Godholio posted:There's got to be more to it than "we'll lock you up longer if you don't cooperate." Manafort stands a solid chance of dying in prison just on his initial convictions. Adding 50 years onto his sentence isn't much of a threat to a guy pushing 70. My educated guess is that Muller's team showed Manafort that they not only had the receipts to lock him up, but confiscate a gently caress ton of his property and any property that he had purchased for his daughters. I think that would make most people start to reconsider taking one for the team.

So I’m just north of ole Fayettenam. It’s bellow the level that Matthew was two years ago in term of winds and rain so far, but we have at least another two days of this. We lost power for about 5 hours yesterday but already regained it. I luckily live on top of a hill in a city with fairly good sewers so wind is my only concern when it comes to damage to the house. That and my children killing me because the power went out while they are awake. With Matthew we lost power for about a week and had a boil advisory for around 10 days. A few of the Soldiers in my Battalion lost their homes due to flooding and we had to help them get set up until insurance could take hold. The south side of Bragg, Lumberton especially, is super low lying and prone to flood. Lumberton is extremely impoverished to begin with so Im hoping this won’t be quite as bad because it lingered so long at the coast, but it’s so large that we are still getting a ton of rain.

So the lack of news is good news? The storm is weaker than it could be, yet carries a lot of water with it. So that means it can (and will) cause a lot of damage, but mostly over a longer time span so that there won't be a lot of casualties?

Manafort refuses to testify, gets charged for CoC, pleads guilty, gets a pardon, rinse, dry, repeat. It's risibly abusive of process but: . That stops working in 2021 but if you think they're thinking much beyond "loot and run". And they might not even lose in 2020. And it's not like there will ever be any real trials after 2020 anyways, America doesn't really "do" political trials (until you're more than two standard deviations to the left, at least). If no one ended up in the dock after Iraq (and no one political after the banks) there's no way something this obviously political (and really fairly wonky) does either. Contempt of court is not a final judgement to be pardoned, but is an enforcement tool for the courts to employ as they see fit, iirc.

Individual senator decorum and school pedigree doesn’t outweigh the stupidity of giving Alaska or Wyoming the exact same Senatorial power as Texas or California. I get why the senate is a thing.
