I've been in for 12 now, and in my country there's nothing like that pension scheme. I retire at 62, or I quit and go do something else. (I'm quitting and doing something else come summer) Unfortunately they've also discontinued our equivalent to the GI bill, but the Danish socialist welfare state provides free education and about USD $1000 a month when you study, so it's not all bad.

It’s why part of my plan, should I make it to 20, is DINK life forever and ever until we either stop working or work part-time. We’re generally frugal, have no debt anymore, a paid off rental home, and have both been full-time employed since we graduated college, straight from high school. Not terrible, considering my food stamps and free school lunch childhood. My dream of not working before I’m too crippled to work lives on, for now. But everyone is one or two disasters or bad decisions from losing that hope. Yes, I realize this means I’m up against the wall or in line for guillotines if it comes to it. mlmp08 fucked around with this message at 18:56 on Sep 11, 2018 |

That PT test will absolutely weed out a bunch of people and cause serious injuries. I don't see it making it past the Defense Health Board unless it's got serious changes. Probably toss this one on the pile for failed attempts.

American Military Pension is pretty wild compared to Euros who will Army until 62 in most cases and the pension comes nowhere even near what, let’s say, Major at 20 years gets at retirement. Especially lol at some E-7 getting anything else besides public ridicule for being a lifer NCO. The militaries overall provide very few benefits or perks, because it is the job of the state.

I'll stick my guard time out to 20 for whatever retirement that'll come to, and consider running up the score if I'm doing something I like. If nothing else it's cheap healthcare for the next 9+ years.

The retirement plan for guard/reserves is pretty minute in comparison to the active component isn't it? Like an average guardsman who gets out as say... an E-7 with 2 deployments and does 20 years ends up only getting like $500 a month? The healthcare benefit is super nice, i won't argue that.

In the US, a defined benefit pension plan means you're guaranteed to get paid a certain amount of money each month basically until death. The few companies that still offer them typically don't require any contribution on the part of the beneficiaries aside from time worked.

RRSPs are the tax deferred account I believe, but as part of the contract for the work i do, the company pays $8/h to the union pension plan and the union will pay me an amount per month when I retire based on what I have contributed. I'm aiming at $7000ish (before taxes) a month ATM if I keep my hours up and I retire at 60 in good standing with the union (all dues paid etc). I also have an RRSP that I can't even contribute to because so much goes into the union one.

I work as a security officer for an agency aligned with the UN and am currently at a training course in Africa with a dude who spent nearly 40 years in the French Army (not FFL) who is making $96,000 a year at another agency (in a place where $9600 a year would be way more than what the richest local would see) and having his kids school paid for plus a generous pension. Overseas work sounds tempting at times, but only if I get to bring Lando with my girlfriend. Hard loving pass if I don’t.

All sources make themselves the hero of their story, to some extent, but Woodward's secret to success and access so far has been basically uncritically repeating back whatever information people are telling him without particularly asking himself why they are telling him that information. Maybe this book is different, but I doubt it. And of course, Cambridge Analystica was Bannon's baby and mostly seemed to be a standard consulting firm that suckered in Bannon and the Mercer's with slapping a layer of silicon valley technobabble and ad copy on standard consulting techniques, and all the candidates he's backed in special elections have pretty much lost. So despite Bannon's evil Mastermind schtick his opinion of himself is a lot more inflated than is anywhere near deserved.

You’d be one of the few in your profession with health insurance, and steady income. That’d be a real leg up for becoming a successful actor. Best of luck with it. Also if you REALLY wanna get some big bucks and acting isn’t working, get into the technical side of lighting and the electrical setup side of the show. That’s union trade work, and drat good paying when you can get into it. It’s something my brother in law failed at, just not a good technical guy, decent actor however. I know basically nothing about college or what major/minor means, because I couldn't be assed to college before I figured out something I actually wanted to do with it. So I've still got 8.5 years part time college before I retire to make up for that.
