killing brain-wrecking 180bpm 4/4 loop, until the target or you got low on health and variety blessed the ears.

Star Ocean 4 did music drat drat right.

Now here's some time spent with the 100 token machines looking for patterns:

I was kind of slow to start the first couple days, sort of getting a feel for what the game was, but the last day or two I've made some serious progress. I did all of Octagonia up through to Lonalulu before I decided to call it a night (at like 5:30 AM). This game rules super ultra hard and I love it a lot.

I love how despite how goofy and simplistic and light hearted the tone of the series they somehow still manage to make really good dramatic scenes like everything going on in the ruins before Rab and Jade join or in 8 King Trodain's general despair at his and Medea's situation or the whole deal with the sad king in his sad kingdom

Now I'm wondering if I should've played FFXIV. I mostly avoid MMOs these days, but DQXI is making me wish I could try DQX. Is FFXIV fun? Is it mechanically different from WoW?

Also, I impulse bought a $159 1TB SSD -- yes, they're that cheap now -- because I was getting annoyed with the load times and did the migration last night. I've been playing today and it feels like there just are no load times. Highly recommend. This is on a PS4 Pro, though. (YMMV on a non-Pro, as only Pro has SATA III.)

Small details, but french localization has some german mixed in (the level up for the forge notably). Makes me smile anyway, I can't get angry about vanything in this game.
Small detail also, what I took for a very brief nod to Bayonetta in a cutscene was a nice surprise.

It's my favourite MMO, and yeah it's quite different from WoW mechanically. Also it plays well on a controller (though if you get it on ps4 you'll still want a keyboard for chat, bluetooth keyboard as cheap as chips now though). There's a free trial to level 35 though the game really picks up at 50 which is quick to reach these days, the goon guilds are on Excalibur for America, and they are very big, active and friendly (apparently it's got the largest goon community after EVE?). There's a big Euro guild on Omega and a small group of SEA-Ausgoons on Tonberry though a lot of us just play with the Americans or Euros.

It's by far the best written MMO ever, the first expansion Heavensward might be the best written FF content. Also completely opposite to DQ11 the music is absolutely amazing and the largest soundtrack in gaming.

The 1.0 sound track had 5 hours, the 2.0 sound track had nearly 7, the 3.0 soundtrack added another 5 and this doesn't include 4.0 or the vast amount of 2.x, 3.x and 4.x music.

It got the record for the most original composition in a game before the most recent expansion in Feb 2017. And that doesn't include all the classic FF arrangements in it.

It's also worth noting that the world record wasn't actually for the game, but for Masayoshi Soken personally, as he's composed almost the entire 2.x-4.x soundtrack himself. (The main exception being the main themes, which are Nobuo Uematsu's work.)

Anyway, found XI's slime island, so that's nice if I ever need to grind.

It's absurdly varied too, classical, folk, pop, rock, baroque, big band, jazz, classical Japanese, classical Chinese, choral hymns (it's FF so of course there's loads of this mixed into a lot of things), like half a dozen kinds of metal, Mongolian folk music, sea shanties, string pieces. poo poo's nuts.

And it';s weird I've only just found a liquid metal slime like after flying. Had terrible luck with them.

8 is the most like this one and incredibly good, 4-6 are all really good for their time, 5 in particular is held in high regard. Have good iOS ports too, 4 in particular you want the iOS not the DS one due to weird cuts in the DS one.

9 is a weird beast that's based heavily on a multiplayer scene that never materialised outside Japan. 1-3 were NES era RPGs and the iOS ports have weird issues. 7 is incredibly long and I couldn't get through it.

If you have a Switch Dragon Quest Builders is a fun as hell take on Minecraft with more direction and questing.

They are all worth playing, except for maybe 2 at this point. Most of them will have a very similar feel. Here's the best version of each:
1 - SNES or 3DS(jp only)/Mobile
2 - SNES or 3DS(jp only)/Mobile
3 - SNES or GBC, avoid mobile/3DS
4 - PSX(jp only) or DS
5 - PS2(jp only, translation patch available), with DS in a close second
6 - Either version is good
7 - Personal preference, probably stick to 3DS
8 - 3DS
9 - Only available on DS, you'll need a PAR or cheat device to access a lot of the additional quests since Nintendo shut down the online service for regular DS games
10 - Japanese language and Asian region only; you'd need a VPN to even access it
