if 99% of every hurricane has taught me anything its that by the time the storm actually hits the coast it'll probably weaken to a cat 2 and everyone will be like 'shouldnt have evacuated lol'

Cancer issues were more likely from the coal plant that blew up as a result but of course it's the nuclear plant that scares people

They won't, tho. All those people evacuated to their second/third homes and have insurance that will pick up the pieces after their property gets destroyed.

lol, its one thing to not evacuate, since people in strong homes on higher ground or whatnot don't have to add to the chaos of evacuation, but actually going TO the coast is a special kind of stupid

the 2011 japan tsunami should have been a non-event by the time it reached america

however there was one (1) fatality, in oregon or washington i think, from some dude who heard "tsunami warning" and thought "whoa i'm gonna go to the beach"

Harvey was only 80 some dead though. If it does not landfall at cat 4-5 then the danger is flooding, and in general not that many die from floods they know are coming since you need to be trapped in some way to avoid rescue completely. Like in that warning list earlier, it's people in cars, the elderly, and children most at risk since grown adults can often clamber into a roof or something and avoid actually dying.

So hopefully he is right.

Harvey was different because it sat on Houston for a week straight, conveyor belting the gulf into the city until it pushed the crust an inch into the mantle - this seems like it would be more of a Rita-type situation. Or not, whatever.
